Regarding express bus services. West Riding/Yorkshire Woollen used to operate the Fastaway network. How many of those routes survive now? Not even the X5 (210 originally) between Wakefield and Leeds, though there is the X41 via a slightly longer route.

LCT never went beyond the old city boundary at Thwaite Gate. The number 7 terminated/started at the garage there and displayed 'Hunslet' as the destination. West Riding operated most of the services that continued beyond there to Wakefield, Rothwell, Woodlesford etc. originally operating trams to Wakefield and Rothwell later replaced by buses (the red ones). Rothwell originally had two red routes to Leeds(11 and 12 or 13 and 14 I can't remember)plus the 92 (green). In later years these were combined into the 91, 92, 93 and 94 depending on the route in Rothwell. These eventually became todays 444. In PTE days the 7 was extended to Rothwell but at a later date it disappeared. The 8/9 is a recent addition in PTE days. Kippax used to be served by Wallace Arnolds Kippax and District subsidiary as well as West Riding. I'm not sure if these routes continued when WA sold out to LCT. There were no LCT services beyond the Leeds boundary originally and the 18 was extended to Garforth in PTE days I think.

Busy day for Arriva's Presidents. Two in Wakefield Bus Station at 1230 today followed by 677 seen at Babes in the Wood pub 20 minutes later. Not sure what route it was working.

That may be true steveinselby but I believe they can decide what to spend their money on. The parts of North Yorkshire I visit regularly (Ingleton/Settle/Skipton/Hawes)have some of the best maintained minor roads I have ever seen, much better than potholed ridden 'A' roads where I live in West Yorkshire.

As voters in North Yorkshire have voted for the Conservative councillors who have chosen to cut subsidised bus services they are presumably happy to live with the consequences. I think most ratepayers in West Yorkshire would have a lot to say if their money was being used in another county for whatever reason.

To the best of my knowledge Lancashire County Council have withdrawn all subsidies to bus services. I. e. there are no longer any tendered services.

Wonder what their justification for a rise is? Fares are already so expensive that it is cheaper to take a taxi if there is more than one of you!

Going back some time Between Leeds and Wakefield West Riding's 92 became 91,92,93 and 94 when the old tram routes from Leeds to Rothwell were abolished, were they 18 and 19? These became 491, 492, 492 and 494 in PTE days. These later morphed into 440, 441, 442, 443, 444, 445, 446, 447 and 448 when they were combined with the 465 Barnsley - Leeds service (joint West Riding/Yorkshire Traction). This service had previously been the 65 (Sheffield to Leeds)and before that services 90 (West Riding) and 99 (Yorkshire Traction following their takeover of T. Burrows & Sons). So I think we can conclude that numbers come and go quite often. Incidentally there was a thread on this in 2013.

I get your point BT but in corporation days when services terminated at the city boundary (and stopping/co-ordination agreements existed) there were probably more services overall but each company used there own service numbers. This continued in PTE days. A number of services have disappeared since including 7 in Leeds which used to terminate in Hunslet (now left to Arriva beyond Church Street) and, was it the 17? in Bradford to Tong Cemetery (again now left to Arriva). Also some services have been combined. The ex West Yorkshire services in Leeds spring to mind. LCT/PTE services 25 used to terminate in Kirkstall and the 33 in Horsforth.

Just noticed that there is no actual 173 now so how can you have a 173A?

The worst thing that can happen is that you end up with a confusing set of service numbers as in Arriva's 173, 173A, 174, 174A, 175 and 175A. The 173,174 and 175 were given suffix A for a route change when another service was withdrawn and then subsequently further changes have resulted in some services with the A suffix not running over the A suffix route! Even the drivers can't follow it and we see 173/4/5 running over the A suffix route so god knows how passengers are supposed to manage. See the timetable to see how confusing it is.
Routes that have variations but use the same number for all journeys are infuriating and the 268/268A rubbish is just barmy.

Strange that my diesel car doesn't chuck muck out at every stop. I was told years ago that clouds of black smoke meant that the car was badly maintained. Make of that what you will.

Those Arriva timetables are fantastic. If any members of the public actually use their website they'll never catch the right bus! Sundays 148 timetable is a real treat with buses running on different routes with the same number. 410 is equally easy to understand.....not.

Just for interest. I think the same company owns Trinity Leeds and White Rose but Trinity Walk is owned by a completely different mob, Orion European Real Estate Fund according to Wakefield Express.

What I don't understand is why certain operators appear to be running empty journeys at the start /finish of the day. Surely if you are running empty all the way from Otley to Leeds (for example) it's better to run in service isn't it?

They do already have some Tempos of course. Maybe a few more added to the mix wont be too bad and would raise the age profile a tad.

Two Yorkshire Tiger ALX200 darts observed on Aberford Road Stanley this afternoon following the usual Arriva 444 service to Leeds. Made an interesting convoy until they overtook it. En route from Belle Isle to Leeds?
