We don't go to York now on the 42's so run only requires one pointer dart now and we have three (260, 261 & 262). Are Darts not used on the 7, 42 and 492/493? I can't see why any of those routes would need anything bigger or better...

I wonder how he got to the airport because First Buses don't go to there any more ? ? ? Plenty of wheelchair users can drive. There are regular buses to the airport from a range of destinations. Many taxi firms have wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Most wheelchair users have friends who can give them a lift. I'm not sure what your point is...

As for steveinselby's response, I would assume he is not a vocational driver who works sundays on a regular basis. You're right, I'm not ... but I can't see any reason why I would need to be in order to justify making the comments I have made. What has that got to do with the price of fish? The clear implication of your posts was that the age of the driver was a major contributing factor, if not the determining factor, in the cause of the accident ... and that you did not think a driver of that age should be allowed to be in charge of a bus. That may not have been what you intended, but that was what came across loud and clear. Phrases like "Still, i suppose innocent people's lives being lost isn't as important as geriatric's right's to employment is it?" suggest that you have already made up your mind that the driver's age was to blame. To my mind, there's a huge difference between an as-yet-unexplained loss of control, which could have been caused by any number of things, many of which are independent of the driver, and driving the wrong way onto a motorway, which is almost universally the result of a significant, catastrophic and unacceptable driver error. Yes, the bus crash might very well have been largely age-related, but there are lots of other possibilities (eg mechanical failure, sudden glare or reflection of sunlight) ... but driving the wrong way on a motorway is an absolute certain marker of a driver who should not be on the road. And yes, I do fully support regular retesting of all drivers throughout their lives, and at an increased frequency over the age of 70. No-one's personal liberty to drive a car is more important than the safety of other road users.

Yes, you're quite right with your last sentence, It isn't mine or your business to say whether people should work or not, once they've reached a certain age. However, have you lost sight of the original topic?. 77yo bus driver kills passengers!. Still, i suppose innocent people's lives being lost isn't as important as geriatric's right's to employment is it?. So if the headline was "27 year old bus driver kills passengers", would you be saying that no-one under 35 should be allowed to be a bus driver? No, because the headline would never say that, because there would never be an implicit assumption that under 35s are too dangerous. Until and unless there is any evidence that the driver's age was a factor in the accident then you are doing nothing more than showing your own prejudice in this thread.

People do not usually "live comfortably" off their state pension. They either supplement it with savings or a private pension, or they eke out a frugal existence. Depending on their circumstances, people might need a lot more than the state pension to live comfortably, particularly if they fear they might have higher living or care costs coming for themselves or their partners. If you want to be able to afford a private nursing home in your dotage, that isn't cheap.
What next? Should anyone earning more than a certain amount be expected to go part-time to free up jobs for the unemployed? Do I need to drop to 4 days a week?
Many older people who can live comfortably off their pensions a/o savings do voluntary work - but for those who want to continue earning and are fit to do so, it is not your business or mine to say that they should not.

You've got to admire their chutzpah if nothing else, for touting a reduction in frequency as an "improvement". The 1 has run every 10 minutes during the daytime, right back to Metroisation in 2001, and the 6 has run at least every 12 minutes and usually every 10 minutes for almost as long - they are reducing the service level to the lowest it has been in 12 years ar more but claiming it as better for passengers. Beam me up, Scotty...

NYCC have published their response to the consultation: democracy.northyorks.gov.uk/FunctionsPage.aspx?dsid=76155&action=GetFileFromDBThe 31X got a huge number of responses and it looks as though they might relent a bit on the original proposals; they are putting out a tender but they haven't said what the minimum level they would provide using their in-house fleet would be. There are some crumbs of comfort in Wharfedale but it looks as though significant cuts will still go ahead, with only Grassington—Skipton retaining a usable service. Services around the Esk Valley will be retained as they are now. Winter buses from Malton to Whitby will be tendered at a lower cost. So ... Coastliner B10BLEs? Rural buses around Knaresborough are going to be retained for a year and then reviewed again, following discussions with the operator to run them at a lower cost. Of course, Transdev have now thrown a spanner in the works with the extension to the 1A, but no replacement service to Goldsborough, Flaxby, Arkendale, Minskip or Roecliffe, so there may be further changes to come on that one. York to Ripon is to be retained as previously advertised. 180/181 will not have to make such significant savings and will be retendered – hopefully this will allow services to/from York city centre to be retained throughout the day and full-size buses used.

Transdev have released the details for the extended 1A www.harrogatebus.co.uk/news.jsp?newsID=1547Shown as running direct from K'boro Bus Station to St James retail park (not serving the Aspins) then via the A658, A59, A1(M) to B'bridge Morrisons then via Aldborough and B'Bridge town centre to Kirby Hill. I did wonder whether the non-stop section was to enable the service to by-pass ENCTS, but it's no more than 10 miles so that isn't it. Still seems a bit odd that it's non-stop along the A59 section, when it could reasonably call at Goldthorpe lane end and Flaxby lane end. This route is only a minute or two quicker between Boroughbridge and Knaresborough, so it's hard to see why they are running it non-stop on a longer route, instead of serving a number of villages that are only served by the 57. Is there any news on whether NYCC are planning to change the 57 as a result of the 1A extension, or will it just run through to the April 2016 change?

First are offering a year of travel for just £99, half the price of Transdev. How they are making any money at what works out at about 33p per trip, I don't know. They aren't – it's a loss leader solely aimed at driving Transdev off the route and then they'll rack the prices back up again. It's like when they ran the X64 between York and Leeds – both First and Coastliner were offering unsustainably low fares in the hope that the other one would back off.

I don't know exactly what the university contract specifies, but I suspect that interworking it with the 4 would be operationally difficult.
The 4 seems quite happy with 6bph to Foxwood, which fits with neither the 4bph of the holiday timetable or the 9bph of the term-time timetable. First have tried in the past having some buses running part-route depending on whether it was term-time or holidays in the past and it was a nightmare. They really need a 52-week timetable to Foxwood rather than one that changes during uni holidays, so I don't think interworking is a goer on the current contract arrangements.

First York have posted some changes for 22 November: - 4 will now just run between Acomb and York
- 6 will again run between Clifton Moor and Heslington East
- 10 will have an increased frequency – presumably back up to every 30 minutes
- New X10 service running between Dunnington, York and Askham Bar – no indication of frequency or coverage
- 11 will have additional am and Friday pm journeys

Arriva have got a Solo SR on the 415 tonight, and it's just highlighting the problems with the way these buses are kitted out. The 2005 from York on a Thursday is quite possibly the busiest journey of the WEEK, there are almost no seats left and we haven't even got to the Outlet, where on late-night shopping day there are usually at least a dozen people waiting. And with no legroom for anyone over 5'6" and no luggage space at all, when these buses are full you really know about it. And this week it's Mk1 Pulsar 1411. Definitely an improvement on a Solo SR, it doesn't feel like the Piccadilly Line in the rush hour tonight, but I'm still not sure why they can't manage 2 Geminis in service out of a fleet of 8...

It's not clear from that how much, if any, of the Staynor Park estate is going to be served or what route it will take. Using pre-made Google services is all very well, but you can't beat a proper professionally designed map, especially when it comes to new developments.

Why does it say 42 Selby - York via Cawood............ Probably because that's what the route does at the moment, and their system isn't smart enough to have different route descriptions for current and future variations of the same timetable.

I've heard a rumour that the 6 is returning to its old route in November, no word on the 4. Apparently the 6 has had buses missing or late in peak hours most days since the changes, the mind boggles as to why since halving the route should make delays easier to manage? Yes, all other things being equal, it should be easier to run a shorter route reliably - but if they have failed to allow enough recovery time and enough additional running time during busy periods - if they're trying to do it on the cheap without enough buses, in other words - then it's very easy for a service to become less reliable.

Transdev are alsovery publicly making complaints about being victimised and sidelined in preference to First - totally unjustified IMO, given that they enjoyed exactly the same privileges at First's expense for the 5 years that they had the contract.

NYCC have now published a combined timetable showing both Arriva and Utopia services: www.northyorkstravel.info/timetable/42full.pdfApart from mistakes on the weekday evening 42 journeys that run through to Cawood, that apparently start from Charles Street and run via Scalm Park (and no mention of whether they are through journeys from York, likewise the morning buses from Cawood to Selby). Also no mention of the 42-1 on Sundays, which seems like an odd omission.

As a seasoned car driver, i have no sympathy whatsoever for these people bleating about being done for using a bus lane. It's just sheer impatience, and they deserve every fine they get. A Bus lane is just that, whether its empty or not. It beggars belief the number of brain dead tossers in their little solely occupied jam-jars, who think their right of passage is far more important than a decker containing 75 passengers. If it were up to me, i'd make them retake their driving test. For people who are illegally using the bus lane to jump the queue, I completely agree. However, I think a lot of cases where people are caught are where they are turning left – either a left turn in the middle of the bus lane, or after the bus lane ends and becomes a left-turn lane. In those situations (particularly the first one, the second is more questionable), drivers may not be holding up buses at all or inconveniencing any other road user by using the bus lane before turning left, so I would have a lot more sympathy with the driver in that case.

An examination of the timetable shows only 3 am and 3 pm rush hour Mon-Fri Fife circle trains running to and from Tweedbank. Could this pattern be in place because of lack of platform space at Edinburgh Waverley station during rush hours Could also be to provide direct services for commuters to Haymarket and South Gyle.

Some stand changes in York at the end of the month:
Buses to the university (27, 44 and 66) will now run from Merchantgate, not Piccadilly.
Buses to Fulford (26) and along the Hull Road corridor (X4, 10, 45, 46, X46)* will now run from Piccadilly, not Merchantgate.
Perhaps someone has realised what was going to happen to Piccadilly with double the number of university buses stopping there and waiting for time. (I'm amazed how often buses heading towards the station wait for time at Piccadilly. There really isn't the capacity there for it, so First and Transdev should look at altering the timing points, or moving the slack to the end of the route, to avoid this.)
* technically the 45 and 46 run via the university and not to, so don't try to be pedantic...
