Bus lane fines cause most complaints says AA Fines for misusing bus lanes are overtaking parking tickets as the main cause of complaints from drivers, according to the AA. The motoring group said thousands of drivers were being "entrapped" by worn road markings and poor signage. A junction in Lambeth, south London generated the highest number of fines, totalling over £6m, the AA claimed. The Local Government Association said strict guidelines were already in place and drivers could appeal against fines. The number one complaint was drivers wanting to turn left who inadvertently merge into the bus lane early for safety reasons and are then caught on camera in the bus lane before they are allowed to be, the AA said. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34244796

As a seasoned car driver, i have no sympathy whatsoever for these people bleating about being done for using a bus lane. It's just sheer impatience, and they deserve every fine they get. A Bus lane is just that, whether its empty or not. It beggars belief the number of brain dead tossers in their little solely occupied jam-jars, who think their right of passage is far more important than a decker containing 75 passengers. If it were up to me, i'd make them retake their driving test.

However, I think a lot of cases where people are caught are where they are turning left – either a left turn in the middle of the bus lane, or after the bus lane ends and becomes a left-turn lane. In those situations (particularly the first one, the second is more questionable), drivers may not be holding up buses at all or inconveniencing any other road user by using the bus lane before turning left, so I would have a lot more sympathy with the driver in that case.

There is a bus Lane on Dewsbury Road, Beeston frequently used as a parking area for Beeston Line taxi's, however never seen any action taken by the council to stop this, probably because traffic wardens only seem to patrol the city centre! It's a joke that a council one stop office is opposite Beeston Line.

Similar with Manningham Lane in Bradford.
The number of people you see parked in the bus lane between Drewton Road and Queens Road or using it to speed past other traffic and cutting in further along (whether there's a queue or not) is ridiculous and nothing ever seems to get done about it.

Whether or not, you have sympathy with the first instance doesn't matter. Car drivers who do this are breaking the law. No excuse spouting unfamiliarity either. If todays motorists exercised a little vigilance and perhaps read up on the highway code now and again they wouldn't get themselves into situations where they're having to pay fines. Before you question my audacity to comment on this subject, I'll just let you know i've been a class 1 HGV driver for 26 years, and currently combine that role with that of a company driving auditor/ HGV assessor, so virtually every day i have to witness the continuing decay of driving standards and the mis-use of bus lanes is just another example of today's "couldn't give a toss " attitude to driving standards in general.
