According to First Leeds management the offer was 3%. I can think of a number of people in this country that would absolutely welcome a wage increase of 3%. Emergency services staff and nurses to name a few People should be thankful they got a job

People should be thankful they got a job And accept anything management tell them whilst we have a race to the bottom on people's terms and conditions? I don't know enough details to know if this strike is justified or not, but I don't see why you'd dismiss it out of hand unless you have no empathy for anyone who works for a transport company.

I think the thing which really irritates me is the fact this wage rise (once it goes through) will somehow be added to fares, the shareholders should take a hit, after all they have more money than your average working man who has to pay out, pay out and pay out some more! The other thing what I'd like to point out is why do Leeds drivers think they deserve a big rise just because Leeds happens to be a heavily populated, very profitable place with few bus companies meaning First take most of the passengers? It's not as if drivers have worked hard to fend off many competitors.

Something was wrote on here about drivers saying they deserved a big pay rise because Leeds depots made the biggest profits out of all the local depots.

Meanwhile the bus workers are being offered a rise of just 16 pence an hour for this year and 20 pence for next year. IF Halifax is indeed on £2 an hour more, but, has possibly some of the oldest vehicles. Why does First West Yorkshire have different pay structure for their depots? When I was employed at Arriva, and now at TLC, all depots were/are the same rate.

Reality is all First Bus Drivers in West Yorkshire should be paid an equal or standard Wage and anything else extra should be set up as either some form of wage increment. Regardless of Depot , type or age of Buses and who makes more profit than the other. In the end the companies Legals Spell First West Yorkshire, not First Hunslet Park or First Bramley.

I'm surprised there is such a big gap in pay rates between FWY depots.
I know it can be difficult to align conditions when companies merge, like the issues they have in the rail industry, but FWY has been a single company for 42 years.
This explains why First Halifax have never been on strike in my memory but all the others have.

Reading the union statement, its interesting that Halifax drivers are paid more than Leeds, surely all First drivers in the region should be paid the same? You'd also think rather than make 45 hosts redundant efforts would be made to train them in to drivers - Bradford cancels a lot of journeys due to insufficient staff

The trouble with striking for money is that you rarely get back what you lose for the day you go on strike to begin with and the longer the dispute goes on, the further behind you fall. If the drivers think they can get more than 3% by striking then good luck to them but nobody else is getting that these days- I know a local authority worker who has to support his partner as well, who walks to work and considers himself lucky to get an inflationary pay rise.
As regards the pay differential between Leeds and Halifax, it does seem strange because you would expect the Leeds job market to be more competitive and therefore more highly paid. Add the city's place on the motorway network and you would expect there to be driving jobs going all the time and an incentive for First to try to retain staff. Do First have to incentivise drivers from other parts of the operation to relocate to Halifax, I wonder? As a town it lacks the amenities and attractions of Leeds, Bradford or Huddersfield.
On the other hand, if Halifax is a smaller depot with a lot of long serving staff (in part due to fewer opportunities for alternative employment) and the Leeds depots have a higher turnover then the average pay packet at Halifax may be higher simply because the average driver has been there longer and has more years under their belt than the average Leeds driver.
Personally I'm looking at doing my normal Otley-Leeds commute via the 762 to Pannal and picking the 36 up there- as far as I can see, on a £9 Daytripper it comes out cheaper than two singles on the 967 to Menston and the train.

I think you are doing a slight disservice to Halifax there, especially by comparing it negatively against Bradford of all places.
The latter point you make could possibly explain it, Halifax does seem to have a high number of old timers and possibly therefore they are on the same rate as Leeds just that Halifax has a higher number of top tier drivers on the highest rates. Halifax driving will be an easier job than Leeds, lots of nice long distance work and in the past rural work, rather than endless slow moving city work stopping at every bus stop that is almost the entirety of First Leeds operations.

If you do that on the return make certain you get an earlier 36 or two than the one that should make a good connection as the timetable is bound to go to wall if you are depending on it. At present there are road works at both at Pannal and between Harrogate and Ripon which are causing delays to mount up and that's assuming no accident happens on the A61 that day just to really stuff thing up.

When I was employed at Arriva, and now at TLC, all depots were/are the same rate. You may find that the £2 difference is the difference between the 'Starter' rate at Leeds and the 'Established' rate at Halifax. Most likely the story has been given a dose of 'spin' to make it look better, and gain sympathy.
