Yorkshire Buses have just posted on their Facebook page the following route changes for the no9 from July 7th service changes Service extended to Horsforth Rail Station via Horsforth Vale, Leeds & Bradford Road & Carveley Lane. ‼️ Service 9 CHANGES From 03/07/2023 ‼️ Having recently taking on the Line 9 service, our management team have constantly been gathering information as to how this service could potentially be improved also improving the overall feasibility. This being said, Yorkshire Buses have worked closely with Councillor Tom Hinchcliffe of the Bramley and Stanningley Labour constituency to get these changes approved. Timetable adjustments have had to be made in order to accommodate these changes however, to make this process easier, we have funded a leaflet (timetable) drop for at least 25,000 homes along the route and because some of you definitely need an excuse to 'get out more'... We have also included a 1x FREE journey voucher attached to the timetable so you can trial the new changes free of charge.

I wonder if this finally means a certain unreliable operator has been stripped of a certain contract

The start of July sees the demise of YorBus. North Yorkshire's demand responsive service around Ripon, Bedale and Masham finishes on 30 June, on the basis that the grant funding has run out and it's ridiculously expensive compared with normal bus routes so NYC are not going to pay for it themselves. Well well well, who would have guessed 🤔 www.northyorks.gov.uk/news/2023/yorbus-pilot-will-shape-future-transport-provision

Nearly every single one that has been launched has ended this way, apart from a small number but in areas where it's the only choice. A scheduled hourly service through these areas would be far more successful.

Problem is whilst Scheduled services might stand more of a chance (although if you look at how long some survived after the RBI grants ran out during the 00s - maybe not), it's DRT that central government are throwing money at compared to regular services so it's easy to see why some areas are using DRT that comes with free funding to save on the tendered network bill for a few months. Unless I'm forgetting any, no scheduled routes got withdrawn for 'YorBus' so at least nobody loses out with it now going. Also if you think rural Calderdale was a bad suggestion be thankful you don't live in Bristol with their new DRT covering most of the outer areas including replacing some routes that used to be operated by Double Deckers

Plus it will be pretty stupid to ruin Calderdales fixed timetables as they have such a strong rural network compared to other areas.

Some areas of rural Calderdale got Ring and Ride - Norland and Dean Head to Sowerby (this replaced Sowerby to Tuel Lane to Norland 3 times a day, 3 days a week and Dean Head's 2-hourly all day, every day link to Halifax.). This appears to have quietly disappeared.

Swear down that service must have been axed as I've never seen it around despite living round Sowerby Bridge for nearly 10 years.

Looking at the Metro map and timetable section on Timetable world it was set up in 2011 with DK Travel running it but it only ran Monday to Friday 10:00-14:00. Community Transport Calderdale ran a similar service for Cross Lee the CT1.

Plus it will be pretty stupid to ruin Calderdales fixed timetables as they have such a strong rural network compared to other areas. It isn't stupid if there's simply no money - we are lucky at the moment Metro seems to be doing ok regarding funding but if/when further cuts do end up needing to be made (the way things are going i could see it happening within next couple of years) then like it or not but DRT might be the only solution for some areas as that's what's being offered by central government. The fact Calderdale has a fairly ok network compared to others makes it an easy target to 'trim the fat' if/when needed. That was my point when I originally suggested Calderdale for a DRT previously. It is also possible for DRT to run to a 'flexible' fixed timetable like the Interconnect routes in Lincolnshire, I Would probably go for something more like that but as none of the grant funded networks that have popped recently follow that model I wouldn't be surprised if the grants don't allow it.

Fixed timetables can easily be cancelled, DRT on the other hand offers more flexibility so if a journey is missing, then hopefully it can be covered by another bus close by, with a longer journey time for all involved but that's better than a cancellation. DRT can cover a longer operating period compared to most rural fixed timetables which, in rural Calderdale offer very few evening journeys. There is the stupid situation in East Leeds however where I often see 2 DRT buses picking 2 different people up within half a mile (they have different numbers on the front so it's easy to spot it's not the same bus) but that's down to schedulers, having one bus pick up only 1 person makes things expensive to run, having that one bus pick up 2 people makes it that bit more efficient, even if it involves a longer journey time for one of those passengers it won't be that long.

And that rather reveals the two main problems with these schemes. First the more people who travel the less attractive it is as you may wait longer for pick up and take a longer route. Demand Responsive Transport is less responsive the more demand increases ironically. The second is cost are largely fixed. In your example it would only be cheaper to pick both up with one bus if the second bus wasn’t in use. If you have two drivers, two buses and two customers it costs virtually the same to pick both up separately, other than fuel. The fundamental weakness is this is a taxi style service but with bus costs. Taxis work as a model as drivers are simply paid for the work they do picking up customers and downtime is unpaid. DRT drivers are paid per hour regardless of work. It’s not clear why shared taxi or taxi bus provisions can’t be used to cater for the DRT market - as limited as it is!

DRT drivers are paid per hour regardless of work. It’s not clear why shared taxi or taxi bus provisions can’t be used to cater for the DRT market - as limited as it is! In places like London and Milton Keynes where ViaVan operate themselves, they use MPVs presumably because they recognise this issue with economy of scale. DRT as an algorithm should match rides to the capacity of available vehicles so there's no obligation to use a minibus. I think the implementation could have been better but requires a decent core bus network which is where the Masham area falls down. Say the only fixed bus routes in the area were 144 and 159 in some guise running hourly. Then the DRT app has Ripon, Masham, Bedale centres plus any villages served hourly shaded out, with the rule you can travel from/to but not between shaded areas to not abstract revenue from fixed routes. Then maybe contract out the DRT to local taxi firms with some provision in the contract to say the funding model can be changed during the trial to see what works best, i.e hours or days of operation, and cost either fixed or mileage based.

Also if you think rural Calderdale was a bad suggestion be thankful you don't live in Bristol with their new DRT covering most of the outer areas including replacing some routes that used to be operated by Double Deckers That's right, Yorbus completely covered a number of tendered and in-house routes – all the Ripon City services that NYC run using their own minibuses, and the descendants of the Ripon Roweller network and the 144 that Dales & District run either peak-time only or 3 days a week only – and these scheduled routes all continued unchanged (except for the recent S106-funded improvements to the Ripon City services). This was actually quite a smart move from NYC, as while it may have cost more to be running the services in parallel it will have helped them see how people travelled when they had the choice between an infrequent scheduled service or an on-demand service.

I wonder if this means peak morning and afternoon times, or through the daytime? For example 7am-9am and 3pm-5pm or something more like 7am-4pm?

Great news! I’m surprised the WY towns/cities bordering SY don’t have any links to the region.
