Unique journey opportunities from Cottingley both last weekend and this weekend. Direct trains all day Saturday and I think Sunday too from Cottingley to Yarm, Thornaby, Middlesborough, Redcar and Saltburn, as far as I know this must be the first time Cottingley has been connected with those stations, it's probably never been connected with Northallerton as well!

TPE were also unusually stopping at Brighouse, as the trains were rerouted that way to avoid Huddersfield. This is why I used Brighouse station yesterday instead of Halifax (plus caution due to the Northern overtime ban).

My sister was excited by a previous diversion to Brighouse on a day she wanted to take a day trip to York. Until the door failed to open on her return train and she was over-carried to Manchester Victoria.

I was nearly caught out by this last year, the announcements said travel in the front 5 carriages for Brighouse, but only the front 4 opened.

This is also the case next weekend, Easter weekend, the entire week after Easter, and then the two weekends after that in April
It is a novelty to be able to catch a train from Brighouse straight through to Manchester non stop, or as I did last year from Brighouse direct to Newcastle

It's not unusual I gather it must be a regular rerouting for when the line through Huddersfield is closed. However, as it is a small minority of days that this occurs, I do validly consider this an unusual routing. All the more so as I am not quite local to West Yorkshire.

June 2024 timetable frequency on the lines via Huddersfield, off-peak (daily)
(Copied from the December 2023 timetable details, but will amend as details are finalised) :
1 train/h Liverpool to Newcastle (class 802); 1 train/h Manchester Airport to Saltburn via the Ordsall Chord; 1 train/h Manchester Piccadilly & local stations to Huddersfield; 1 train/h Manchester Piccadilly to Hull; 1 train/h York to Scarborough.
The current stopping service between Huddersfield and Leeds will be covered by most Manchester to Hull Trains, adding to their overall journey times.
TPE are introducing a regular service on the Manchester Piccadilly to York via Wakefield Kirkgate & Castleford route that avoids Leeds altogether (Mondays to Saturdays every two hours from 06:58–16:58 plus 21:58 to Wakefield Kirkgate only)
● Peak time service may differ from the above pattern.
