TransPennine Express now have the train formations and unit numbers tracked on Realtime Trains. Where it is a 68-hauled train, it initially looks as though the number is missing, but it is there, you have to look in the info panel on the left rather than it being shown under the train graphic.

Hopefully these will use 68 locos and modern carriages rather than 185s. I would assume this is in relation to swapping stock to/from Longsight following the noise complaints from the Scarborough depot. The 2 afternoon workings at the top are 68s to swap stock whilst avoiding the Scarborough depot. The bottom workings (run Sat/Sun only) are down for a double 185 initally for extra Summer capacity

DECEMBER 2021
The main change affecting our region is that the York –
Scarborough service (currently a shuttle) will start back at Manchester Victoria or Stalybridge, meaning more trains on the core
Huddersfield – York section (though on Sundays this
improvement will only happen from February 2022). Other services passing through West Yorkshire will be largely unchanged.
Basic patterns Monday to Saturday
* Liverpool Lime Street – Newcastle HOURLY (calls at Dewsbury) * Manchester Airport – Redcar Central via Ordsall Curve HOURLY (calls at Dewsbury)
* Huddersfield – Leeds stopper HOURLY * Manchester Piccadilly – Huddersfield stopper HOURLY
* Manchester Piccadilly–Hull HOURLY (calls at Stalybridge). Peak trains have additional stops.
* Huddersfield – Scarborough HOURLY. Note: trains start from Manchester Victoria (most trains) OR Stalybridge (daytime inter-peak EVERY TWO HOURS)

TransPennine Express (TPE) is now consulting on significant timetable changes that would be introduced in December 2022 – and passengers have until January 14 to have their say. The proposal is to swap destinations, along with most of the calls made, so services would in future run Liverpool Lime Street – Hull and Manchester Piccadilly – Scarborough. www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/19808482.train-operator-proposes-major-shake-up-services-west-yorkshire/ To respond to the consultation, submit your response by email to graham.k.meiklejohn@tpexpress.co.uk or by post to Graham Meiklejohn, Head of Regional Development, TransPennine Express, 7th Floor, Bridgewater House, 60 Whitworth Street, Manchester, M1 6LT.

I would be very surprised if there is any significant volume of travel from either Hull or Scarborough to Liverpool, Manchester Airport, or the intermediate stations that are being swapped around – they will have ticket sales data to see if there is any meaningful difference, but apart from that then just go with whatever is most operationally efficient and robust. But however they do it, please make sure that Hull is not left with single 3-car sets!

I saw a tweet with the class 68 with the MK5A sets which run from Manchester to Scarborough, spotted in Sheffield. And I heard that they will be swapping the sets because of noise complaints of the 68. Is this true that the 68s will no longer run to Scarborough anymore? I hope not as I feel its a tad stupid that they upgraded the Scarborough network to be cascaded to another branch and the Scarborough gets downgraded. But, I understand why with noise complaints.

What I don't understand is how they managed to sneak the class 68 onto the UK rail network, they should have been banned on noise grounds but somehow we are seeing quite a few of them. I live directly just over half a mile up from the line through Cottingley and sometimes, depending in wind direction, can hear the blasted things thundering through the valley below during the summer with the windows open, usually first thing on a morning. Quite a few people live right next to the rail line, e.g. those homes just off Whitehall Road near the Dragon pub. They knew they're would be some noise from trains but I bet they're mighty miffed when these things come roaring past.

The problem isn’t the 68s design - its the use of them providing ‘Electric Train Supply’ for the stock. When they are running on Freight, they are vastly quieter. Its the ETS generator that causes most of the noise.

Other way round they're coming off the Scarborough in favour of Cleethorpes to Manchester and they're going on the Redcar's which will run through to Saltburn

I hope not as I feel its a tad stupid that they upgraded the Scarborough network to be cascaded to another branch and the Scarborough gets downgraded. But, I understand why with noise complaints. The main purpose behind the new Nova fleets was to increase capacity, because the trains used to be horrendously overcrowded as a regular occurrence. There was nothing wrong with the old trains except that they weren't big enough, they are still perfectly decent trains that are well suited to the routes. The upgrade meant some routes getting the new 5-car Nova trains, and then on the other routes the old 3-car class 185s would be doubled up to make 6-car trains, so providing enough capacity. As far as I know, no infrastructure was upgraded on the Scarborough line to enable the class 68s to run, so it isn't as though any works were wasted. It's just a reallocation of resources, putting the trains on the most appropriate routes. It certainly isn't unknown for newer trains to be shuffled around and replaced by older trains, and swapping from a 5-car 68+Mk5a set to a 6-car 185 set is not much of a downgrade (plenty of trains to Scarborough have been 185s throughout). My only question is ... if the 68s are too noisy for Scarborough, won't they also be too noisy for Cleethorpes? Or are there so many freight trains on that route that the locals are used to them?

They built a brand new depot at Scarborough for the 68s and Mk5's and its the residents around the depot area that have complained and forced the change. As far as I know Cleethorpes and Saltburn won't have any overnight stabling of them or certainly no need for them to be running during the night.

Surprised the Liverpool to Newcastles are being cut at Manchester Victoria, and I also thought TPE were considering extending the Manchester to Huddersfield stoppers through to Wakefield Kirkgate?
