Leeds Park & Ride - Elland Road SiteI haven't seen a thread about this so heres one now. Well, construction has started this week on the site of Elland Road, where the new Park and Ride site will be. First have placed orders for some Dennis Enviro E400's, a new for Leeds. These are to be painted in a nice attractive pink livery. We all thought that the surplus Volvo Wright Streetcars were going to be allocated to the run. Looks like not. I've been thinking, what happens if the project is a flop like King Lane was. Does anybody know why King Lane isn't popular as it should b? Fares are to be £3 return, not sure if they are going to allow Day Riders, Metro Passes, ENCTS passes. www.flickr.com/photos/21667585@N03/12058949734/Dom

The original thread for the Leeds Park and Ride was on the West Yorkshire "Buses" Board because at that time no operator had been chosen to operate it.

I don't know where this idea that Streetcars were to be used came from when the WYITA document of 27 November 2013 confirmed from the word go that the service would be run using double deck vehicles.
In respect of King Lane I can see a number of problems
1. It's too far out, a 28-33 minute journey is a long time for motorists to invest in a bus ride especially added to the stop/start nature of the regular bus services used to service it.
2. It's in the wrong position, surely it was only ever going to be of any interest to passengers from Otley/Harrogate as it's too far west for motorists from Wetherby, York or A1 traffic.
3. Has it really had any meaningful promotion, no dedicated livery and I've never seen any posters in the city centre. No dedicated website or even a page on the Metro or First Leeds websites.
The new site is much better, 6 minute journey time, every ten minutes and adjacent to the motorway network. Also with a dedicated livery and a reasonable fare although I hope that £3.00 fare is only for the first person and serious reductions are in place for additional passengers as £12.00 for four people would be too much. Also the missing Saturday dates when Leeds Utd are at home would need to be publicised well on a dedicated website. I understand the reasons behind this but it does seem a half hearted approach to Park & Ride to be closed for a couple of Saturdays in December every year, just when it's needed the most for Christmas shoppers, unless they are only thinking of working commuters.

(Fantasy ideas here) would be good to put a park and ride site down the East Leeds Link route at the junction 45 M1/A63. And it would be good if the park and ride site was in Gildersome, near to or next to Birstall Retail Park. Right there u have a motorway interchange m62/m621 plus shops too. Perfect for a P&R site.
I saw Birstall retail park last Saturday and car parking looked a menace, with blocked cars trying to escape.

Considering it has taken so long for Leeds to get its first proper Park & Ride site, I wouldn't complain, or expect any more sites opening anytime soon.

6minutes is a bit hopeful. You can be sat for 6mins trying to get out on the roundabout!
Also, any proof of the E400 order for Leeds?

I proper site which is only available on specific Saturdays.................... and no guarantee of it being available on the last one before Christmas. Will it be on half days on those evenings when there is a football match at Elland Road, must remember not to use it those days, some might say I'm too wise to fall for that one, having six very good reasons to remember.

As First are a keen customer of ADL, and have had issues with Volvo & Wrightbus at the moment. Mainly with Volvo due to the costs of the new engines in the Streetcars costing over a million. But I guess it will be. More than likely. I do think a park and ride site on the East Leeds Link Road will be great, that road since opening has had several routes run on it. 743, X60, X64, X19 and school runs. They are planning on making an incinerator in the area, but up there it is quite, and could support economic growth in the Cross Green Area? Dom

Oh and I bet they're Volvo Wright Eclipse Gemini (with whatever engine they're using these days)

Its definitely a strange one, but one a struggling financially council has to impose - but then that depends on the agreement with First and how the revenue stream is split.

They do though have orders for 40 ADL E400's, for allover UK. I doubt they would be Wright Gemini Eclipses. But we'll have to hold the penny and wait till they come! Dom

Wonder if they have visited the Pride Park service on Derby, that doesn't run on Saturday afternoons when Derby are at home (and some early finishes mid week as well I recall)

Like I said, we'll have to wait and see, but with First's internal publicity on the flickr link, I am 99% sure it'll be ADL E400's, lets wait and see.

I had heard that First were pretty much done with Volvo and would not order from them again and their new bus of choice was an E400 with a Scania Chassis. Obviously all rumour and hear-say but worth keeping an eye on.

The new "Squashed B5" Gemini is an absolute dog of a design. Talk about turning a "beauty into an ugly duckling".Wright`s have really shot themselves in the foot there!

If First are done with Volvo then Volvo's UK sales aren't going to be too good as neither Stagecoach (Except coaches)or Arriva are big on them either.

Apparently Volvo aim to go all Hybrid for 2014. Double decks will be all Volvo B5ls. Discontinuing B9TL chassis. The newer squashed design Gemini's Arriva have are "low height" standard height ones still around. There's a B5L Gemini with a slightly newer design and smaller upper deck windows (why? ). On bus and coach 2013 pictures. I would welcome Enviro 400s to Park and ride ( hoping that they'll be misallocated on main Leeds routes for fun )

This will have a new D5 5 litre engine, this same engine will also be installed on all new Euro6 spec Hybrid B5LH chassis. Of course the existing B5LH hybrid also has a 5 litre engine but this is Euro5.

Glass weighs more then aluminium sheeting! Therefore if you reduce the glass area you can reduce overall weight. As the Euro 6 will have more engine parts and accessories I can see it weighing more than the equivalent Euro 5 engine despite being a less fuel thirsty engine, so there has to be a weight loss elsewhere to compensate.

That and less glass means the interior stays cooler in warm weather. They did the same with the upper deck windows on the Borismaster.
As said above, the B5LH hybrid continues, while the straight diesel will be a B5TL using the new 5 litre unit, while, surprisingly, the B7RLE will be replaced by a B8RLE.
