Is it just me, Or do these new VDL/Wright deckers sound really quiet and muted?. The VDL/Lowlanders had a bit of a "Growl" to their exhaust note, Especially when climbing Scout Hill etc. The DAF Spectra's also have a "Purposeful" engine sound. But these new buses just sound positively "Underwhelming". Im aware that they are fitted with the latest Euro 5 engines and have to be Cleaner/Greener etc. But nice as they are to ride on, They certainly dont sound like deckers of Y'ore.

Personally I'm delighted that they're quieter. People want buses to be quiet and relaxed, apart from a tiny number of enthusiasts they aren't going to want to hear the roar of power. And as long as they don't sound like the screaming cats scratching their claws down a blackboard, like the President B7TLs do, I'm happy!

The Lolwanders and Spectras have an 11 Litre 272 Bhp DAF engine, the new ones have 6.7-litre 250bhp Cummins engines. Some of the lowlanders and 700-717 have a 3 Speed Voith D851.3 (Same a MCW Metrobuses) Voith D851.3 1st 5.30 2nd 1.43 3rd 1.05 4th - reverse 3.84
And some of the Lowlanders & Spectas 718-723 have a 4 Speed, Voith D854.3. Voith D854.3 1st 5.30 2nd 1.43 3rd 1.05 4th 0.77 Reverse 3.84
The new buses have Voith D854.5 which have very low gear change ratio.

Nice to have some new Buses but would have been interesting to see something other than Geminis for the 110 service. Some Scania Omnicitys would have looked smart!

Are these the very same Metrobuses which we were told could do 50mph in first's

Yes they are. The Metrobus that was locked in 1st could do 30MPH in first gear. So could a spectra.

Thanks for posting the above info, I Wasn't aware of the difference in engine size's before. I alway's thought the newer buses "Quietness", was due to more restrictive exhaust and fuelling setting's required to attain this much feted "Euro 5" Status.

From what other poster's on this forum say, The noise you refer to from the B7TLs is the cooling fan. So if they're correct , They'll be a pretty quiet bus at this time of year.

From what other poster's on this forum say, The noise you refer to from the B7TLs is the cooling fan. So if they're correct , They'll be a pretty quiet bus at this time of year. Yes it is the cooling fan but some examples are just as likely to make as much noise in winter as summer. Volvo use a hydraulic cooling fan system on its B7TLs and there has been an issue with the cooling fan motor temperature sensor failing which causes the fan to run at max speed even when cold, hence the noise. As far back as 2006 Transport for London ordered Volvo to rectify (at its own expense) all B7TLs operating in the capital after large numbers of complaints about noise pollution were received from residents! The following is an extract of a statement issued to concerned residents at the time: " TfL has identified an issue with the air cooling fan on Volvo double deck B7TL buses in the London fleet. The manufacturer has been tasked with finding a solution which results in lower operational noise when the fan is in operation on all vehicles of this type, without delay and at its own cost. In the meantime, Volvo’s B7TL model remains legal as it complies with all EU standards and legislation.
Volvo Bus Ltd has been investigating how to optimise fan operation in order to minimise noise, whilst ensuring there is no detrimental affect on engine performance. It anticipates this will bring noise in line with non-Volvo buses. The company’s proposed solution involves updating vehicle software to make the cooling fans operate at a lower speed, thus with less noise. The company has also improved cleanliness and sealing of the radiator units to minimise fan speed requirements."Sadly, the provinces didn't have the clout, or more likley the inclination to insist Volvo rectify their buses so now we have various examples acting like early morning alarm clocks as they roar through the estates. Examples of the First Leeds fleet so affected that come to mind are 30926/932, 32471 but other more temperamental ones have it on a 'it comes & goes' basis. Oh, I'd better go, rambling on like this! Totally off topic but just thought it might give some background
