Thanks stephen01 and Davao. Good to have a thread like this. I travelled a lot more by bus in the pre Arriva days (Caldaire/British Bus) so could definitely comment on the vehicles of that era too. Yep it is. I haven't been on a bus since March 2020 as I've been working at home so it's nice to talk about buses in the past. On another note, does anyone know why they removed the leather seating on the Olympus's after they got removed from the 110? As I thought they could have been a good vehicle for Sapphire or Max at the time?

Thank you for explaning that. As I thought they could have upgraded them or sapphired or maxed them for the 163/166 or 189 ect at some stage to replace the ALX400's and Tempos on there.

In my time at AY, I liked every thing from the old Leyland Olympians, Volvo Olympian, Dennis Lance, Dennis Arrow, Volvo Renown, President, the Darts we used to have. The vehicles I hated the most and not been mentioned, were the Volvo Citybuses, that replaced the Leyland Olympians, which they then eventually got replaced by the M reg Volvo Olympians I've saw a photo of a couple of Lances on flickr that got bought by a company in the West Midlands I think, didn't like the livery they painted them in as they painted, as it was in plain black mostly and on the top of it and around the edges of the bus it was still in arriva colours.

It still had its Arriva Defect Book in approx about 18months after leaving Heckmondwike

Have to say that I was a big fan of the recently departed Volvo B9s with the Darwen/Olympus bodywork (1800-1815) and travelled many miles on them over the years on the 110, 202/3 and latterly the 402/3. Think I may have even done the odd 415 on them too. They were generally comfy and warm and had a great passenger view from the front upstairs. Much more glazing than a Wright Gemini. As a passenger the ‘Volvo’ power could be felt and the gear changes were very smooth. Still not sure I understand stand the logic of the cross fleet movements that resulted in their transfer out of Yorkshire. Yep I agree with you. Brilliant buses, had them many of times on the 147 and 148/149 and had one of the to myself once. The view from them is superb from the front. The seats was nice and warm as well. They left to go to Leicester because of the Clean Air Zone in Leicester and the Olympus I think had already been converted to Euro 6. A price being paid by Leeds now making do with Arriva providing older buses now that Leeds CAZ is no longer coming.

Actually the replacement buses which have arrived from Arriva Southern Counties are actually slightly newer than the Olympii, although probably not Euro 6.

Was there a delay in the olympus's when they first originally came to AY? As I notice 1800 and 1801 are on 57 plates and the rest on 58 plates?

Favourites?
Liked the 3 coach seated National 2's they had as they were unusual, the Olympians, Lynxes and Optare Metrorider's.

I think the first 2 were made by East Lancs, the others made by Darwen Group. At the time of take over from East Lancs to Darwen in early 2008 , Then a few months later by July 2008 the Darwen group got taken over by Optare.

Have to say I agree with comments about the Darwen Olympus deckers, superb views, comfy seating and quiet smooth engines. Wasn't 1804 the driver's favourite though? Not everyone's favourite but I loved the Lynxes, but most specifically the early D reg Gardner engined lynx 1s, they had a fantastic growl to them! If anyone's interested, only 401-5 B10B Striders had comfy seating, the rest all had the rock hard Lance style seats. Funnily enough the Olympians 621-3 also had those exact same rock hard seats but bizarrely only upstairs! The bottom deck had lovely comfy seats. I used to get them regularly on the 476/486 when I was a nipper living in Kellington

Seems like everyone here all liked the Olympuses, seems a thing we mostly agreed on! Your thoughts on the Step Entrance Spectras? Was they better than low floor ones?

I have a soft spot for 1450-1453, brilliant buses, love them when the right driver is driving these things, superb buses, love it when they go into kickdown.

Was the step entrances cheap or desparate because I noticed T Reg and V Reg are from 1999 and there was low floor options then to get deckers like the ALX400 ect. Was it a case of Arriva needing something desperately to get these step entrance spectras? Or part of a cancelled order from another operator like something similar with the streetdecks that went to Ensign Bus

I didn't know ALX300 467 was in preservation until today I came across it on a facebook page of someone who I'm friends with. I think 467 is the only surviving ALX300 from Arriva Yorkshire isn't it? It still needs to be repainted and interior needs to have work on, but the bus is definitely running. I didn't know there was any ALX300'S from AY still around thought they all got scrapped! Pictures of it on flickr if your interested to see it.

Arrivas training vehicles are an interesting one.
I know they had 1 or 2 Lynxes as trainers. Plus the striders for donkeys years. One weird thing I saw was an Optare Delta, as a trainer, did West Riding or Arriva even have any deltas? Can't to seem to recall any.
Think an olympian might have been a trainer as well, and maybe a Leyland National in the early days of Arriva?

Just seemed some money wasted a little bit

The majority of their vehicles went to Dewsbury depot, the Delta was used in service for a short while before it went to Training

Was on flickr earlier, came across the old Volvo Citybuses at Hecky. God they was ugly looking buses, think for me those has to be some of the most ugliest buses ever operated in West Yorkshire, they looked awful, and stuck out like a sore thumb! Much preferred the East Lanc Volvos that replaced them!
