According to a member of management the 415 is to become a Sapphire service from June this year. The current buses will be retained and refurbished.

Refurbished... again? I swear it's only been a couple of years since they were last refurbished for MAX.

That's what I was thinking although anythings possible, the 254/255 buses ordered last year are just branded but the only evidence of MAX branding are on the seats, plus there wasn't really an official MAX launch with them. I'm surprised if they need doing again yet, although I don't use the 415 much these days so they may be more tired than I remember, but on the other hand if they want to up-spec them to Sapphire standard to give the route a bit of a boost then it makes sense.

I thought selby had been downgraded which meant that it no longer receives new buses etc, maybe we’ll see Wakefield transfer their sapphire E400’s and them get new ones, as they and Dewsbury need new ones soon to comply with the Leeds emission laws ...

I believe the 110 Sapphire E400s are going to Heckmondwike for the 268 / 268A.

The 415 will need to be Euro VI by 2020 to comply with the Clean Air Zone in York. Given that Arriva don't have a huge number of old buses in Yorkshire at the moment, they are either going to have to go for retrofitting existing buses to make them compliant or some large scale reallocations, using Yorkshire buses to pension off older vehicles elsewhere.

New ETM's have more priority I believe. Some older buses maybe 'being converted' to ensure they comply to emission standards required by some West and North Yorkshire Councils ! Penfold

I have mixed feelings about this. I like the MAX Geminis on route 415 (and other routes in Dewsbury & Newcastle) but am not so keen on the Sapphire Geminis in Cheshire.

A random question. Was is the PVR on the 415.
The timetable would suggest 7, but as there are 9 MAX buses at Selby, I’d suggest 8?

The timetable would suggest 7, but as there are 9 MAX buses at Selby, I’d suggest 8? 7 buses needed in normal service, and then a couple of spare vehicles so that they should always be able to cover the route with MAX vehicles - although in practice those buses can get used on other routes when not needed on the 415.

I've travelled on 415 a few times lately and know the route well. For various reasons I think it is an obvious choice for Sapphire. I'm surprised it wasn't AYL's first, or at least done much earlier, especially as the aim of all the "brands" is to increase patronage.
Very similar route make up (length/urban rural mix) to AWL's service 1 to Chester out of Wrexham depot. That was one of first Sapphires with refurbed Enviro400 vehicles and has been successful, with brand new Sapphire buses last year.
Despite the 9 Geminis it was being operated by Olympus 1812 the other Sunday when I travelled from Piccadilly to Designer Outlet.

Monday was a Sunday service with 3 1800’s out on 415 duties passengers like them better than Gemini’s Hi Mark, as a passenger I do like them better than Geminis. They feel more airy with seemingly bigger glazed areas and I know the upholstered seats are more popular with a lot of passengers too. Also, the 1800s seem to have charging points like I think the Max spec should have. They do on my local max routes. I've only seen 1528 with them on 415.

The 1800 Darwen’s are the best looking buses AY have owned, would be nice to see them given the sapphire treatment

I’ve been told that due to being short of vehicles because In part buses have been sent to Northern to cover train services the upgrade of the 415 has been postponed until further notice. The 1500’s can’t be sent to be repainted etc as there’s no extra buses to cover.

I was told by a driver at Selby that the upgrade of the 415 is not going to happen and that it is just a rumour.

Well I was told by an Arriva manager that it was going to happen, the same manager has told me that it’s now postponed due to a bus shortage. Unless Arriva management are spreading rumours of course 🤔.
