Seems as though the "trivia" kind of threads are growing evermore popular, so as the title suggests, what would you do?
This could be service changes you wish had or never happened, timetables you would tweak & amend etc.
Be interesting to see some of your thoughts & ideas!

I would time the Ripponden Corridor to be better. Service 562 leaving Halifax to Ripponden at xx00, 586 at xx15, 561 at xx30 and 587 at xx45. I would also re time the 586 in the morning. 05:50 from Commons and then another one at 06:50 and then the one at 07:40 to bring back the more reliable timetable.

I'd introduce a full daytime service to both routes X56 & 16A. 16A Would run every 20 Mins with 16 also being reduced to Every 20 Mins, offering a combined frequency of Every 10 Mins on common sections (Driver numbers allowing),what would improve links to Rodley plus give them a Firstbus into the city again. (although might kill off route 86 between Rodley & Bramley)
Route X56 i would also have running Every 20 Mins M-Sat & Half Hourly Sundays offering improved fast links to Swarcliffe & Whinmoor, possibly having half of the route 56s terminating at Swarcliffe to compensate.

I wouldn't normally join in on this, but routes like the X56 should be encouraged.
X49 is one I could suggest and was on the cards, running non stop from Kirkstall road to Leeds CC, utilising bus lanes.

I'm not sure spacing them out like that would help much. The 586 and 587 take 23 minutes between Halifax and Ripponden. The 561 takes 47, so you'd take 9 minutes longer getting that than waiting for the next bus. The 562 takes 34 - so you'd get to Ripponden 3 minutes earlier than waiting for the direct bus. Before the Mill Bank buses went on such long diversions on the way to Sowerby Bridge they were sometimes the fastest way to Ripponden (and as I was often heading for somewhere between Soyland and Ripponden even more often). Now the only time I've caught one recently is travelling from Barkisland to Soyland. Last time I caught one from Sowerby Bridge to Ripponden the Mill Bank bus was overtaken by one on the main road in most hours (quite an achievement given how few buses there are now to Ripponden).

I fully agree with 'Enviro 576' about the comments about the Halifax - Northowram - Shelf routes - the 508 (run by Halifax depot) and the 681/2 (run by Bradford). I have been complaining about these services for over 20 years and nobody at Firstbus seems to realise that Northowram is a sizeable and expanding village, 2 miles from Halifax with one of the most unreliable and lowest frequency of any corridor in the district. What really irritates me is that 'the powers' do not seem to realise that they are running services by the same company! Outward from Halifax there is a certain degree of evenly spaced timetables during Mon-Sat daytime, but just as importantly - there is no even spacing inwards to Halifax 4 buses per hour, most running a few minutes behind each other before the long gap. In the evenings things are much worse, each route having an hourly frequency with huge gaps. I have tried writing to Firstbus / Metro many times with no results - but maybe our new mayor maybe able to do something?

High frequency services are timed through high patronage areas. The 681 will slot in down the bus corridor and the 508 will slot in out of Leeds on Kirkstall Road.
In this day and age, it's not a massive problem with live bus tracking.

The 508 and 681 run within a few minutes of each other out of Halifax, and then the 60 and 508 run within a few minutes of each other down Leeds Bradford road. It's nonsensical. The Kirkstall Road part of the route is irrelevant as there are plenty of other services down there.

In this day and age, it's not a massive problem with live bus tracking. Along Kirkstall Road the 33 and 34 are timed to be every 15 minutes. The 508 goes between those gaps. With 2 60s and an A1 every hour as well, it's not terribly important where the 508 slots in on that road. Whereas, coming out of Halifax it could be retimed to avoid large gaps.

With the 670 now withdrawn, the section should now have a more even service. Agree about the 508/682 on Halifax Road.

Leave the 508 the same and change the 681 as it doesn’t slot in with anything else. There are frequent services at all kinds of frequencies on Manchester Road

I think the issue is that the 508 has changed times many times trying to cope with the traffic into Leeds and also runs at different times across the day whereas the 681 is a very simple service and I think has been pretty much unchanged for many many years, so I think an even service would be quite hard to achieve

This might not be a popular opinion but could axing 508 be the best way to improve things? Replace it with a flat 15 Mins 681 & a new service from Home Wood Estate into Leeds Via Thornbury & Farsley.
I Doubt there are many end to end passengers (less so when the trains start to improve again),a simplified 681 could be a good one for First to promote & try to increase ridership, whilst a new direct service from Holme wood Est to Leeds might get more people onboard, the only bit that would see services reduce is the section between Odsal Top & Culter Heights but there would be still be services into Bradford from them areas.

I agree the 681/2 are simple straightforward routes which have been stable for over 45 years. An improved 15 minute frequency Mon-Sat & a regular 30 mins evenings would be most welcome. The 508 has always been a difficult route to operate - a long interurban route with little high speed running and covering many urban areas with the associated congestion. Unfortunately, we residents of Northowram have to put up with being at the end of this route - hence the unreliability into Halifax. Maybe a much shorter Halifax - Northowram could be reintroduced to cater for these passengers - but a turning space would be difficult. Much older residents will remember the Halifax Corporation Routes 2,3 & 4 plus we had the Hebble 7 to Bradford, 15/28 to Leeds, 29 Flyer on Saturday to Bradford and the X12 Bradford and Manchester!

If people are to be enticed from their cars, then bus services need to be more frequent, more direct and to do this, encourage operators to add limited stop or express services to major points, with feeder services (from estates or smaller communities) to the points where the aforementioned limited stop/express buses call.
Tickets would be issued as through fares, allowing an unlimited number of changes for a given amount of time (as in in London).
Best of all though, would be the same ticket allowing multimodal use.

I Agree with this, although if we get multimodel use would there be need for express buses compared to an improved train service? Using Northowram for example run a frequent bus to Halifax (or possibly Hipperholme/Lightcliffe if a station does appear there in the future) connecting with the trains & if we ever do get 'NPR' then a 681 into Bradford & 10 mins into Leeds on the train would still be quicker than an express bus straight through to Leeds. A short service to from Northowram could be run as a circular via the 681 route as far as Stone Chair roundabout then return to Halifax via Halifax Road If there was a time when something like that would have been introduced, it would have been when TJ Walsh or HJC were operating, but neither did, so even them must have seen it not worthwhile HJC Did serve the corridor with the 509 to Leeds (later Bradford) plus i think alot of the housing expansion happened after HJC closed.

A nice 10 minute service between Halifax and Sowerby Bridge would be nice. Timing point moved from Station Road/Tesco to Tuel Lane Bottom in Sowerby Bridge with enough time to pass through ontime (-1 early/+5 late) but not that they will wait and cause obstruction. Doing this is also better for passengers as it won't be running early and then waiting 5 minutes past the main points on route. Sufficient time included after Sowerby Bridge - Sowerby/Ripponden to account for passing through late.

Reference Northowram. Joseph Avenue/ Coley View/St Matthews Drive were built very late 50's/60's. Thelarge Windmill Estate and Stephen Close were built late 60's/70's. All the recent development at the old Hospital and Upper Lane are from the 90's/ noughties onwards. Half the problem with the bus serices there is that probably near three quarters of the village is a substantial walk to the 'main drag', Bradford Road. Sadly, in retrospect, the transport authorities have done the village quite a dis-service since 1971, the Hebble takeover, and seem to have failed to grasp that the village was expanding enormously. As a consequence, the biggest part of the village is now served by a once an hour small bus that goes via Shibden valley. Otherwise you have to risk a walk of probably up to a mile down the likes of the 'cat steps' and Joseph to get to the 2 interurban services, as for getting home, its quite steep up to the village!!!!!! The thing is that the village has become very much a commuter hub for the big cities around it, but not a public transport commuter hub, a prvate car hub. My, how things have changed there since I sat on the Police Station wall watching the Hebble and Corpy buses come up the hill. Having said all that, my mum died 4 years ago, which was the last time I visited the village, and I must say, as a PCV Driver in my 43rd year the way people on Towhgate park their Chelsea Tractors/SUV'S, would it really be worth the risk of running a more frequent/bigger bus service. Probably not.

BRADFORD AREA
Bradford – Denholme (evenings) a extra service every two hours, either by putting the 67 back to every hour to give a more even Cross Roads – Keighley service, or have the 607 as a standalone bus running alternate trips up to Denholme.
