School buses are exempt from the Bradford CAZ That just smacks in the face of typical double standards from typical councilors, the one major thing this zone is to be introduced for, e.g. to protect the health of kids going forward, is compromsed when the vehicles they travel on won't need to meet clean air standards. So, operators can continue to park up with any old vehicle for school use outside schools even with dirty engines running, bet the press would have a field day if they pick up on this one. Always going to be the case. Would love to see the cost increase in the tender bids & Metro passing out at the thought. However, school buses have to meet Euro IV. Surely the biggest issue is the non-inclusion of cars in the CAZ? Atleast one dirty bus can take 70 dirty cars off the road?

As others have said - schools aren’t exempt but set to a lower level of Euro 4 with DPF. It is likely that future contracts will require Euro 6. Given that most midlife buses will have been retrofitted it shouldn’t take much effort for schools in the CAZ to switch to Euro 6 in due course.

'First Bus is no longer pursuing an order for Arrival battery-electric buses as part of its involvement with bids to the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) scheme in England that have been allocated funding. What a waste of 23 million, Leeds already has more than enough new buses, with even more due! That money could go a very long way towards repairing all the rough streets buses bounce over every day throughout the county. A classic one is the bus lane Leeds bound just past Kirkstall Abbey, you can have all the shiney toys you like, but if it's a rough ride then it won't tempt people out of cars so the object is defeated! Money could have been better spent on Bradford or maybe some electric buses for the First Huddersfield 370/1/2 and First Halifax Mixenden Corridors or the 548/9.

Also I've just seen charging equipment at Belle Isle, would this mean if this does ACTUALLY go ahead, the 126/127 would have to move to Wakefield depot, as the charging points would be there? it would which would be a case of robbing peter and not paying paul as that would be a massive staff reduction at Dewsbury unless the 202/203 gets an increase and the other routes too. NB: just worked it out prior to the last changes for 126/127 there were 11 buses/boards when they interworked together used with the evening peaktime trips interworked with 212 & 283. Now since the recent changes with 126/127 interwork with 280 the 126/127 no longer interwork with each other so one on board a vehicle will to a circular on 280 and then a 126 to Wakefield and come straight back out as a 126 to Dewsbury and then on to 280 again. Another board will do exactly the same but this time after the 280 circular it does 127 to Wakefield and back to Dewsbury as 127. Since the reduction in frequency to every 15 mins it requires an extra 4 buses. To enable the ZEBRA bid to work i'd say the 126/127 will be stopping interworking and increase back to every 10 mins to allow the transfer to occur. The 126/7 probably won't increase the frequency back to every 10 minutes but they definately would stop interworking the 280 because the electric equipment will be installed at Bell Isle meaning that the 126/7 will have be dutied by Wakefield drivers and vehicles.

Found this! I don't really understand this map too much though Some areas are easier to see than others. In Calderdale it covers the Todmorden and Hebden Bridge local networks. In Bradford it covers the 662 to Keighley and the A2 and A3. In Kirklees it's the Huddersfield to Holmfirth routes and the 335 Leeds and Wakefield you could do with better definition in the map, but clearly the A1, 268, 110 and 7s are included. Also looks like the map includes the X4/X7/X10 routes from Holmfirth into Huddersfield.

Hopefully more than just the 3 trips a day on the X4, X7, X10. This was in the expression of interest document - the tendered services in Todmorden and Hebden Bridge and the Stotts network were included - hence ‘Combined Authority’. These weren’t taken forward in the final submission though there is further funding as yet unallocated to operators or routes identified too.

I am led to believe that Bradford won’t see electric buses, are more likely to peruse hydrogen buses.
Apparently, you can’t have both electric & hydrogen ‘fuelling stations’ on the same site for safety reasons.
Bradford been more hilly, hydrogen would be more suitable.

I remember reading an article about a french city ditching a hydrogen bus order for electric as apparently hydrogen buses are six times more expensive to run. Considering that and the fact that routes struggle with diesel buses which are presumably cheaper than both, I don't think it will end too well...

That would largely depend on the fuel costs and we all know what is happening with price of electricity. Hydrogen buses are more expensive to buy but have advantages of shorter fuelling times and longer ranges than electrics.

I think First Aberdeen have gone down the Hydrogen route, instead of pure electric like First Glasgow. Aberdeen have a fleet of gas powered Wright Streetdecks. Maybe this is the type that might end up in Bradford.

Thanks for the link,i wounder if it is cheaper in the UK as the Hydrogen buses have been bought as part of a wider scale introduction for hydrogen to the cities (Birmingham's 'Energy Park' where they get refilled is in partnership with various Unis & private companies across the Midlands,whilst Aberdeen is with the council & various energy suppliers) So its possible Bradford could look at similar funding partnerships? I'm not sure about the argument over Bradford being too hilly for battery electrics mentioned before,as any extra power being used to get up a hill will be recouped coming back down so it shouldn't affect range too much plus Glasgow & North Wales are not really flat areas yet are seeing electric vehicles introduced.

Another ZEBRA scheme has been announced. 25 million of it is allocated towards rural bus routes. Rest seems to be for normal bus routes. Total being 129 million.

Any news about Wakefield? I don't recall them making any amount of progress the last time this thread was active. Is this still the case? I don't think they have backed out of the bid either?

I'm guessing any news will come after the sale of Arriva is completed early next year, They've not (yet) backed out & I'm guessing whilst they still attempt to sell the 'EP Plus' instead of franchising they will be wanting to see the bid through.

At last some news about Wakefield The reason they are so behind is apparently due to complications acquiring land. It seems they wanted to build a new depot at Newton Bar, while selling off Belle Isle. They are now planning to redevelop Belle Isle, while electrification is due to begin in the new year. With 47 electrics due in 2025.
