More unrest about Tates Services David Young, interim director general at SYPTE, said: "We continue to assist Tates Travel to put positive changes in place across their whole network. Under our conditions of contract, and with backing from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, we insisted Tates Travel develop an action plan which is now in place. We hope this will improve the quality of service they currently provide in Shafton." www.barnsley-chronicle.co.uk/news/article/10312/elderly-bus-users-unsatisfied-with-unreliable-servicesSounds like the action plan is only working in South Yorkshire, but reading some comments the plan must be top secret it doesn't appear to be in the public domain, maybe it is only available offshore..........

Ironic that the bus featured in the previous post suffered an engine fire at Ingbirchworth Are we sure that that was the exact vehicle involved, as reports say that there was a second ex Airport MCV running around.

In that case then no I was only aware of the one, I don't take that much notice of the Tates fleet

I only know that the machines accept ENCTS cards but not all the time. Would this mean them losing contracts and tenders??? Also Lyles will need to change the four Longstaff ones too but they may go for ticketer or the Wayfarer one like arriva. Doubt they would loose work over it, but they could loose money if Metro were to decide that ENCTS & MetroCard revenue was to be paid only upon submission of the ETM data showing card numbers accepted, and any manual entries were not to be paid. Didn't think any passes were electronically accepted by the Tates machines - certainly weren't 12 months ago, and not heard anything differently from the drivers I speak to.

I've seen them been used on King Longs, 1511, 1512, 1542, 1543, 1571, 1612, and 8341. Also noticed on 1081, 1511 & 8341 have different blinds control blocks. (a box with number only). Is it wishful thinking on my part that Tates get there comeuppence. Also if Metro are insisting on fully functioning smartcard readable machines wont over T.E'S like Travl South Yorkshire have to make sure all operators have them. I also forgot to mention Poppletons & Bassi Travel/Yorkshire Greenline will need to update therirs as the latter use a mish-mash of old machines. Can I ask why you would like Tates to get their comeuppance?

I wonder if the same will apply to their WY services!! Bus provider promises service improvements AN under-fire bus provider has promised to make major improvements to boost the punctuality of its services in Shafton. Tates Travel told the Chronicle that it has recently undergone a management change and called for passengers in the village to be patient while they work 'tirelessly' to improve its 34 and 34A services. A spokesman said: "We are aware of the problems that we are facing and are working tirelessly to rectify this by looking at a plan of continued improvement to our services. "We have recently undergone a major management change and we would ask our customers to bear with us during this period. There will a major and sustained improvement over the coming weeks and months." www.barnsley-chronicle.co.uk/news/article/10564/bus-provider-promises-service-improvements-

Do Island Fortitude still have a stake in Tates? I see King Long have now ditched them following the bad press they recieved, so probably no more KL's for Tates. Island Fortitude seem to have sold or wound up most of the other bus companies they acquired.

Island Fortitude have sold their stake in a Southampton operator (Xelabus?) to a company in South Wales. Seems like Island Fortitude want rid of their bus operating units.

It is Brijan though I think the deal fell through just after it was announced although I'm not sure what has happened since.

Another batch of drivers are leaving the company this next week so only time will tell ! Also any true in the rumour that the Kinglongs are to be returned to whomever (owner/leasing company) soon ? Although coincidentally Xelabus are currently in the process of buying the assets of Brijan from IF at the moment.

Yes Insider info would suggest that Tates is in fact on the brink of folding:
1). Senior management have started rolling up in top marque cars such as Bentley's, top of the range BMW's, a porsche, and their latest aquisition is a brand spanking new Audi Quattro, with a typical price in excess of £50,000 ..... meanwhile investment and maintenance of rolling stock remains pitiful if non-existant.
2). Their drivers have all been instructed to complete "new starter" forms in, under the pretense of "updating their systems and employee records"
3). The company is now under investigation by the Traffic Commisioner for repeatedly failing to run services in both South and West Yorkshire - despite colossal penalties been issued for non compliance.
It would appear they are now going through what is called a "damage limitation" process, whereby existing drivers have to sign "new starter forms", thereby losing their accrued employment rights and entitlement to redundacy payment as they are supposedly now employed by a new company. It would also appear that their senior management, by aquiring such high value cars, are in fact creaming off what they can, while they can in anticipation of having their operators licence withdrawn at their forthcoming hearing. Also interesting to note that Mr Paul Bicknell is also one of the senior management team, who just happens to be the owner of the Bentley, Porsche and a Maserati (yes the very same Paul Bicknall who was subsequently found guilty and jailed in late 2007 for stealing almost £250,000 from his then employer, and yes, the very same Paul Bicknall who is or was associated with the offshore scamming company, "Island Fortitude", who I believe are currently under investigation by Home Office and Scotland Yard for fraud.
Yes, Tates continue to make front page headlines of the Barnsley Chronicle - ALL for the very wrong reasons. A very sad state of affairs for Tates to be in as they could be a very lucrative and successful business under the right management.

Interesting to hear all this about Tates Travel. I had heard that Island Fortitude had been given the elbow and the previous directors had regained full control so who knows whats going on. What is clear is that standards have been falling here for a while from a customers view anyway. Watch this space i guess.

What is clear is that standards have been falling here for a while from a customers view anyway. Watch this space i guess. I'm not sure whether Tates have given Island Fortitude the elbow or vice versa. However, a few months ago Island Fortitude did issue a press statement saying that they were ceasing all their UK investment operations. I rather suspect that "I.F." have done what they normally do, that is to hand back a business that is now on the brink of collapse, which they have (and I apologise for my following terminology) "Bastardised" after having stripped and creamed off what they can. Whether or not their press statement is anyway connected with the ongoing Home Office and Scotland Yard investigations remains unclear. Yes, one of the previous directors of Tates (Scott Woolly) has now regained control of the business and is now sole Managing Director of the whole group, while Graham Mallinson (whome I've known for over 20 years) took early retirement early this year. After doing some digging on "I.F." and their activities, it would seem that not one single business they've aquired has survived, and I fear that Tates are no different. On a lighter note, I do wish Scott and his team the very best and hope they can and do pull off the improbable.

I am told, from 5th September, that Arriva will be running Tate's tendered runs on the 212, plus the 213 once again.
