Shock this morning, B6 601 in use at Harrogate, had to do a double take to make certain it was not 611.

To my surprise today I saw H&D Volvo B6 614 in service in Harrogate on route 6 at lunchtime. 611 was also on the route. Cheers Andy

Seemed to be a vehicle shortage for Transdev Harrogate this morning as both B6s 611 and 614 were in use on full length route 1 workings leaving the short workings solely in the hands of the Solo.

After using both the Enviro 400 demonstrator, and B9 3613 on the X43, 15 more B9s are on order for the route after drivers favored the Volvo.

I hope this order replaces the 15 oldest double deckers with Blazefield- they really need to start. They need 15 a year until 2016.

I heard that the law regarding low floor buses by 2017 has been changed so it's not as strict to save mass purchasing of buses in 2017, instead they are making it so operators have to dispose of a non DDA compliant vehicle if there is a major fault with it (e.g. Engines blowing up etc) anytime after 2016

Not too sure if it has changed recently, however The Public Service Vehicles Act 2000 only list certain exemptions: www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2000/1970/made (If you want to read the whole thing!) Exemptions 4.—(1) The requirements specified in regulation 3 do not apply to a regulated public service vehicle which is— (a)an off-road vehicle within the meaning of paragraph 4 of Annex II(A) to the 1970 Directive; (b)used in accordance with section 19 of the Transport Act 1985; (c)used for the secure transport of persons (including prisoners); (d)specifically designed for the carriage of injured or sick persons; (e)used by or for purposes of a Minister of the Crown or government department or in the service of a visiting force or headquarters; or (f)a vehicle in respect of which twenty years have elapsed since the date of its first use on a road and which is not used to provide a local service or a scheduled service for more than 20 days in any calendar year. Reading point (f) could mean that step-entrance vehicles could still be used in service after the respective dates for DDA complaince, just don't do it too often!

If that's the case, I am sure that my boss would be dancing cartwheels at this point. He isn't, or certainly does not appear to be. It would solve him the problem like a lot of smaller operators, of a big investment in DDA compliant buses in 3+ years time. Before anybody says anything, I am not championing the cause of non-DDA vehicles.

northrob Section 4 (1) (f) as defined would be of no use to Transdev as the elderly vehicles are needed on schooldays so that takes care of the 20 days a year. I think that this section is aimed at preserved vehicle running days., not for multi-national companies unwilling to invest in replacement vehicles. Operating a fleet of SIXTY vehicles currently from 15-29 years old is gambling on a blown engine and other problems, and in environment conscious days a fleet of buses with non-Euro specification engines is a poor show for a MULTI-NATIONAL COMPANY, not a struggling small time operator. The annoying aspect for me is the MN status of the company.
ratty- As for the bus company you refer to, the boss has only himself to blame for purchasing unsuitable vehicles knowing the DDA was looming over the horizon. Its like opening a smoking café at Christmas 2006 knowing a ban was to come in the following July. CBNW could use the section above however for heritage running days in the summer.
