Not sure whether there had been a breakdown, but a lowloader truck with 'Bus & Coach Recovery' all over it was squeezing it's way out of Russell Street in Keighley yesterday lunchtime. That sounds like it had just taken a broken down bus back to K&D's depot, its off Russel Street. Low Loaders are used mostly for breakdowns of single deckers, and saves taking the Half-Shaft out. Buses on suspended tow have to have their Half-Shaft removed if travelling for more than a couple of miles as does damage to the Gearbox or Axle (cant remember which) so Low-Loaders can be a godsend as can be winched straight on the back.

You only need to disconnect the half shaft if you cannot engage neutral. If the bus engine fails and it's stuck in gear turning the drive wheels will try turn the engine. I'm not sure it is possible to put a decker in a low loader without having to comply with oversized load restrictions.

Deckers usually come in on suspended tow, otherwise the load would be above the safe 16"6' height restriction for UK roads. All breakdowns i have had have had the half shaft removed, it could be something to do with the oil in the gearbox getting hot or something, i cant remember really. Will ask a fitter on Tuesday if i remember.

I don't know what a shaft is but I saw a Gemini broke down the other week in Bradford & the mechanic took something out of the centre of the rear wheel and stuffed it with disposable towels.

I don't know what a shaft is but I saw a Gemini broke down the other week in Bradford & the mechanic took something out of the centre of the rear wheel and stuffed it with disposable towels. The half shafts take the drive from the Differential, the big bulge offset on the rear axle, to the individual drive wheels. What you saw being removed would have been a half shaft. The mechanic would normally just take the short one out. That one is usually the one on the nearside and come out away from the traffic. The differential will then normally allow the other wheels to turn freely. If you are towing a long distance it is advisable to remove both half shafts, otherwise the differential is in danger of ceasing.

Cas' Dart 171 Broke down on the main road outside the bus station this tea time, the driver had to wait an hour for the fitter to arrive and it was causing bad congestion in the area. It needed the battery boosting and a full 5 - 10 mins with the foot to the floor while the fitter went to Greggs. lol

Huddersfield Bus Co 625 had failed at Horbury Bridge, it was parked up just after a bend on the A642 with only one nearside rear light visible. The rest of the bus, interior and exterior was in total darkness.
