DECEMBER 2021 • Service gap in the morning around Wakefield / Pontefract resolved Notably, the Huddersfield – Wakefield – Castleford service remains withdrawn save for three daily trains each way, apparently reflecting an ongoing staffing issue. * Resumption of hourly trains on the Halifax – Bradford – Leeds – Hull route. * Second hourly train introduced on the Knaresborough – York section of the Leeds – Harrogate – York line (i.e. 2tph throughout): stopper to run half-hourly through to York. This will include Sundays and most evening trains. * Additional trains on the Leeds – Skipton – Lancaster – Morecambe line via Bentham, new/restored journeys at: 07:25 Skipton–Carnforth only 09:41 Lancaster–Leeds 10:18 Leeds–Morecambe (and return) * Semi-fast trains Leeds – Wakefield Kirkgate – Barnsley – Sheffield increased back to twice hourly, with additional train running through after Sheffield to Lincoln. Sheffield – Lincoln: to start back at Leeds via Wakefield Kirkgate, however this will still be a stopper between Sheffield and Lincoln. TIMETABLES www.northernrailway.co.uk/travel/timetables

The Harrogate line however sees a basic half hourly service all day with no peak extras, although the LNER services will compensate to a point. Additionally to the above, the lines via Sheffield are also affected, but again I think it's just some journeys cut rather than a frequency cut. It's apparently due to staffing issues but with only single workings cut, or peak extras that can't seriously be down to staffing can it?

Rather bizarrely it currently seems to run empty from Leeds to Skipton and then again from Carnforth to Lancaster (though gets there after the next service from Carnforth). Do you know if the Bradford cuts are down to staff shortages or fewer passengers?

They can't get a passenger path from Leeds to Skipton hence why currently it starts at Skipton and from May will start at Bradford.

From another forum there's no path to get from Carnforth to Lancaster without spending 10 mins in the loop. It has to get out before the Avanti Glasgow to Euston but the northern can't run all the way as it'll delay the avanti, but has to clear Carnforth to let the Barrow to Man Air out, so they bob it in the Goods Loop and it follows the Man Air into Lancaster

I'm guessing the two ECS parts seriously diminish its attractiveness. Extending to Bradford may help a little.

It does at least provide a reasonable <10 minute same platform connection into the service from Barrow to Lancaster and Manchester. Attempts were made to get the Goods Loop passenger certified to allow a through service to operate, albeit slower and overtaken, but it wasn't possible.
There have been occasions where the service from Barrow has been cancelled that the ex Skipton service has picked up its path and run to Lancaster in service ensuring that connections could be met.

The Calder Valley Line is the second most busiest Railway Line in West Yorkshire with trains struggling when it comes to 3 car trains running every 15 minutes from Hebden Bridge to Leeds (with exception of Mythlomroyd, Sowerby Bridge and Low Moor.

Do you have any info to back up your claim that it’s the second busiest?

195103 and 195109 are currently coupled together in Leeds working the 12:44 to Chester. I didn't know 6 cars could work this route, I know New Pudsey will only take 4 cars.

The sets working the 12:42 and 13:12 ex Leeds were coupled together Leeds–MCV, calling at the stops of the 12:42 but running in the path of the 13:12 (due to staffing difficulties). I have been on a 6-car set, only the front door of the rear set is opened at stations.

On the Wharfedale, the hourly service doesn't kick in until after 08:22 from Ilkley and 08:47 from Bradford. The usual times apply until then.
Likewise, while the 14:03 from Leeds to Ilkley and 14:40 Ilkley to Leeds are retored, the 07:56 from Ilkley and 08:33 from Leeds are withdrawn.
