Airedale, Caldervale, Harrogate, Hallam, Three Rivers (Wakefield), Wharfedale etc lines predate Metro by a few years. I've seen them marked - with the same colours as now - on a 1973 poster. On topic: it's ironic that these line names have been put out to pasture by WYCA the last few years in favour of letting the train operators do what they want, while at the same time imposing mostly nonsensical names on bus routes...
You'll struggle to find the colours on a current map. The current Metro rail map has all the lines in black. Metro was formed in April 1974.

I thought the overground network with different colours worked well in Bradford (that's the city not the district).
However Leeds got a bit silly with the various hues such as Sky blue, olive ? etc.
And the Calderdale one was also daft as it included lower frequency routes.

Wonder if the idea will continue into BRADFORD? There aren't as many now, but a few years ago there were several routes that weren't the most direct between termini, but mainly served an area en route. However extended routes do confuse the issue further.
67 Denholme Line 72 Stanningley Line 363 Brighouse Line X63 576 Queensbury Line 608 Laisterdyke Line 612 Thackley Line + 613 614 616 Wilsden Line 619 622 Manningham Line +626 629 Heaton Line 680 633 Wrose Line 634 636/637 Lidget Green Line 640/641 Eccleshill Village & Little Horton 645 Undercliffe and Wibsey 656 Bolton Woods Line + 675 677 681 Shelf Line 508 682 686 Wyke Line 687 688

Airedale is a geographic area in Yorkshire, England, corresponding to the river valley or dale of the River Aire. The valley stretches from the river's origin in Aire Head Springs, Malham which is in the Yorkshire Dales, down past Skipton on to Keighley, Bingley and Shipley through to Leeds and Castleford and on to join the River Ouse at Airmyn.
Although I would not consider anywhere downstream of Leeds as being Airedale as the River Aire is not really in a valley between there and Airmyn.
Wharfedale is the valley of the upper parts of the River Wharfe and one of the Yorkshire Dales. It is situated within the boroughs of Craven and Harrogate in North Yorkshire, and the cities of Leeds and Bradford in West Yorkshire. It is the upper valley of the River Wharfe. Towns and villages in Wharfedale (downstream, from west to east) include Buckden Kettlewell, Conistone, Grassington, Hebden, Bolton Abbey, Addingham, Ilkley, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Otley, Pool-in-Wharfedale, Arthington, Collingham and Wetherby. Beyond Wetherby, the valley opens out and becomes part of the Vale of York.

Regardless of all this it’s a fact that there is a suburb of Castleford called Airedale

I read that too on Wikipedia and didn't want to trust it bearing in mind anybody can write or alter anything on that site without question. Going back on topic, now the route lines are spreading further out into West Yorkshire, will the WYCA re-name the whole scheme as that would make more sense.

No and their reason will probably be 'Leeds City Region'

I’ve been based at Bradford for the last two years, and we still use the colour branding when we talk about the routes we are doing, like yellow line, pink line, green and red. Only ones that we don’t use often are orange and purple, probably cos they were split

With regards to publication of details, I notice that it is the District sub committee meetings this month so relevant people may wish to raise it there.

I went to Beeston on Monday. Service 1 buses said "Beeston Line" on the front. However, the two new-style electronic stops I passed on the way in to Leeds both said "White Rose Line" (with the lilac colour scheme), even though (a) the first one was for services 1 & 86, neither of which go to White Rose; and (b) I was heading *in* to Leeds, so either way they should have been called/labelled "Leeds Line".
"Dear WYCA, I caught one of your Beeston Line buses at Beeston Hill and it took me to Lawnswood. Have you gone mad?"

"Dear WYCA, I caught one of your Beeston Line buses at Beeston Hill and it took me to Lawnswood. Have you gone mad?" This is where the sheer confusion with these lines comes in. Firstly it's officially supposed to be White Rose Line even though the 1 doesn't serve White Rose, secondly some buses also show Headingley Line both to and from Beeston, and last of all, like you highlighted, would some people seeing White Rose Line on any stop expect the bus to go to White Rose, or seeing Beeston Line on the bus towards Leeds/Lawnswood expect it to be heading to Beeston? There may be some on here who are sceptical of my last point and believe everyone will know the 1 doesn't serve White Rose, as well as in which direction Beeston bound buses go. Well, when the number 10 ran as 'Beeston - Infirmary Street Circular', there was at least 1 person each week who I came across who thought it was a proper circular, expecting it to serve Dewsbury Road after the terminus!

Looks like the Crossgate Line is being renamed the "East Leeds Line" now.

Apparently there's been so many complaints about Cross Gates line, with regards services 5 and 19 that don't serve Cross Gates at all. Did they not consult with usability experts or even simply marketing people about how to make this system work well? If you’re trying to attract new people to use buses, making things more confusing defeats the purpose. The whole idea of lines is really silly anyway, when they’re mostly nothing like ‘lines’. I know this has all already been said in this thread, but I just wanted to vent because it was obvious people would think buses with Cross Gates on the front would go there.

Is Infirmary Street operating two-way yet? I'm not often in that part of town to notice; but I was on a 1 southbound when I spotted a 1 northbound alongside us on City Square, at the bottom of Park Row. Google Maps isn't showing all of the new/relocated stops in Leeds (not on the app, anyway).
Ironically, the new route maps for the 4/4F/14 etc on First's website show two lanes for Infirmary street with the buses taking what should be the westbound lane to travel east, as if the changes haven't been started yet..

I had a walk past there yesterday and the westbound bus stops are still coned off so I don't think buses are running in service that way yet. The road does appear to be operating two way though as I saw a taxi head up that way, although that doesn't necessarily mean they should have been, taxi's and bike's seem to do whatever they like in Leeds city centre!

I've seen plenty of No 1s going up there (turning right from Bishopgate Street onto City Square).

Infirmary Street is officially 2 way all the way, but nobody seems to know as you see endless traffic going down Quebec Street. If only they knew lol.

I've not seen any signs to say it is bus only, but if it is it's a bit of a waste as only one route can go down there. Maybe going forward the 5 and 19 might be able to, but it won't solve the traffic issues from building works on Quebec Street.

I thought the long term aim was to close the part of city square in front of queens hotel and that traffic use Infirmary street instead . Wasn't there meant to be a right turn been installed from bishopgate street onto boar lane so the arriva services didn't need to serve Infirmary street any more

Interesting all, thanks. On Saturday I saw a 1 come up Bishopsgate Street on to Wellington Street and Quebec Street as usual, so perhaps that driver forgot (in the same way as the driver of the bus before the one I caught forgot to stop and pick up passengers...). Signs aren't up yet but it should be buses and taxis westbound from City Square, deliveries entering and leaving from East Parade (so expect PHVs to use it until the cameras are installed (if they're installed)).
The right-turn shortcut for Arriva's buses (in particular) will be very useful, taking minutes off the journey time. It's such a short stretch I'm surprised it hasn't been done already, the new stop outside Tapped has been there for a year.

Anyone agree regarding the new bus stop flags, that all the information is a tad on the small side?
It might all look stylish when being designed on a computer screen, but 10 feet up in the air they aren’t very clear
