As someone who relies on AY living in Ossett, AY are an utter shambles with tatty buses, issues with reliability and route chopping. Can't even get to Halifax from Wakefield or Dewsbury for starters or Leeds from Ossett. only way to get to Leeds from Ossett is with Station Coaches 116 but it only runs Monday-Friday Daytimes.

If you believe BusTimes, there wasn’t a 255 out of Halifax for 5 hours this morning
After the 0808, the next bus was at 1315

Possibly, but some of the ones I looked at tracked perfectly fine from Leeds to Cleckheaton, stopped tracking, and then magically started tracking a few hours later from Cleckheaton to Leeds, which suggests to me no driver to do the Halifax part

It also went down a couple of days early last week and we don't have any tracking data during those periods.

It's no help at all to Arriva's case when at Heckmondwike this afternoon pretty much every Wakefield bound 268 came in not in service, had everyone get off and then drove to depot - all 268 Wakefield services on the board had been cancelled for the next hour

More like Arriva having to comply with regulations and allowing a drivers to have their well earned and required break by law. Or driver has gone over their driving hours, as another possible reason

Cancelling a journey on a 2 hourly service isn't a good idea, but it happened today with the 118 so that's 4 hours between buses on an already poor frequency, now why couldn't a driver be pulled from a more frequent service?

Perhaps the cancellation could have been last minute? Perhaps, driver had nasty incident happening on first part of their shift, which means the 2nd part of shift won't be happening and can't be covered. I don't think it's as simple as just pull a driver from one route to another, I don't even know if they can even do that.

It might go past his finishing time, that then can be classed as enforced overtime, their driving/on duty time may be over their hours or become illegal, legal break times might not be met. There are lots of reasons a bus is cancelled other than no driver. If people are sick of the way services are run, then give the job a go. Everyone is quick to complain but they dont understand the complexities of running a bus service ! Penfold

I don't think it's as simple as just pull a driver from one route to another, I don't even know if they can even do that. It isnt just as simple as swapping a driver from one service to another. If when asked they (the driver) refuses to swap duties there is nothing that can be done. If it is swapped then what about the original service they were on that gets cancelled. Breakdowns, accidents, illness (both drivers and passengers) legality of hours and many other affect why a service is cancelled not just 'because there is no driver'. This is the side that the general public cant understand ! Penfold

No matter how many times you tell the public Penfold, it just falls on death ears, I'm sure they would be the first people to complain, if their break got taken away from their workplace or having later shifts!

Stagecoach change drivers to high profit routes as I have seen it in the Midlands if a service late and drivers out of hours another service what next comes in gets cancelled and put on high profit service

Maybe because the driver in that case HAS agreed to swap their shift beforehand, they don't have to do that. Penfold explained above, not as simple as drivers just swapping to high profit routes, there will always be a valid and reasonable reason why a bus doesn't turn up

Stagecoach often do as if there have 2 service coming in what are the same and quiet they send one on another service or to cover a cancelled service or a needed dupe

They can be ASKED but if the driver wants his original duty there is nothing that can be done. Its a bit like instead of you doing a gentle stroll through the park in the morning you are told you are running the London Marathon !. You cant be forced to do it ! Penfold

One thing what is highlighted is that if you live on an Arriva route with a poor frequency you need money for a taxi just in case. I think Arriva need to re-assess if they have enough drivers and cut routes so they have enough in reserve even if that means handing back contracts, and if WYCA can't find an operator then at least Joseph Public know where they stand, rather than left standing about.
