From what I can see, the spec used by Arriva Northumbria for Sapphire doesn't seem much more than what they use for Max. Their buses don't have the luxury 2+1 seating like Arriva Buses Wales use.

It's for capacity reasons more than anything. I think Wales only have around 55 seats in their deckers, not great! Of course Sapphire has the next stop displays, and power sockets, which the Max E400s don't have too, they both have wi-fi of course.

Wales is the only region to have that specification for its E400s - all other Sapphire routes using deckers use normal 2+2 layout.

The question then, is what is the difference between Sapphire and Max?

Apperntly theres new buses for 189,184,185,410 so ive herd from some staff at castleford It would be wonderfully appropriate for Arriva to introduce some new Sapphire buses onto at least 1 Castleford route the same day as the refurbished Castleford Bus Station opens early next year.

He won't reply with anything concrete, it is commercially sensitive. Plus it will depend on what new buses, and to what spec, they manage to secure from HQ

The question then, is what is the difference between Sapphire and Max? Sapphire buses have plug sockets and USB charging points Aren't the Sapphire services also to a minimum ten minutes frequency?

Sapphire buses have plug sockets and USB charging points Aren't the Sapphire services also to a minimum ten minutes frequency? General idea is a 15 minute frequency, though this is on the core part of the route. We are launching our new buses on the 5/5A out of Middlesbrough tomorrow which is only half hourly at the far end of the route, with a 15 min frequency across the majority of it

Aren't the Sapphire services also to a minimum ten minutes frequency? I think the initial plan was that Sapphire would only be used on interurban routes with a frequency of at least every 15 minutes, but the FAQ page now says every 20 minutes (which gives me more hope for the 415!). But even there, they've given themselves some flexibility, because the Cleveland routes may have core sections running every 15 minutes but significant branches only run at 30 minutes or even hourly on short sections. Although confusingly, the Sapphire website describes the X3/X3A/X4 as running to Whitby, but then gives no indication at all of the timetable between Loftus and Whitby. They've also been a bit flexible about the "interurban" rule as well, as the 38 (Derby) and 31/31A (Leicester) are both less than 30 minutes from end to end, and can only be described as "suburban".

The Sapphire route in Northumberland is only every 15 mins over common section, with long separate legs being every 30 mins. Ironically the MAX route has more common sections, so is every15 mins over most of the route.

The 212 can't be run on its own as the journey time is 65 minutes each way It did so for from its inception for years and taking 55 minutes each way, with a bus each from Dewsbury and Wakefield.

The Sapphire route in Northumberland is only every 15 mins over common section, with long separate legs being every 30 mins. Ironically the MAX route has more common sections, so is every15 mins over most of the route. Both the X21/X22 (Sapphire) and X10/X11 (MAX) are every 20 minutes each and 10 minutes on the core section. The Teesside and East Cleveland Sapphires are every 15 minutes on the core secitions (X3/X4 between Middlesbrough and Saltburn, 5/5a between Middlesbrough and Brotton) before spliting down to every 30 (and X3/X3a down even further to hourly). Weekday Peak time services are completely different - the X4 becomes every 15 minutes between Middlesbrough and Loftus with the normal two journeys carrying on to Whitby as the 4 and the other two carry on as X4s to Easington. As the Streetlites for Redcar/Whitby are split between the two routes (8 will be branded X4/4, 5 for X3/X3A and 1 with just 'Sapphire' branding), the peak Easington X4s should be worked by X3/X3a examples.

One suspect traffic conditions have changed somewhat since the inception that would make a 55 min journey time impossible to achieve? HTH

There's a notice gone up at Selby saying MAX coming to Selby in 2015 Think the 415/6 won't be getting the Sapphire Treatment then An upgrade for a 20 minute service! so will this mean the 59 plate Gemini getting a face lift or is there something new in the pipeline for Selby. For those who like 637 and 639 could this mean a further stay of execution while 1500-1507 are sent away to be refurbished, I suppose only time will tell.

637 & 639 both now parked up at Hecky with NFS on windscreen. Doubt very much whether they will appear over at Selby to cover, if MAX is appearing over there next year
