Likely story is that Asda-Walmart have acquired the land to avoid Tesco/Morrisons/Sainsbury's building on it.

What usually happens is that one supermarket buys a land with planning permission while round a corner or near by the competitor usually comes in with their own but don't actually build anything then the withdraw and sell the land off. That's what happened in morley and mirfield.

Sainsbury's won't build there (have just doubled their current store in size last year)
Tesco have bought the HSS Hire building which is across the road from the bus garage
Morrisons? The current store was rebuilt 2 years ago but is apparently trading below expectations and is also two miles out of town in Illingworth so maybe they might be interested but at the moment they are focussing on opening Elland in January

While they are taking all buses out of Skircoat, where will they go?! They can't move all the school buses out because where will they go? You cant send more buses to Tod because of the size and height of the depot. The School bus storage area up Burnley Road is more a less full... Even if Bradford get the 576, 10 buses going there will still leave Halifax with too many buses to even attempt to put in too little space.

The services are going to other depots and they are buying another plot of land somewhere to house the yellow buses. Who knows, with it gone for £5m they could afford to build a new Halifax depot elsewhere.
As for the Tesco Express across the road, it is going to be tiny, it'll be like a little newsagents for people to quickly run in and get bread and milk, it won't make no diffeence that been across the road to the supermarket because some people don't like queuing in big supermarkets and at the end of the day they'll both still be making money and that's all they are bothered about.

What Tesco Expresses do you go in? They're a fair size, with a few freezers, fridges, fresh isle & every day needs. Whats to say the Express wont close, Tesco build on Skircoat Depot & have the filling station over the road?

Its a thought indeed Kendall. However, I cannot see permission being granted for a filling station on the former Hoffmans Garage premises (HSS), as it is right on a very busy road junction, although when Hoffmans were there many years ago, they had 2 petrol pumps, I think there would be more likelihood of Skircoat getting the nod for a fuel station. Got to agree though, when I go in a Tesco Express, I always have to queue for anything up to 7 minutes, which I think is my record!!!

Just looking at it on Google Maps and I can see it actually working, (Supermarket one side, filling station the other). It'll take some remoulding of the main junction though, but Supermarket chains are not afraid of the idea, providing it is cost effective.
We shall see.

Notices have been put up in Halifax depot stating the depot is NOT to be sold off but the 576 is to go to Bradford full term.
Plans for the depot is unknown possible refurbishment no-one knows just yet.

Oh God, not another version of what is allegedly going on at Halifax, thought it was strange when I asked my dad if there had been owt in t'courier(which is now a weekly paper), his answer was, if there had have been he would have rung me to see if for some reason I knew owt. I would really have thought that something of the magnitude everybody was discussing, myself included, would have made it in to the Halifax evening Courier. Looks like this story is to have more twists and turns yet though.

Right, here we go. Talking to a driver from Halifax, (who was there when I left in 1992), at the Heart of the Pennines rally, I asked what the story was. Bradford have (sadly) got the 576, Huddersfield MAY get the 503, Bramley MAY get the 508. The site was for sale and agreements had been reached. However, he gathers that only last week, the deal is off, something to do with bulk diesel storage at Elmwood and the planners at Calderdale council. I will stress that it is the BELIEF that the deal is off, and only time will tell. Asda were willing to pay £5million pounds for the Skircoat site.

As it is now nearly 6 months since the furore over the possible sale of Skircoat, and the attendant transfer of vehicles/work to other districts I have to ask, has the proposal now been formally dropped or what.

OK then, it was just a rumour. This then means the transfer of the 576 was just a waste of time and resources then does it?

I understood the transfer of route 576 from Halifax to Bradford was to compensate the Bradford depot for losing its 72 route to Leeds.
