In Batley we have tesco petrol station bang opp a BP station so nothing to stop them having one. Maybe it's a petrol station with a tesco express inside rather than tesco with a petrol station

I doubt the Todmorden depot will run the 590's because there will be alot of dead running up and down the valley... I think it will just stay as running the 589 and some selected Calder Valley runnings. Back when the 590s were run by the F reg Olympians, the vast majority of workings were done from Todmorden with only a small number of workings from Halifax. Todmorden had service 500 back then as well. Ideally a new depot in Todmorden would be able to house the allocation for the 589, 590-594, HB & Tod minibuses, Hebden Bridge MyBus Solos, Todmorden BMC MyBuses and possibly the Calder High School BMCs as well.

When one bus transferred somewhere it was all "Skircoat Is Closing" and it never happened.

A bit of an aside, but how do Arriva's low height Gemini's compare with the height of the old low height Olympians?

FYI, as a bit of a guide, when I left YR in July 1992, there were approx 40 drivers at Tod. At the same time the Tod roster at Halifax was either a 20 or a 12 week roster, think it was more likely a 12, as Fax had about a quarter of the work 'down the valley'. It will be a sad day for me when and IF Skircoat shuts, and a point that every poster has missed so far is, that When and IF it goes, Skircoat will have been the last former tram depot in FWY, interesting of course, is that Halifax's trams were the first of the four to shut

Just a brief note to explain the phrase "planning permission" in the UK the standard planning permission is obtained when you wish to build premises on a patch of land you apply for planning permission using very detailed plans etc this when granted allows you to build on the said land.
There is another type of planning permission which is called "Outline Planning Permission this is where the applicant -usually land owner but it can be anyone - ask for permission in principle to build something on that land , it could be housing , industrial commercial etc.
This is done so that the site owner or applicant is sure that if they did apply for full planning permission then they would - subject to the usual full application - get the building they want , its designed so that companies don't spend £000'000 buying land or processing applications which wont go through.
Therefore it is not unusual for companies to have outline planning permission for their sites, indeed I understand that the Yorkshire Traction Company had out line planning permission for other uses for all its sites. This as to be renewed every 5 years but this is what they did. It can in some circumstances increase the value of the land they own and therefore increase the assets on the companies books.
Do we know if the supermarket planning permission for this site is full or outline

If it is fully then it will be on the Calderdale planning application website.

Just been on the Calderdale planning page, and there is no sight of an application. Infact, the most recent decision as regards Skircoat was in 2005, and that was to REFUSE permission to extend the time limit for the outline permission. So if there is an application, it has resurfaced very recently, and Calderdale council have not yet found the computer whizz kid to put it on their site. Perhaps somebody from First who knows and is not guessing would like to comment. As for filling pits in at Elmwood to facilitate fuelling and washing, I have to ask, have First found the secret to having buses that never need repair, after all, its not the biggest garage in the world

All I have heard is that the depot has been sold, doesn't mean anything has been planned as yet, it was onlyannounced couple of weeks ago. If this is a rumour it is a very big one because thats what nearly all of the drivers are talking about round Halifax

First in Halifax’s Skircoat Rd depot has been sold to ASDA-Walmart for redevelopment, I have it on good authority that it will become a supermarket which will also include a Fuel Station.
The 503 is moving to Huddersfield while 576 is of to Bradford at end of this month when service changes happens. Also the 508 service is under review and could be possibly moving early next year to either Bradford or Leeds-Bramley in January.

ASDA have a big store in Halifax already (at the old rugby league ground) that has only been extended 12 months or so ago
Find it hard to believe they'll build another store

In the Examiner News website, it says any store is going to be on the HSS tool hire place. Just like a Tesco Metro or Express...

Nope I have been informed by a reliable source that ASDA is moving, the current tin shed up Spring Hall Lane is been demolished, the reason they are relocating is because they wanted the land at Elland but Morrison's got it first. The new store is more central and is going to be a lot bigger with Petrol station so it will make more money than what it is currently doing up pellon

They are a massive multi million pound American company, i think a loosing out on a few thousand from a new floor inside won't matter to them when they will be making twice as much profit than what they were in the new store. There is loads of people that don't go to ASDA because it means going out of their way.

I am not going to go and measure the two sites personally, but if I was still a gambling man, I would put money on the fact that the Thrum Hall site is bigger than the Huddersfield Road site. Plus the current Asda has not been there that long, with quite a large conurbation round it. Skircoat simply has not got the conurbation, so it will probably be something like a mini Asda with an attendant petrol station, we have one in Blackpool, which was a Netto store, and is less than half a mile from the large Asda at Marton. This is what makes me think that it will not be a huge Asda, but more an inflated convenience store. It would make a convenient car park on match days at the Shay though!!

Looking on Google Earth, the Asda site at Thrum Hall is about 3 times the size of the Skircoat Road site.

Oh so it is, maybe it's just an additional small store then. Seems pointless though when the other Asda is about 6 and a half mins drive away from Skircoat Road.

The one in Blackpool I'm on about is even more pointless. It's literally a 5 minute stroll, 90 sec car drive from the Asda Hypermarket, which is why my thinking is as it is. As regards size, the Thrum Hall site had a 7k capacity rugby ground, a large cricket pitch, which was surrounded by what was the greyhound track, a bowling green, and I seem to remember an allotment as well, which is quite an area. Knew the area pretty well, first years of my married life we lived on Newstead Terrace at the back of what was the main stand of the rugby ground. Always missed the kick off though!!! BTW, LJX how fast do you drive? 6 and a half minutes would take some doing from Skircoat to THrum Hall at 30 mph.

It normally takes that going straight across moor when it is quiet at a normal speed (30 - 35mph).
