Can't see a thread of mis-allocations here in the Trains area...
Last night the 2020 Leeds - Doncaster and 2126 return was formed of 153307 which then went on to finish its diagram on the 2256 to Skipton!.... Misallocation or WHAT?!
155346 turned up late on the 2313 ex-Leeds to Huddersfield after being drafted in ex-Brighouse!...Anyone know what happened to the unit that formed the 2231 Leeds - Huddersfield??

AFAIK the 2256 Leeds - Skipton is booked to be a diesel as it stables at Skipton to work the following mornings Lancaster - Leeds, although a 153 is still very rare!

This may have been mentioned before, but why on the Pontefract Line (including the Wakefield stopper) do we sometimes get 158s working at the least busy times? As much as I hate 142/3s, I can understand why we get them regularly here.

Probably covering for an unavailable pacer Or possibly utilising a spare train between the peaks to help even out unit mileage (depends on how regular an occurance I guess).. The train lease contracts can include a mileage element that can produce perverse unit workings to reduce the mileage of long-distance units and increase the mileage of local units to reduce the chance of units hitting higher charges.

We do usually have higher capacity units than the pacers on the Pontefract Line mainly for use on the 1716 Leeds to Goole service as this is a well used service. These tend to depart at 0802, 1100 and 1400 from Leeds. I have been getting the train from Glasshoughton to Leeds that often and for that long I know what size train will come when.

Saw Freightliners 70003 pass England Lane Crossing in Knottingley last friday night around 19.10(ish) hauling a rake of oil tankers. Destinatons to and from unknown, although it did branch off left and took to the Asken branch and head towards Doncaster direction.

Not sure if this is a misallocation - but surely it has to be - Northern in all their wisdom decided to put a single 153 on the 1600 Leeds-Knottingley train, which is the second most busy of the day in that direction. I doubt everyone who wanted to get on the train got on it, as by the time it had reached Glasshoughton, standing room was at a premium. Upon leaving Monkhill, there still weren't enough seats for all passengers! Poor show Northern!

In my opinion Northern are getting worse with allocations and even quality. Wonder how they will fair when the franchise is up for renewal year after next.

In regards the single 153 on the Pontefract line, this usually only happens in the event of a failure. Usually all Pontefract services are at least 2 cars, but if it fails, then all that can be done to keep services running is to nick a unit off another service and if all they can find is a 153, it's better than cancelling the service.

More reason for the DfT to invest in new trains for the North which don't fail then - but I doubt we'll see this happen. I reckon Northern must have the most cascaded trains from any other company. Apparently when the Liverpool-Manchester line is electrified we will be 'rewarded' with ex-Thameslink/FCC 319s - joy of joys yet more second hand efforts!

I have been on a 144 on the busiest service of the day at 1716 when for some people they have not been able to get on. I think with the franchises being 10 years I believe there is no incentive really for investment in new rolling stock if they mite loose it by next franchise. I have always found northern ok but since last September I feel it has gone downhill. I do hope it's a minor glitch.

The choice of rolling stock is not the operators. The DfT specify in the franchise the stock to be used, and in the case of Northern, the franchise was let on a 'no growth' basis, meaning that the DfT in their wisdom thought there would be no growth in terms of passenger numbers and therefore no need for additional stock. Northern to their credit have done very well in forging partnerships with outside agencies to provide funds for additional units, and the DfT also provided funding for some of the Class 158's received, but as for new stock, the DfT takes charge of procurement, not the operator.

Yep, DfT realised there was a desperate need for extra capacity and as the units were becoming available as LM got Class 172's, they stumped up the leasing costs to send em north.
As much sense as it would be to let TOC's have some say in acquiring extra stock, the politicians wouldn't have anything to meddle with then.

Yeah, I realised the DfT sort out all the stock, and the units are not actually owned in the main by the TOCs, more leased. It just seems that the DfT have left the North to rot with the oldest trains in the country - seriously, apart from the Class 43 HSTs, are there any older trains currently in service? I believe there's an old 'heritage' 101 in the Aylesbury area but apart from that my mind's a blank! And when we get in ever more increasing need for new trains, we will likely be cascaded with hand-downs from other TOCs. It's like we're the under-privileged younger brother!

Island Line (Ryde - Shanklin) is operated by ex-LU tube stock from 1938, but that is cos coventional rolling stock would not fit through the tunnel at Ryde. Surprised with all the new tube stock Boris has coming, that some stuff redundant hasn't been offered to Stagecoach as replacements.
On the mainline, Southern operate Class 313's dating from the late 70's and some of Greater Anglia's EMU's are early to mid 80's as are ATW and FGW's Pacers and GA's Class 153's and 156's are mid to late 80's, as are Scotrail's 156's so it is not as if Northern are the dumping ground for old stock, just that we have more of it percentage-wise than others.
That said, looking at refurbishments carried out by ATW on it's 158's (20 years old) and ATW and Chiltern on their Mk3 Coaches (At least 25 yrs old), age isn't necessarily an issue. Plus GA are refurbing the 156's including a DDA compliant toilet which will enable them to continue in service beyond the deadline.

In terms of the DMUs though, that's where I think we're more of a 'dumping ground' as we have more 142s than anywhere else in the country. Plus the brand new 172s are going straight to LM and LO, with the redundant 150s making their way here. I realise quite a bit of the EMU stock is old, but most of the lines here aren't electrified so its not as if we get to choose. Besides, they roll over the tracks so much quieter and nicer than a bump and squeal Pacer! Thankfully, no matter what else happens, we will see the end of the 142s and 144s in just over 7 years time.

As far as Pacers go, we are not a dumping ground as we have always had the majority. In fact, had it not been for the 143's moving to what is now FEW and ATW, we'd have had more!

Well, to reiterate, we have the oldest fleet of DMUs, and other fleets with newer DMUs have got brand new DMUs before we have even had a look in. We are blessed with second hand 150s instead. I've a feeling the Valley Lines will see new trains before we do, just because we love the pacers up North. We will probably be sent the 143s if they get new trains before 2019 - what a shudder-inducing thought!
