Amongst the School buses yesterday on VOSA:
PB0000328/366 - EAST YORKSHIRE MOTOR SERVICES LTD, 252 ANLABY ROAD, HULL, HU3 2RS Registration Accepted by SN Starting Point: Cottingham Railway Station Finish Point: Cottingham Railway Station Via: Cottingham, Castle Hill, Bricknell Avenue Service Number: 109C Service Type: Normal Stopping Effective Date: 06-SEP-2010 Other Details: Monday to Saturday Hourly between 09:25 and 17:15
An interesting choice considering the average loading was probably less than 1 passenger when the 154 covered this route.

The 154 only ever provided a Cottingham Station-Castle Hill link. This new service also appears to incorporate the Cottingham-Bricknell Estate link
Currently both links are provided by Stagecoach's 110 and had been since February, when the 154 was altered and the 109 axed
The Cottingham Station-Castle Hill link is probably kept since it would attract complaints should it be withdrawn from hospital patients from Bridlington and Driffield. For the sake a quick diversion to the station, probably not worth the hassle to withdraw it

Good point about the Brickell Av bit. Does this mean EYMS are competing against the 110 or are Stagecoach withdrawing it?

The 110 is subsidised by Hull and East Riding Councils, so I can't see any competition

EYMS have announced in their E-Newsletter that they will be making service changes in York, including a new service. More details will follow in mid-March.

Here is the official list of Changes around York for EYMS:
"Buses to York: new times and new service! From Sunday 20 March our buses to York are getting better! Wicstun Express - a brand new fast bus direct from Market Weighton to York. It's only £6 return, or £25.80 for a weekly ticket. Check out the Wicstun Express now! Services X46 & X47 - new journey times will make this service more reliable. Services 744 & 746 - these buses will be retimed so they co-ordinate better with our other buses, and they'll also be re-routed in York to make them more reliable and direct. Services 195, 196, 18A & 34 - there will be some minor changes to these services."
The Wicstun Express (or X4) is 5 journeys a day M-F and 4 on a Saturday. Looks like a one bus working and from the publicity will be a Wright Eclipse.

They never send the Leyland Olympians up here anymore.

That may be because they only have 11 left in the fleet, 3 of which are delicened. They are based at Scarborough, Bridlington and Withernsea, none of which operate services to York.

Are they likely to do anything with the 128? I fear that this route is in a straitjacket at the moment, they would lose if they cut or enhanced it. It would be nice to see a new 'X28' to Pickering, possibly running through to Helmsley. I'm sure the journey times put people off using the bus here.

It would be nice to see a new 'X28' to Pickering, possibly running through to Helmsley. I'm sure the journey times put people off using the bus here. All that they're doing with the 128 in the foreseeable future is cycling through the usual seasonal changes, and axing the evening services that were supported by NYCC. They've published the summer timetable already and apart from the evening service it looks to be the same as has run in previous years. I'm not sure an express service would be much cop, unless they needed additional capacity anyone justifying a more frequent service. The current route doesn't deviate much off the main road, so the amount of time you'd save would be limited, maybe 10 minutes to Pickering and 20 minutes to Helmsley at best. Maybe I'm being unduly pessimistic, but I don't see those time savings attracting enough extra passengers to justify the extra services, particularly with the Moorsbus not running a daily service in the school summer holidays this year.

I think I've rubbished my own idea here - according to google, you couldn't do a 2 hour round trip express from Scarborough to Pickering then via current route to Helmsley, nor a 1 hour round trip to Pickering, meaning a half-hourly service would have a PVR of at least 5 (up from 3), and you might as well deviate through some of the villages and/or estates in Pickering with the new journeys.

The basic Scab—Helmsley (hourandabitly) has PVR3 with ~25 minutes layover in a 3 hour round trip. The enhanced Scab—Sutton Bank (hourly) has PVR4 with 25 minutes layover in a 4 hour round trip. One option with PVR5 would be: * hourly X28 from Scab to Helmsley, express between Scab to Pickering * hourly 128 from Scab to Pickering, via current route. For high summer when they're running to Sutton Bank daily, I can't see any better option than PVR6 with the extra buses providing an additional hourly service between Scab and Pickering, but it's got slightly lower asset usage than either the PVR5 option above or the current hourly service, and I'm still not convinced there's the demand for more than one double-decker an hour. I'd like to be proved wrong, but I'm naturally sceptical about these things!

Agree about the double decker perhaps been to big. Maybe best of downgrading to an RLE or putting maybe an Enviro 200 on the route ?

I wouldn't fancy being on an E200 all the way from Scab to Helmsley! If EYMS wanted to increase the frequency then they might look at using single-deckers instead, but I don't think that's likely to happen, and even if it did, it wouldn't actually increase the seating capacity by very much (2 B7RLEs only have about 10 seats more than a single B7TL). The current arrangement seems to work well enough, and I don't see them gaining by increasing the frequency.

Years ago they used to use Plaxton Leopards converted with bus seats and also refurbished East Lancs Leopards then moved onto Alexander B10M's right up until the Gemini's came.

Wasn't it Harwicks who had the leopards with bus seats. Didn't they replace the 4 ex Sheffield duel door Swifts. The ex-Sheffield ones were TWE 20, 21, 22 & 28F

Didn't United once run the service ? United always ran the 128 Pickering and beyond while the Hardwicks service ran a Scarborough to Ebbertson. The 128 tended to be direct while Hardwicks served all the small villages en route.
