I have noticed that this year Transdev haven't launched a Summer timetable for the Coastliner 840/3 services which has backfired on them as a lot of people have been left at Scarborough Railway Station due to full buses.

Crowding this weekend on Coastliner I imagine was exacerbated with the rail strikes on Saturday leaving the hourly 843 the only public transport option towards York from Scarborough, I don’t think last years Summer timetable which had the addition of one return X43 journey between York-Scarborough and Whitby plus a short Whitby-Scarborough run would of made much difference to the crowding when there’s no trains. If the trains were running yesterday I don’t think crowding issues on Coastliner would of even been noticed.

I imagine the £2 fare will have something to with it as well. Even when trains are running many will presumably opt for the much slower journey when it’s so much cheaper

I have noticed that this year Transdev haven't launched a Summer timetable for the Coastliner 840/3 services which has backfired on them as a lot of people have been left at Scarborough Railway Station due to full buses. The summer timetable doesn't generally affect service 843 through trips between Leeds and Scarborough, which remain hourly throughout the year. There used to be extra trips on the Flamingoland/Whitby route in summer (and the now-withdrawn Bridlington/Filey service), not sure of the current 840 times. For a few months in 2021, as a result of limited "Covid" capacity constraints, Coastliner experimented with a half-hourly "core" Leeds–Scarborough service, with the other through routes withdrawn (changing at Malton, etc. ) but this didn't prove popular.

Unfortunately due to driver availability and cost it would be difficult to justify additional services, while yes it could fill up especially on days like yesterday, it may still not justify it Just very unfortunate for the pax left in Scarborough - I avoid 843s on weekends and school holidays for this reason

It was much the same at Leeds on Friday afternoon - demand for the 1545 843 was such that it went out at the same time as the 1625 840 (which was empty although the drivers did try to persuade some passengers for Tadcaster and York that they might have a more comfortable journey on the 840). Quite a few suitcases in evidence as well so I guess some last minute weekend breaks being taken.
