Hi,
Formal proposals have been submitted for Arriva to reroute services into the Springs Retail Park at Thorpe Park. This is set to be a vety significant increase in services from 5 a day to every 15 minutes during rhe day.
The diversion of the Arriva bus service numbers 164/165 to connect the Development to Leeds City Centre with the following frequencies:
Monday to Friday: Between 5.30am and 7.30am Every 30 minutes
Between 7.30am and 6.30pm Every 15 minutes
Between 6.30pm and 11.30 pm Every hour
Saturdays Between: 5.30am and 9.30am Every 30 minutes
Between 9.30am and 6.30pm Every 15 minutes
Between 6.30pm and 11.30 pm Every hour
Sounds pretty bold!

Or maybe the 165 would be half the 163s renumbered to operate via Thorpe Park?

This is all Thorpe Park has ever needed - a diversion of services rather than a dedicated one.
It is some commitment by Arriva though with the 163 to be diverted at that frequency. Wonder how many extra drivers it'll add to the boards.

One extra bus on the route would allow them an additional 7 minutes running time each way, which ought to be enough to run up Century Way and back.

Lets hope if they are doing 164 plus a new 165 they have enough drivers.

My understanding from the proposal document is that buses will go up Austhorpe Road then to The Springs via the new bridge onto the Springs and Selby Road.
So I wonder if this will be the 164 instead. Odd they mention the 165.

Could simply be that the 164 Selby journeys are re-numbered 165 with all the other journeys per hour via Thorpe Park running as 164 to Garforth only.

This is excellent news! Have Arriva registered the service alteration and what date will this start? First have cut back the services from Austhorpe Rd and Manston Lane too much over the last couple of years, it's time for some proper competition against First. I was told that half the 163's will be re-numbered as 165 via York Road and all 164's will run via York Rd, Cross Gates, Austhorpe Rd, Manston Ln, William Parkin Way, Thorpe Park App, Park App, Century Way, and vice versa. The 163 route is already duplicated by the 40 between Halton Dial and Cross Gates and this will bring back much needed services via York Road and Melbourne Rbt in the evenings and Sundays! The 163 currently takes a long time round Station Rd and Cross Gates and running via Manston Lane there is much less traffic than Ring Road Halton so it shouldn't impact too much on time at all, it will be a big time saver during peak hours going via Manston Ln!

As long as the 163 still at least runs every half hour through Selby Road, Halton and Gravelythorpe thats fine? That would mean a service going from every 15 mins to not at all and it's well used, even with the 40. Between Melbourne Roundabout and Cross Gates is duplicated by the 56 and current 164.
I'm assuming it's next month but the application was submitted start of April.

One bus, but how many drivers during the course of the day? 2? 3?

Along Green Lane and Chapel Street, the 163 was only a 30 min frequency until the recent changes which created the 164 from the old 402 and 403 route changes. Routing the 165 and 164 back to York Road via Melbourne Rbt will re-instate the old frequency back when the 166 and 402/403 ran which will be much more useful for people like me who use these....plus a huge new advantage of getting to Thorpe Park and the new Manston Link Road without needing to drive!

Oh that's good. Yes I think that's all very sensible aslong as the 163 still serves Chapel Street etc at least every 30 mins. I thought you said that wasn't going to happen.
It simply feels like the 164/165 will serve the X26/7 routes to Thorpe Park except all stops. All very good.

163 runs every 30 minutes and right past Thorpe Park so diverting in I imagine shouldn't be so difficult. 164 again runs right past so diverting shouldnt be so difficult either but might need an extra journey per hour to make up the freqency during the day, maybe one that goes to Thorpe Park only?

This is postivie though because if I wanted I could now catch the bus to work with one change in Castleford rather than having to change in Cas and Leeds and get up at the crack of dawn to make the only journey that would get me to work on time. Would be all good if I could walk more than a few feet 🤣 but alas the 19A is currently my only option.

For most of the day, the 163 runs every 15 minutes. hmm in which case one journey via one journey not? Be interesting to see how it works. I Think it's 2 journeys via (renumbered 165) & 2 journeys not (staying as 163) per hour, with the 164 being the other 2 journeys via. Whilst the changes are a positive for me personally as i'll now have a 15Min Arriva service within 10-15min walk of my house I Do wonder what the people in the areas of Garforth that lost the 166 feel when the changes was meant to bring 'simplicity' & now that's gone out of the window again not long after. I Still wonder why they didn't sent all 163s via Thorpe Park & have the 164 cover the Green Lane area.

Whatever happens, it's great that the Thorpe Park/Springs bus still have a different number. Nothing is worse that having "some" 19As go in and "some" not. Just like having "evening" 19s running via Colton Village when no one is sure when evening starts - certainly not the same time that evening fares start! Thanks for reading. End of rant.

My understanding is that the 163 at night will call at The Springs (after 1830). The 164/5 only operate during the day. So not so uncomplicated lol.
