I've been looking at the service change page on the Travel South Yorkshire website and on it was a note stating that from July 24th, a number of tendered services will no longer run due to lack of interest from operators. Additionally, some tendered services will be cut to fit what the operator finds viable to run! Now, although we don't cover West Yorkshire, it's a similar PTE to West Yorkshire and if they're having issues then it's a sign of things to come up here. In a surprise development however, South Pennine are to run the 44 Rotherham to Chapletown and the 107 Rotherham to Swinton services from 11th July!

As before with the 58 & M92 they took over last year they'll be accepting Stagecoach saver tickets for an undisclosed period. 44 will have slight timetable change and 107 will operate as it is now.

That axe will be in action big style because according to a draft report via the Doncaster Free Press, the mayor of South Yorkshire has said not one bus company is interested in running tendered bus services unless funding for them increases by 1000%! Apparently, according to the report no buses will run past 7pm in Barnsley, although Stagecoach have said some will continue in future as they are more profitable, and very few will run past 7pm elsewhere in South Yorkshire, with Doncaster only laving 1 late bus past 10pm and the X78 finishing between 9pm and 10pm. I can easily see towns like Huddersfield and Halifax seeing their tendered evening/Sunday services, as well as other tendered routes axed such as the 317.
I suspect evening journeys will also be cut in other parts of West Yorkshire, including Leeds because in part they aren't that safe to use. I personally don't use late buses after 7pm because on far too many occasions they attract undesireables, although to be fair many Beeston routes seem to attract drug taking no hopers at all hours of the day, with some irritating drivers actually allowing one fake beggar to ride for free, err I've paid, he lives in a house in Beeston Hill so isn't a beggar but gets away with free rides and hassling passengers at the stop for money, no wonder people aren't attracted to the bus!
What would help drivers and improve passenger confidence is for bouncers to be employed on a random basis patroling buses at any time or place, the 2.3 million spent on carrying fresh air throughout East Leeds (The DRT buses) could have been spent on train style security guards or bouncers.

WY should fair slightly better than SY,as in Halifax & Huddersfield they at least have a 'low cost operator' thats willing to do evening runs (Team Pennine) whilst over in SY the evening journeys look to be run by either First or Stagecoach, what will no doubt inflate prices. In Barnsley the route through Cudworth/Grimethorpe will probably continue as doesn't it have some sort of funding from GXO to serve the big warehouse near Little Houghton? As for complaining over the DRT,seen as the government funding pot was to set up DRTs across the country i think Metro might have had some explaining to do if they spent it on security guards (also if you think you need security on the Beeston routes, you'll be wanting the army on the likes of Halton Moor or Holme Wood routes!)

The Flexibus has proven very popular on the local Facebook pages and has certainly covered for some of the Arriva services in the last 4 weeks. It may come across as empty, but it certainly isn't. If they're sat still, that's when you can question demand.

I've seen a lot of Flexibus vehicles with low penny numbers on board, or even nobody e.g. one weekday mid afternoon a bus pulled into Seacroft bus station and one person got off, I've seen it carry one person from a factory on Pontefract Lane around 5pm somewhere and so on. Might be popular on local facebook groups but I've yet to see a full bus, never mind 6 full buses which is what I'd be expecting for 2.3 million.

DRT services don't work like that, from bits i've read about these types of services they go off passengers per hour rather than on the bus at any one time - its just a bonus if they carry multiple people from the same A to B. Also if you have a problem with 2.3 million being spent on the West Yorkshire one i wouldn't look at how much some other areas have been awarded in DRT funding.
