What contract for the 590, 591 and 592? Services in West Yorks are on a contract to Metro and bus companies bid to run the service eg the 587 contract previously X58 was handed over to First. I don't know when the 590/591/592 contract ends put it was a possibility to predict. 590/1/2 are commercial routes, apart from possibly early morning/evening & Sunday journeys the rest are not operated under contract. Routes that are not commercially viable (like your 587/X58 example) but deemed necessary by WYMetro are put out on contract.

Well that's unfortunate then.

All tendered routes that First had passed to Centrebus around 2010 which still stands today. Some routes operated by First at the moment do have subsidies on some journeys such as late night/evening (571, 579 and similar) other than that they're all commercial.

From when i've used them First seem to operate it no worse than Transdev would. Getting back on topic,i wouldn't be too surprised if Transdev hold off on launching too many brands & refurbishments until after next year when (if) they secure the contracts longer term, the Calder Country brand does seem to have been designed so that if they lose the current routes they can still allocate the Mellors onto whatever they keep hold of or the commercial routes

But theres more than just First & Team Pennine that operate tendered routes & if First decided to bid on a price they was happy with & ended up winning,i doubt they would then turn down operating it (assuming they had the drivers),plus strengthening their network back to pre-2010 levels could only be seen as a positive for them.

Huddersfield has a higher population than Halifax, also worth noting it was the busiest bus station in all of West Yorkshire before COVID. I'm guessing they believe they'll make more money investing in Huddersfield But Bury has a smaller population than Rochdale and Bury was still the prime focus on Rosso. It had 4 brands: Irwell Line, Red4, TottingtonLine and Trax whereas Rochdale has three: Lakeline, Trax and 464. However in Bury I believe there was quite some competition whereas Rosso already had an established presence in Rochdale, possibly could be down to poorer passenger perception in Bury

First have moved away from small, tendered routes within West Yorkshire; focussing on the big bus network instead. I can't see this model changing very soon, if ever. Let's not forget that the lowest bidder is not always the winner. The operator who can introduce new or refurbished buses (depending on what the tender requirements state) and are willing to put the work in for a reasonable price are looked at favourably. I can't ever see First investing in a fleet of Stratas or Solos for small tendered work. It's just not them nowadays. Transdev or CT Plus are the only operators to realistically consider, and if Metro are happy with Transdev's current performance; they will remain.

Whilst it is unlikely First would win,the point i was trying to make is it's still a chance,so that could possibly be part of Transdevs thinking that they are holding off launching multiple brands until they gain the routes longer term (isn't that why the Bury Bolts/Rochdale Runners brands was fairly later on in the Rosso ops rebrand?) Alongside Transdev & CT Plus,i would also add TLC as a possibly, wouldn't be the first time they've swooped into a new part of W Yorks & picked up multiple contracts.

Many routes work in competition with First or other operators. Kirkheaton Quick is competition with arriva, 319 and Meltham Connection is competition with first, 360 is in competition with First to the Hospital and to Bradley.
