Bought this guide from a timetable site on the Internet for a fiver. It doesn't contain any timetables as such, just the bus number with a very basic route guide (e.g. 64 Leeds - Aberford with a line below it listing the basic areas served such as York Road, Cross Gates etc) then a very basic frequency guide such as MF 06.30 S 06.40 MF 07.30 S 07.45 08.30 then hourly til 17.30 etc.
I won't go into full detail as such as there are too many routes to mention, but some of the usual suspects that have been discussed on here in the past appeared in this guide, such as the Belle Isle/Middleton to Roundhay/Brakenwood etc routes listed as 2,3,10,19,21,22 etc etc.
Routes from Pudsey to Seacroft via Leeds back then were numbered 13/14/15 and 18 accompanied by a number 5 and 11 running from Old Farnley to Whinmoor via Leeds and Seacroft. You also had the 16 and 17 running from Farsley/Rodley to Seacroft and Barwick via Leeds as well.
Some really unusual routes existed too, now I remember in 1986 when a number 93 and 96A ran from Cross Green to Cookridge, but in 1988 this was replaced at the Cross Green end by a high frequency minibus network numbered 26, 26A and 27. The 26/A ran from Halton Moor via Cross Green to Leeds with the 27 just running Cross Green to Leeds. The combined timetable saw a bus every 5 mins on average between Cross Green and Leeds, you don't get nowhere near that frequency today lol. Halton Moor also saw a service 6 via York Road to Leeds. Now, what happened to the 93 and 96A East of Leeds is where the unusual route comes in. These routes were instead extended from Leeds to Gipton and Seacroft. Another really unusual route was the 87 and 87A running from Gipton to Wakefield via Middleton! One other unusual route to note was the CB3/5/6. These ran from Leeds via Woodhouse and Armley then the CB3 carried on to Cottingley via Wortley, the CB5 and 6 ran on to Old Farnley with the CB6 terminating at Farnley Cemetery! All ran to a combined 20 minute frequency as far as Armley with the CB5/6 running to a mostly hourly frequency to Old Farnley and at random times to Farnley Cemetery.
A couple of other noteworthy routes was a number 48 from Cottingley to Belle Isle via Beeston, and a number X85 peak hour bus from Leeds to Aberford once a day with a few short workings to/from Scholes. This was in conjunction with an 85 from Scholes via Swarcliffe and Cross Gates to Leeds.
I'll try and post more interesting notes about this guide some time soon.

My dad has a January 1988 Metro book containing every bus and rail timetable for West Yorkshire (!) I really need to get it from him. It's an enormous book that cost £1 when it was published.

I have one of those somewhere. I think Metro underestimated how quickly they'd go out of date and within months they were giving them away.

I look forward to every YR Leeds route be listed out the book and frequencies and variations. I’d love to see how the routes in 88 stack up to 2022.

Unlike some on here who have the time and want to put in the effort, sorry to disappoint but I'm really not going to go into much detail to be honest, it'll just be a brief summary with a handful of interesting highlights, but here goes.
Services 1 and 1A ran from Cottingley to Holt Park (Golden Acre Park Sun) up to every 30 mins (obviously less often eve/Sun) and combined with the 92/93/95/96 and variants to provide the main Lawnswood to Leeds services. It also combined with the 55 and 96 to provide a high frequency on the Leeds to Beeston section.
Services 2/3/4/4A and the 20/A/22/A were the main services from North Leeds through to Dewsbury Road, the 2/3/20/20A/22/22A ran from Brackenwood/Roundhay/Gledhow with the 2 continuing to Cottingley every 30 mins, the 4/4A terminating at Parkwood every half hour and the rest to Middleton, all running at high frequencies, obviously reducing eve/sun.
I've mentioned about service 5 in an above post, this combined with the 11 also mentioned above to give a reasonable frequency, and the 6 has also been mentioned in the post above. There was a service 7, which combined with a service 59 from Headingley Eden Drive via separate routes through Hyde Park and parts of Burley to Leeds. Both went on to Hunslet with the 59 via Moor Road terminating at Morrisons and the 7 via Low Road continuing to Rothwell. Both ran hourly but not at a combined frequency.
The 8 and 9 ran as full Ring Road circulars every hour taking 2 hours to do a circuit with only 6 mins recovery time including 2 mins at Otley Road junction, I remember these services being in the papers because they were so unreliable!
Services 10,19,21/A and 23/A formed the main Roundhay to Middleton/Belle Isle routes running at good combined frequencies, even eve/Sun combined frequency was quite good.
I've already mentioned about the 13 to 17 group in an above post, again combined at frequent intervals on the core route every day, but obviously places like Barwick and individual parts of Pudsey served less often. The 18 mentioned above was the Leeds to Seacroft Limewood Industrial Estate service running peak times only.
Service 24 combined with the 4/4A to give a frequent bus during the day from Beck Hill to Leeds, but via a different route and running eve/sun less often, note the 4/A finished after the PM peak.
I've already mentioned about the 26/A/27 in a post above, but one point of interest is these numbers are just one away from the Metro version of the 28 which ran Adel to Cross Green via Leeds for a long while (something like 8 years) up to deregulation day. The YR 1988 version of the 28 ran from Leeds to Adel every 30 mins and hourly eve/sun like it currently does.
There was a 33 from Primley Park to Horsforth Old Ball via Leeds, Kirkstall and central Horsforth, and a 34/35 Alwoodley to Drighlington via Leeds, New Farnley and Gildersome. Both services together with the 44 Birchwood Hill to Swinnow via Bramley and Leeds gave Scott Hall Road and surrounds a frequent service, with individual routes running at differing frequencies depending on areas served and time of day, e.g. extra buses ran on the 34/5 from Leeds to New Farnley at peak times for example.
The 38 and 39 ran from Wortley to Colton via Headingley, Meanwood, Roundhay, Oakwood/Harehills and Cross Gates roughly up to every 15 mins combined, less often eve/sun.
Service 40 ran from Pudsey to Seacroft via Stanningley, Leeds, Halton and Cross Gates and combined with the 83 Pudsey to Garforth via Stanningley, Leeds and Halton to give a good combined frequency on the common section from Pudsey to Halton.
Services 41 and 50 ran from Seacroft (town ctre 41 and Monkswood 50) via Boggart Hill, Easterley Road, Leeds and Burley Road then the 41 via Kirkstall to Bramley and 50 to Horsforth. High frequency on the combined section from Boggart Hill to Burley Road.
Services 42/A/43 ran at high frequencies from Old Farnley via Wortley, Leeds and Harehills to Gipton with the 42A continuing on slightly less often to Seacroft and 43 less often to Fearnville.
I've already mentioned the 44 above, a service 47 ran from Old Farnley to Temple Newsam roughly half hourly and less often eve/sun and as mentioned in an above post a 48 ran every hour from Cottingley via Beeston to Belle Isle during the day Mon to Sat.
Services 52/53 ran at high frequencies from Moor Allerton via Meanwood and Leeds continuing to Morley via Elland Road and combining on that section with a 52A/B to form a super high frequency from Leeds to Morley Asda. I think the 52A/B stayed on the motorway beyond junction 2 to junction 1 not serving the stretch of Elland Road round the stadium.
Service 55, mentioned as part of the 1, ran from Roundhay via Harehills and Leeds to Beeston terminus roughly half hourly with extras, a rather unusual link bearing in mind all other cross city links from Roundhay via Leeds have been and still are those to Middleton via Dewsbury Road or Belle Isle.
Services 56 and 57 ran at good combined frequencies from Swarcliffe to Ireland Wood/Tinshill via Cross Gates, Leeds, and Hyde Park/Headingley a bit like the current services do today give or take slight route variations. The 58 and 60 served Hyde Park from Leeds on a circular basis (one way each service) via Burley/Woodhouse with common sections giving a good frequency to Leeds when combined with with services 7, 52/3, 56, 57, 59, 61 and 62.
Services 61 and 62 ran from Leeds via East End Park, Harehills (Compton), Chapletown and Woodhouse back to Leeds, 61 one way, 62 the other at good frequencies. Services 63/A ran from Leeds via Richmond Hill, East End Park and Halton to Cross Gates at very high intervals.
The 64 ran like it does today from Leeds via Cross Gates to Aberford, but hourly with peak extras. Two additional services combined with the 64 to give a reasonable frequency between Leeds and Cross Gates, these being the 65 and 85 Leeds to Scholes via Cross Gates, Swarcliffe (85) and Pendas Fields (65). Additionally, a service X85 ran from Leeds to Scholes and Aberford at peak times but not often. Short workings from Leeds to Killingbeck Hospital for visitors were numbered 64A. There was also a 67 which ran via the 64 route and extended from Aberford to Lotherton Hall on a Sunday a handful of times.
Rest to follow.

Next lot, and hopefully the last lol
Service 68 ran from Leeds to Cardinal Estate in Beeston via Tempest Road between 9am and 4pm every 15 mins Mon to Sat, I presume this served Dewsbury Road then Tempest Road, Beeston Road and Old Lane or could have done Beeston Hill, Tempest Road and Dewsbury Road to Cardinal Estate, it's not that clear in the basic route description which only lists those main points listed above.
Services 71 and 72 were the main services between Leeds and Bradford, together with the limited stop X6. Service 71 ran from Leeds via Kirkstall, Farsley, Thornbury and Leeds Old Road to Bradford, and the 72 ran via it's current route (Armley, Stanningley etc) to Bradford. Both the 71 and 72 ran often during the day with peak extras and reduced eve/sun frequency. Unusually, there was a 72A as well which ran from Calverley via Woodhall Road then the 72 route to Leeds, not serving Pudsey. This ran a handful of times at peak times only Mon to Fri. I'm not sure which bus ran from Pudsey to Calverley but I suspect another operator had the contract for the 66 Leeds, Leysholme, Pudsey, Calverley and Greengates service, as this isn't listed in this guide, but was around in the 80s. The X6 ran limited stop from Leeds via it's old route (Stanningley Road, By Pass, Thornbury etc) to Bradford then on to Brighouse and Huddersfield every 30 mins Mon to Sat daytime.
Service 73, which had ran for a good number of years up until the 90s and maybe early 2000s, ran from Moor Grange via Kirkstall and Bramley to Greenthorpe every hour Mon to Sun from early until late, probably at the same times it ran in previous years. At some point in the 90s, I do remember this being reduced to an evening service only before it's final withdrawl.
The 74, 75, 76 and 77 all ran from Middleton via Beeston or Belle Isle depending on number to Leeds, then all via Burley Road, Headingley, Queenswood Drive, then to Moor Grange or Horsforth depending on number. These ran fairly often Mon to Sat with reduced frequency eve/sun.
See the 40 for the 83 listing, and see a post above for the 87 and 87A listings. Just to add the 87 and 87A ran roughly half hourly Mon to Sun Gipton to Middleton and hourly on to Wakefield with short peak workings, and amended eve/sun curtailed workings. Number 87A was used for Gipton to Middleton and 87 Gipton to Wakefield. A most unusual and random connection to say the least lol.
Service 93 (plus a peak express X93 version Cookridge to Leeds), as mentioned previously, ran from Cookridge to Seacroft via Headingley, Leeds and Gipton, again another proper random unusual route. This ran ferquently from Cookridge to Leeds and half hourly to Seacroft Mon to Sat day, hourly eve/sun but combined eve/sun with the 96A to form a half hourly service from Cookridge to Gipton.
Services 92 and 95 were services aimed at the student market running from Lawnswood (92 only) Headingley (both) to the University. The 92 then ran on to Leeds. Both ran frequently with the 92 running off peak and the 95 running peak only.
Services 98 and 99 were local services serving Whinmoor, Red Hall, Seacroft estates and Halton Moor running 2 hourly each, hourly combined on common sections, off peak only.
Services 291 to 294 were also local services serving Moor Allerton, Roundhay, Brackenwood and Birchwood Hill running hourly each during the day including at peak times.
The CB3 to 6 have been mentioned in a post above, Leeds also had an extensive night bus network listed serving all main areas of Leeds and out to Morley and Rothwell, however like all the others in this book, the unhelpful basic route descriptions didn't really state what routes these services took.
Some YR express services ran in 1988 as well, these being an X2 from Leeds to Garforth peak times only, the X6 as already mentioned, an X10 from Leeds to Middleton and East Ardsley peak times only, X11 from Leeds to Pudsey and X85 Leeds to Scholes.
I'll have a look again at the guide and will list any I've missed below but I think that's all of them.

There are a handful of odds and sods I've missed off, forgot about the Troydale/Pudsey to Bradford services, which were numbered 603 (one journey only) and 610 to 613. Buses ran quite often (roughly every 15 mins combined Mon to Sat daytime and less often eve/sun) between Pudsey and Bradford with buses continuing to Queensbury (Hungerhill) or Buttershaw. The interesting thing about the Bradford group of services is that these pages listed how long buses took between main points, unlike the rest which didn't.
There was also the 508 from Leeds to Halifax which ran mostly half hourly daytime and hourly eve/sun following it's old route via Stanningley. A surprise one was the 767 which ran from Leeds to Shadwell via Harrogate Road, mostly half hourly with extras. This route was always a West Yorkshire route so maybe it was tendered? YR didn't fully take West Yorkshire over until 1990, with talks only really starting something like a couple of years earlier, so I can't see it being due to the takeover. Finally an X56 ran from Whinmoor via Cross Gates to Leeds every 20 mins peak times, and hourly off peak as well as Saturday daytime.
As a side note, one thing I noticed was the lack of direct bus from East End Park/Richmond Hill to Hunslet Morrisons. This used to always be in the hands of the 61 and 62 in WYPTE days, but it appears these services were routed directly via East Street to Leeds in 1988, with no mention of any other service. I know of a number CB2 which YR did run in the mid 80s, and Amberley Travel also ran a CB2 to a different route between these areas, however I'm sure this was later on some time in the 90s.

From memory of the later 1990s it then only ran as a tendered service on Sunday with the Monday to Saturday service coming from First once they took over Black Prince's routes as the 46 (later 64, now 65) via Holbeck. The Leeds-Dewsbury Road-Tempest Road-Beeston Road section of the 68 was then covered by First's 44 which then ran via Wesley Road, Elland Road and Cottingley to White Rose.

To fill in a little more detail, I distinctly remember getting a First-operated 68 to White Rose on a Friday in December 1997 (I have a weird memory for things like that). I think it was withdrawn soon after that.

Did AJC coaches become Ambermile as I remembered they ran the 68 in the 90’s. The route was Leeds Vicar Lane, Swinegate ,Neville Street, same routing as the 1 to top of Beeston Road. Then old Lane. Terminates at Cardinal Estate. It got the White Rose Extension when it became a Sundays only route ( for many years into the millennium. The old 46 did all the day work then. I don’t when the 68 stopped running. Unless it was when the 64 was routed to Gildersome.

Then it turned right up Barkly Road then left on Oakhurst Mount to Old Lane, left to Cardinal Road to Cardinal Walk and then looped round Cardinal Square!!! (phew). I worked for Yorkshire Rider on the minis from 1987.

1988 would have been a significant year as that was the year Yorkshire Rider was privatised. It was of course the first PTC to be privatised and IIRC the largest single company privatisation so far at the time.
Then in 1989 Yorkshire Rider bought some former NBC/AJS services prior to the remaining AJS services becoming Blazefield and later selling out to Transdev.

The “new” West Yorkshire Road Car Company became part of AJS group in 1987.
Then in August 1989, West Yorkshire’s Leeds and Bradford depots passed to the Rider Group (then owners of Yorkshire Rider), with most routes merged into the Yorkshire Rider set-up and running out of the latter’s garages. Some of the services were altered so they only ran out of one garage, such as 670 from Bradford and 755 from Leeds.
WYRCC Keighley depot became Keighley and District Travel Limited, with the Harrogate depot also having its own identity. These became part of Blazefield in 1991, and of course Transdev in 2006.

Did Giles Fearnley and Stuart Wilde stay as managers when Transdev bought them or did they sell up and move on to First (well Giles anyway)? If so, who was CEO before Alex Hornby?

Thank you for your extra clarity surrounding the 1989 sale. I wonder which current First Leeds or Bradford routes are therefore successors to West Yorkshire Road Car?

Not that many survive in complete form nowadays, if any for that matter. The only one I can think of from Leeds that hasn't changed, or changed much, is the former 735/6 which has become service 34 over time. The X84 (WYRCC ran this as 783, 784, X84) has altered significantly several times over to become what it is today, a Leeds to Ilkley service only. The former 733/4 has shrunk significantly to become todays 33 to Guiseley with that even altered to serve Otley evenings and Sundays. In the Bradford area, it's even worse. Many of the former WYRCC services to Baildon via Shipley have either vanished, gone to other companies, or have become so altered they no longer reflect the routes they used to run. As for WYRCC services from Bradford to Otley, Harrogate and Ilkley via Guiseley, as many will know these have vanished with other companies taking on sections such as Connexions between Otley and Harrogate, and Transdev from Bradford to Guiseley.

There have been MANY. route changes since 1988, so it's hard to get a complete list. West Yorkshire routes in Leeds were mainly in the 7xx series, but have been renumbered since.
755 is now First 27 for example, also Wetherby via Oakwood.
In Bradford, routes were numbered alongside ex-Corporation routes in the 6xx series.
Baildon routes 659–660 ( now TLC) Baildon 661 (now 626) Bolton Woods routes 675/677 (now TLC) Coach Road (now TLC) Cottingley (now 615/680) Eldwick and Wilsden (both now 616)

I think the basic route from Wetherby to Leeds remains the same as it was in WYRCC days, as in Leeds, Collingham, Wetherby via the main road and Leeds, East Keswick, Linton Wetherby.

Thank you for your responses. I can now tell that it is in a nutshell several routes serving Otley or Shipley that have migrated from WYRC to YR and therefore First.

AJC Coaches t/a ran the 68 and around that time they sold their routes to Yorkshire Rider in exchange for the GoldRider Unit. Did AJC coaches become Ambermile as I remembered they ran the 68 in the 90’s. They were renamed and traded under AngloBlue using the same livery as AJC The route was Leeds Vicar Lane, Swinegate ,Neville Street, same routing as the 1 to top of Beeston Road. Then old Lane. Terminates at Cardinal Estate. It got the White Rose Extension when it became a Sundays only route ( for many years into the millennium. The old 46 did all the day work then. I don’t when the 68 stopped running. Unless it was when the 64 was routed to Gildersome.

Thank you for your responses. I can now tell that it is in a nutshell several routes serving Otley or Shipley that have migrated from WYRC to YR and therefore First. In August 1989 Yorkshire Rider bought the actual West Yorkshire Road Car Company, so AJS had to rename the ex WYRCC ops they were retaining, there were a few tweaks as WYRCC sensibly operated services from both ends of the route, therefore Bradford depot could no longer operate journeys on the 66X Bradford to Keighley via Saltaire route, just as the Skipton outstation of Keighley depot could no longer operate journeys on the 784 / X84 from Skipton to Leeds. Between August 1989 and April 1990 the WYRCC routes and depots (Bradford (Hammerton Street), Leeds (Roseville Road) & Otley) continued virtually unchanged. However on 1st April 1990 the final demise of WYRCC occurred, as the WYRCC operations were fully absorbed into the Yorkshire Rider operation, the 3 WYRCC depots and Leeds Vicar Lane Bus Station closed. There were many service changes and that was when most of the ex WYRCC routes lost their identity.
