Can anyone remember back in the very early 80's a National Express service, 281 I think, that crossed over the Pennines? I remember getting it with my mum from Bradford to Colne. I think it went to Blackpool but not sure.

Mid 80s route altered to run via Calder Valley towns, then via Accrington etc. I think this variation ran through from the Sheffield Interchange (this was a bus garage just outside Sheffield where many routes departed at 15:00, not the bus station opposite Sheffield Midland).

I might be wrong, but I think when I started at Blackpool Transport in 1996, the 281 still ran, and did indeed go to Sheffield in about 6 hours. What I do know is that although the NE service dropped me in the bus Station, I decided that although it was dearer by train, the 1 hour 20 mins on the train, meant I was back home with my wife and kids, eaten my tea/dinner, read the paper, put my clothes in the washer, probably dried them as well before the NE had arrived in Halifax!! Plus I hadn't died of boredom or travel sickness. Yes, I know, a bus driver of 42 years that has travel sickness on a bus as a passenger, takes some believing!!!
