Well, ok, not a Tornado blowing down from Scotland, but it's been announced that the Flying Scotsman is to be the very first train to run on the Settle - Carlisle line when it opens at the end of March. Now I'm not sure if this will run from Leeds, however it is to be stabled on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, and I believe may be used on the KWVR line in early April as well. A second announcement, almost just as big, is that the A1 Locomotive, Tornado, will be replacing some DMU runs on the Settle Carlisle line from 14th to 16th Feb inclusive. Normal fares will apply on Tornado steam runs on all 3 days including the £15 day ranger ticket! Spread the word, phone in sick, let's fill these trains!

Scotsman's run at end of March, up the Settle - Carlisle line, isn't calling at Leeds, it's starting from Oxenhope, then Keighley and Skipton,£220 a ticket. Now...........the Tornado runs, as proper timetabled departures, sound good and I need to check my work commitments.

Thanks for the more accurate info, I've amended the original post as I originally was told the Scotsman will charge normal fares, clearly that's not the case lol although having read the KWVR site, normal ish fares will be charged for it's KWVR runs at £20 for a one way trip, this also being valid on all normal KWVR timetabled trains all day.

According to the Rail Magazine website the only times for Tornado are 1045 Skipton northbound and 1507 Appleby southbound with mention of supplementary earlier and later journeys. It mentions that these journeys will replace DMU's.
Looking at both the National Rail app and Northerns own website it would appear that both journeys mentioned above are additional services unless both searches are returning incorrect data.

Noticed that too from the link on the Settle Carlisle website but assumed it was an error unless they are planning to re-time trains for those days. Although they probably haven't confirmed all details, it would be handy for the public to know if trains are to be re-timed as bearing in mind the timetable is set until May, some people may have already planned journeys well in advance for various reasons, e.g. to go walking.
EDIT - Just checked on the Rail Magazine website for any links to see if I could get any more info and I've just spotted a story about draft times for the Tornado so it seems the times for trains that day will be extensively revised. The draft times state all Tornado runs will be between Skipton and Appleby only. Tornado will have it's first run at 08.30 from Appleby to Skipton. The 09.47 from Leeds will still be DMU operated but to Skipton only where it will connect with Tornado which departs Skipton at 10.45 calling at Settle, Kirkby Stephen and terminating at Appleby. Another Appleby to Skipton Tornado train will run at 15.07 and finally it's last departure will be at 17.10 from Skipton to Appleby.
I'm now beginning to wonder if the £15 day ranger ticket will still be valid!

The journey from Skipton is 20 minutes later than the currently advertised departure. This 20 minute delay could be written into the timetable to take into account the "hoards" getting off the connecting Leeds-Skipton dmu then wanting a photo or two of the engine before boarding the train to continue onwards to Appleby. However I can't work out if that works on the return journey unless it is to allow for another 20 minutes of "goodbyes" at Skipton before joining the Leeds body dmu.

Details on ticketing are still to be released but reservations whichever way they decide will be essential
