No it's an improvement on the section between Dewsbury and Wakefield, just where and when Arron/Station will be in competition. But, they are only running 126 Ossett-Wakefield, so, only compete between bus station and St Michaels church, they're not doing 278 Wishful thinking or not on my part then............................

Always wondered why the 268 from Bradford to Cleckheaton is every 10 minutes, there sometimes is a handful on those services, does get busier south of Cleckheaton.

Sorry to see the through 502 service ending. I hope another company has picked up the Sunday journeys from First.
I wonder what the changes to 521/522/523 will be this time? Loadings on the later 522/523 don't appear to have been that good but I hope they aren't being cut back.

Still seems bizarre to decrease a frequency in buses when patronage is at its highest. It isn't uncommon. Arriva, Connexions and First already do this to some extent, and almost certainly other operators as well. Because peak times are when traffic is heaviest, so a journey that takes 1 hour off-peak might take 75 minutes at peak time. To maintain the same frequency therefore means putting on more buses and more drivers for a short period in the morning and in the evening, and it might not make economic sense to have those surplus vehicles and extra drivers when they are then idle for most of the day. And then factor in that some operators will also be running school contracts at peak times (particularly the morning peak, the evening load is spread slightly better), so they may have fewer vehicles and drivers available in the morning peak, making it even more difficult to maintain the same frequency.

I'm surprised Transdev Keighley haven't picked up the 502 from Keighley end and operate to Halifax. The same way they acquired the 500 to Hebden Bridge from First. It's quite a long standing route,what ever happened to the 502's potential it ran Keighley-Halifax-Huddersfield in the rider days of the 90's. Seemed like a flagship route.

I think the heavy competition Halifax to Illingworth meant it wasn't get much custom locally within Halifax. Then at the Keighley end First were not the network operator so passengers might not catch plus it probably ran just behind a frequent KDT bus from Cross Roads into Keighley.
That only left through passengers and there were presumably not enough to make it viable.

Well, it wouldn't be quite the same as the 500 was a contract that Transdev won, so they knew they were getting paid, whilst the 502 is entirely commercial. It is a shame the 502 has gone. I used to catch it regularly in the late 90s and it seemed to get decent loadings (including the 2220 from Keighley to Halifax which should have just missed the last 560 but usually didn't). It was hourly all day except Sunday evenings when it gave up just after 6 - it even had peak extras immediately before being completely withdrawn on weekdays.

And lets not forget crucially where the 500 is concerned K&D incorporated their existing (very busy) route to Haworth/Oxenhope into the route making it miles more viable than it ever was to First whose journeys were over and above the existing network, in fact as far as im aware daytime workings to Haworth at least are commercial. Regarding 502 I agree very sad more History down the pan! but First have done this not just because of poor passenger numbers, as their are introducing 522/3 Illingworth journeys on Sunday. My personal opinion regarding demise of the 502 is breaking the link through to Huddersfield was a bad commercial decision but competition from TJ Walsh And TRANSDEV retiming their 696/7 just in front of the 502 was the death knell that finished it off. A lesson of history as to the failings of the Deregulated system, under a Regulated system would this have happened ? I think not.
Of course the PTE might yet ride to rescue, courtesy of Yorkshire Tiger ,TLC or even Transdev Keighley ! The cheapest option open to the PTE could be to extend the 4 Sunday Yorkshire Tiger 526 journeys to Bradshaw Church on to Denholme where connections with the 696/7 service could be made!

When I moved to north Halifax in the mid 90's, I could easily get to Bradford, Keighley or Huddersfield without changing buses. But as operators became more 'localised' they got cut back to next to nothing. With a little imagination some 607s could easily be extended past Thornton back into Halifax to restore a through service replacing some of the 522s which do a direct route up and down Keighley Road.

At one point, Keighley to Bradford hourly Monday to Saturday and two - hourly Sunday daytime. So the 502 slotted nicely between. The 503 (Bradford ) also had a similar history. Of course I have suggestions for these routes and I'll get to put them into another section sometime.

Wonder what the TLC changes and introduction of service 655 are about? 655 will be part of the 656-659 'family ' but it looks like there could be a new connecting bus from Wharf edale trains at Baildon. Something that has been talked about. The current 656 and other routes have never been advised as connections or indeed at a suitable time.

Last time we saw a 655 (woth 755) was in Yorkshire Rider days which became the 97. Did the current route but carried on to serve Bradford. Nice scenic route if u wanted to spend a day getting from one end to the other!
