A public inquiry into plans for a £15.9m pedestrian entrance at Leeds railway station is under way. The proposed entrance, to the south of the station next to the river Aire, will give direct access to and from the Leeds waterfront area. A bit more detail on the Metro site: wymetro.com/news/LSSE_open/20,000 passengers a day hopefully that should take some pressure from the main entrance which is always like rugby scrum when ever I use it Leeds Station’s eye-catching new southern entrance is now open providing passengers with direct access to the south of the city. With escalators, lifts and stairs, the new entrance provides step-free access from the station’s footbridge to Granary Wharf, Little Neville Street and Dark Neville Street. The widened bridge over platforms 15, 16, and 17 provides an upper concourse with customer information screens, ticket vending machines and automated ticket barriers. Up to 20,000 passengers – one fifth of the station’s daily users - are expected to use the new entrance, which will save them up to an hour each week as they travel to the fast-expanding south of the city centre. This will also help to relieve congestion at the existing tickets gates. Leeds Station Southern Entrance is a joint project between West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Leeds City Council, the Department for Transport and Network Rail. The £20m scheme has secured £12.4m from DfT as well as funding from West Yorkshire's Local Transport Plan, Network Rail and Leeds City Council. Well I now know the REAL reason why this entrance was built, the steps on Bishopsgate Street, which are really handy if you need the ticket office as well as trains on platforms nearest the concourse area where shops and cash machines are, these steps are soon to be closed, WHY! It takes a good 2 to 3 mins extra to go up to the concourse via the roads, not great if you only have 10 mins to negotiate the ticket office and need something to eat on the go before catching your train on a far platform, e.g 1a. The new entrance has no ticket office, no cash machine and is very sparse of cheap food to go supermarkets like Sainsburys, don't want to pay a house price for a pasty that's probably lost it's nutrition content having been sent by frozen delivery from Cornwall. Having this middle short cut even though it's old does have good advantages

Leeds Rail Station’s newly-opened Southern Entrance has won an 'ICE' Yorkshire and Humber Civil Engineering Award. The ICE Yorkshire and Humber Civil Engineering Awards recognise excellent and imaginative concepts in civil engineering practice across the Yorkshire and Humber region and the Centenary award is for projects £5m and over. Welcoming the news, West Yorkshire Combined Authority Chair Cllr Peter Box said:“This Centenary Award from the Institution of Civil Engineers is recognition of the excellent work by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority team and those of our partners Leeds City Council, Network Rail and the DfT to overcome the considerable challenges presented by building the impressive structure over the River Aire. “Leeds Station Southern Entrance is now providing the growing numbers of commuters who work in the growing south of city centre with direct access to Granary Wharf and beyond. It is saving them up to 50 minutes on their weekly commute and will also relieve congestion at the existing tickets gates. “Up to one fifth of the station’s 100,000 daily users are expected to benefit from the new £20m entrance.
