Arriva welcomes launch of innovative bus registration scheme
1 February 2008
Leading European passenger transport group Arriva has welcomed the public launch of an online system which will streamline the registration of new bus services and is set to deliver better information for local authorities, passengers and bus operators.
The new Electronic Bus Service Registration (EBSR) system which will mean faster and more accurate travel information for bus users was launched yesterday by Secretary of State for Transport, Ruth Kelly.
Arriva has been involved in developing the system from the outset, and began piloting the pioneering EBSR technology at its Arriva Scotland West bus operation, in conjunction with the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA), almost two years ago. The pilot saw Arriva complete one of the first ever electronic bus service registrations back in August of last year.
EBSR enables bus operators to submit bus service registration applications to Traffic Commissioners online, rather than via the current paper-based approach, which saves time and reduces data inconsistencies.
The new service will not only transform the way bus service route and timetable data is passed between operators, VOSA and transport authorities, it will also improve the data collection for services such as Traveline, Transport Direct or other online providers that members of the public use to plan their journeys. EBSR will ensure that websites such as Transport Direct and Traveline are giving the most precise information possible. Meaning passengers can access timely and relevant timetable information on paper, by text message and online.
Arriva plans to extend the roll-out of the technology to its Yorkshire operations later this year.
Mike Cooper, managing director of Arriva's UK Regions, said: “It was a very rewarding moment when our first electronic bus registration was accepted online, thanks to several years of hard work and dedication from numerous parties involved in this innovative project. Information technology can play a key role in fulfilling the industry’s aspiration to increase bus passenger usage and will contribute towards shaping the future of bus travel.
“Arriva has played an active role throughout much of the pioneering development of TransXChange and we look forward to supporting the roll-out of the project. We hope the official launch will give the scheme extra momentum delivering benefits to bus operators and passengers.”
