For my first posting I wish to inform you that this operator is increasing its fares from Saturday 8th December 2007, although I do not know what the new rates will be.
Until recent times Arriva produced a leaflet informing passengers (sorry, they like to call us customers don't they!) of forthcoming changes, but now we get a sticker in the windscreen of the bus on the day the change occurs. I understand the company cites fuel charge increases as the reason. When will other companies follow suit - or may be they are doing so at the same time?
Now a change from that and to new vehicles. From what I can gather not all the new Volvo B9TL/Darwenbus Olympuses for service 110 will be in service until February 2008! Gives Arriva plenty of time to complete the ad-blue tank for them doesn't it?

So the prices on www.your110.com will be incorrect already for single fare journeys. I wonder if the day ticket prices will go up as well?

wasnt it january or similar when they scrapped off peak fares, so some journeys fares increased by 40p and they increase the fares again now.
If this is case i wonder how long it will be that fares will be £2.50 then £3 singles.

Its one thing to have previously scrapped off peak fares and to put fares up well over inflation but another thing not to inform people before the day of fare changes. Yes I know shops don't announce price changes beforehand, but passengers who need to get places and only have the exact change could do with a little advance notice. Without wishing to sound too much like an uneducated tabloid columnist, Arriva Yorkshire's whole operation really is nothing short of a complete shambles.

I used to have to put up with Arriva until I bought a car. How much is a fare now? A single must be approaching the cost of their all day ticket. I remember when the maximum off peak was only 50p (back when the Leyland Lynx was king) - if fares are now £2.50 single (at a guess), that's a 500% rise in the space of 10-15 years.

Do you remember the little coloured stickers in the first nearside window which advertised the maximum off peak fare, and changed colour with each fare change? I'm sure I can remember when it was changed from 50p to 52p, now we could only dream of such small fare rises let alone still having off peak fares at all!
They've gone from 50p tickets for a ride on a fast Lynx to probably £2 or upwards on a dreadfully slow DAF! You can't say its not progress...

I think Arriva have messed up big time in the North East. Arriva North West & Wales seems to run better. Unless that goes downhill under the management of Phil Stone.
They have plenty of new buses (well recently) and tickets seem more value for money. A weekly ticket for the whole of their operation is less than the West Yorkshire weekly!

Ouch, the Day Ticket has gone up to £3.80! And singles have gone up 20p for Adults.
Some sample Adult fares from 110 website: Wakefield – Leeds - £2.30 (I'm sure that was £1.90 before!) Lofthouse – Leeds - £2.10 (Previously £1.90) Outwood – Leeds - £2.10 (Previously £1.90) Sandal – Wakefield - £1.40

Does anyone have knowledge of Arriva's fare scales now. Is the lower £1.40 fare an increase or unchanged? £3.80 is almost passable for a peak day ticket, but after 9.30am this really should at least be reduced to £3.

Arriva used to offer off-peak Day Tickets for Leeds, Kirklees and Wakefield districts but they scrapped them.

Arriva used to offer off peak fares but decided to scrap those! I get the distinct impression that they just don't like the word "off" coupled with the word "peak".

I wonder if they will get an MD for Yorkshire, must be a few months since Phil Stone went to the wrong side of the Pennines.

I remember the pink 50p (in the shape of a 50 pence piece) when they went up tuppence from 48p. I also remember the increase to 52p - must have been fun giving change for that (plus the 26p half fare), along with the slogan "Still the cheapest fares in West Yorkshire".They can't really say that any more with an approaching £3 single. And then they wonder why people are not using the bus. Arriva are a terrible transport provider and they can get away with it because there is little or no competition on any of their routes. I also found this information.... www.wypta.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/1742B504-312C-4A32-A7E0-2C17A562C99B/0/TSWG4DECEMBER2007ITEM5.pdfArriva are getting almost £1.8m a year in subsidies to run services in Kirklees. Service 256 alone nets Arriva £120k in subsidies - surely they shouldn't be able to get this much money to run a service using 15 year old buses?

They shouldn't be able to, but with no other companies competing, Metro is under obligation to pay whatever they desire - and they know it!
Perhaps if tenders were agreed on a route-by-route basis instead of in huge area batches we wouldn't only have one company bidding.

Perhaps if tenders were agreed on a route-by-route basis instead of in huge area batches we wouldn't only have one company bidding. They do allow smaller companies to bid but then Arriva (or First in their area) offer to do the whole batch for cheaper than the overall cost of the parts In the case of the North Kirklees tenders nobody else at all bidded for any work

It is unfortunate that the bigger operators like Arriva and First can muscle in and win on what appears to be their terms. To me it is rather like being anti-competitive, but legally (but not morally).
I don't like Arriva (but I have to live with the firm as local operator) and wish another outfit would come in and make them take notice. I had hoped that Stagecoach might, but that company flattered to deceive and has just about withered in North Kirklees.

I too had hopes for competition from Stagecoach and initially there was a bit on the Leeds to Huddersfield via Dewsbury route with the X61 and X62 but these have all now been withdrawn. The only other competition in the area is Longstaff, but they only operate an hourly service on a small route. At one point K-Line/Taylors/Wakefield City Bus (same co different name I believe) competed in Dewsbury on the 126,214,274 and 281 but they were bought out by Arriva.
As said above, with no competition fares have rocketed, tender prices have risen and service levels have reduced in most areas. I really hate Arriva as a company - they treat their passenegers badly and provide an expensive, unreliable and generally terrible service in North Kirklees.

So is 80p the mimimum Adult single then on Arriva services? Is £2.30 the Max fare possible on all routes within West Yorkshire?

|
|
Post by Craig on Dec 13, 2007 22:24:36 GMT 1
That minimum fare will be right, the minimum on First is 70p these days - and that one fare stage doesn't get you very far either!

Along with the increase of the West Yorkshire day ticket to £3.80, the weekly ticket is now £15 and the 4-weekly ticket is £56. However all of these are now also valid for use in South Yorkshire. The whole of Yorkshire day ticket is now £5.70.
