The Association of Train Operating Companies have come up with a proposal to electrify upto 400 miles of railway lines, including two in West Yorkshire. They say that ditching diesel trains and electrifying the routes would slash journey times, reduce overcrowding and cut carbon emissions. Lines from Leeds to Manchester Piccadilly via Huddersfield and Stalybridge and Leeds to York would be electrified along with the following: *Liverpool to Manchester Piccadilly via Warrington Central *St Helens to Wigan *Preston to Manchester via Bolton *Crewe to Chester *Basingstoke / Reading to Birmingham via Oxford and Leamington / Coventry *Birmingham to Bristol via Cheltenham (including Gloucester) *Ipswich to Felixstowe *Swindon to Cheltenham Should these get approved, it would add to the decision to electrify the Great Western main line and the Liverpool-Manchester Victoria via Huyton and Eccles line, and would be completed by 2024 (or more likely later). www.wymetro.com/news/releases/ATOCresponse.htmwww.atoc-comms.org/dynamic/atoc-press-story/997937/Electrify-more-train-lines-between-cities-to-cut-carbon-and-congestion
