i am quite surprised nobodys mentioned the passing of hudds last plaxton verde bodied dennis lances. For many years these were the backbone of the hudds fleet at one time numbering around 55 in total. they operated on virtually every route in hudds and up until a couple of years back any visitor to hudds bus.stn would probably have seen most first services run by this bus. Admittedly they were not universally popular, as D.stazinger says on his fotopic site"a good idea, that never quite worked". however my personal feeling is these buses were every bit as iconic to us hudds folk as the striders were to leeds/halifax folk. shame 60939(4001)M401 VWW couldnt have been preserved. feel free to agree/disagree.

Indeed 60939 at least should have been preserved. I've grown up travelling on these buses back in the days when they were in their original green livery.

I didn't like them, they were too common and no character; if there was ever one on the 343/539/538 etc. I would have waited for a better bus to turn up e.g. Citybus, Royale, Dart.

Several of them had character, i remember 4007 (60945) used to by noisy, clunk whine etc until it got a new gearbox. I agree, better than catching a wright-heap-of-crap. If low floor had been about 20 years ago they would be still here i'm sure!

Leeds had a few, mostly at Cherry row and predominately on the 2/12/3/13 routes (when they were red, yellow, blue and green lines) along with Leylands and what ever else was lying around CRG garage.
I never like them, thought they were the ugly. Did kirkstall have any? I ask this because they used to at times pop up on the 93/96 routes along with the 28 (when that used to go up and around the ring road to Adel, while the 97 to bodington hall served Weetwood Lane).

I agree with the original poster. I was a fan of them and it's a shame one hasn't been preserved into 'Rider Huddersfield' livery
When new they seemed really modern as along with the livery, the Huddersfield fleet at that time was very old. Of course during the middle few years they became boring as there were so many of them, I feel they lost their character and original purpose when they were painted into barbie.
I also was a fan of the Volvo B10M/Plaxton Derwents that Huddersfield had. They really were a bit quirky and out of the ordinary

I had almost forgotten the B10M/Derwents. didnt YR have about 12 of these, 6 based at hudds&6 based at hfx. eventually all being based at hudds. The one thing i do remember about these,is the seats were bloody awful even a short hop from cowlersley to hudds could give you backache. still, they had character which is whats lacking in a lot of new buses these days.

It was 10, 5 each at HX & HD originally. Bradford didn't have any, in fact I don't think Bradford operated any bus seated single deckers at all until the B10BLEs

An excellent topic! I too was sad to see them go almost unoticed although I believe there are still a fair number at Bristol, I did see N478 JUG still in service (a Leeds based example I know) down there on the 8th August. For me the highlight of their career was when 4001-4021 got done up into Premier livery-with the really stylish and cool seating moquette and the livery with the viynl ribbon down the side. It was always a bonus getting these examples, and I believe darts 40872 and 40873 also have it to replace their original grey and coloured seating moquette when they first came to Yorkshire. My best memories have to be of 4009 on the M1 when it decided to overheat and we had to sit in the hard shoulder for 15 minutes, or perhaps the more magnificent and storming return run we had on 4007 on the return leg! Wish I'd done a full 365 journey on one! My last premier lance was 4021 (60959) sometime last year, before that it was 4006 before it got converted into a driver trainer, and my last ever Hudds based lance run was on 60967 on the 343. I do miss them, I loved their sound and thought they looked modern and stylish, but in their later years they were allowed to be run down a bit! It was a rarity to have a lance which didn't have the front cupboard by the doors held shut by firstweek tickets, which amongst other things also got used with running boards to make a temporary route number display, hold strider destination displays shut and also hold closed the bins on the doorwell on many a bus!
The derwent B10M's also provide happy memories, these too got upgraded from YR seating moquette to the same style as the low floor scanias on the 363 used to have (grey with red and yellow dots), and 1460 also received premier moquette too! Also had some storming runs out of these on the M1, and I distinctly remember a very similar looking cousin of them in allover plain green (1595?-honestly haven't a clue!) making common appearances on the 548 for about a month one year!
Those were the days, never mind Dart, eclipse, eclipse, gemini, dart! Not much worth seeing nowadays!
