GMPTA have called on the government to introduce a country-wide flat rate of 50p for children travelling on buses. They feel that it help families with costs, given that some areas, such as West Yorkshire, charge half the adult fare for journeys. It also comes as GMPTA could be forced to increase their price for child fares from 70p to 80p, the first rise for two years. www.gmpte.com/news.cfm?news_id=6111047

It would be interesting to see how whether the Government approves GMPTA's idea. Would operators be faced with taking a 50p fare with no reimbursement from local authorities or a very low percentage of reimbursement compared to the adult fare.
Would it mean a roll out of a standard pass like with the OAP/Disabled scheme and would it be all under 16s as it can varies from area to area on how old someone has to be to qualify for child fares.
Either way it could turn out to be a bad move for the industry. Operators will rise adult fares to recover lost revenue from such a scheme. Whilst youth will travel the bus for the sake of it and could cause an increase in anti social behaviour on buses which would mean fare paying passengers would want to make alternative travel arrangements.
Sounds like a bad idea to me!

(Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority - new name for GMPTA) Interesting you mentioned that, all the Passenger Transport Authorities have become integrated transport authorities this week. It is a result of the Local Transport Act which gives ITAs more power in the form of Quality Contracts etc!
