The trains should start to enter service next week at the earliest once the new Winter timetable starts and will be used on the Manchester Victoria-Blackpool service.

All 3 are now at Newton Heath.
The first, 180103, went to Blackpool Carriage Sidings for training, including runs to Wigan and back, cos apparently, the drivers have to be trained at 100mph before the units can be used in service.
Mind you, from all the reports and sightings i've read, it was failed at Blackpool for a few days with low batteries or something, and then when it did start the test runs, nobody seems to have mentioned whether it was doing 100mph on the WCML or not.
Personally, i'm gald they are on the other side of the peninnes. I'd rather have a 158 any day!
PS: Just heard Hull Trains had 180104 on an emergency loan after 1 of the 3 Class 222's and ALL THREE of their 180's failed!

Yes you heard right hull trains to indeed have 180104 and a UID TPX Class 170 on emergency loan until the problems are resolved. The 180s are not the best of units i must say but they have some power in them

If the 3 Northern 180's are like HT's 3 they can stay other side of the pennines, shame really as i looked forward to them coming up here

Nice looking trains, yet a bit poor performance-wise.

Dont Transpennine Express have a Manchester to Blackpool service, only difference it runs from piccadilly. Was this to set up competition with Transpennine, or are these trains runnin to Blackpool via the south (Lytham, St Annes) instead of runnin via Poulton Le Fylde.

Northern have had a Manchester to Blackpool service for a while. Except it was Buxton to Blackpool North before last December via Manchester Piccadilly. The service was broken up into two sections in December and the Blackpool end going to Victoria and a Manchester Piccadilly to Buxton service.
The only service to Blackpool South as far as I'm aware is from Colne via Burnley Barracks/Central and stations to Preston then along the southern section of the Flyde coast to Blackpool South.

Is that really the application of Northern livery or just the removal of an odd few flecks of First magenta?!

Is that really the application of Northern livery or just the removal of an odd few flecks of First magenta?! Don't know about that. But I have been told that is the livery Northern are going to use.

It could be the case where the current paint job is still under warranty and with a few tweaks of the First livery could be a variant of the current Northern livery.

I guess it's a point of debate. In these circumstances should it really be classed as an official variant of a livery, or as in my belief should it just be classed as wearing First livery but with minimal disguise and Northern logos stuck on top? To extend the argument, should Northern's 142s in Arriva Trains Northern livery with Northern logos added be classed as Northern Rail livery?

Well what I meant was like what they are doing to the 333s with the purple added. But something different done on the 180s and then be classed as a deviation to the official livery.

The 333 matter is a bit different because it isn't wearing a different operator's colours with bits missing. The 333 is more of an update to the existing livery.
The 180 however appears to me to still be in First livery, but with references to First removed. Therefore can this really be classed as Northern livery?

I get your point Craig. I suppose they will remain like that until the current warrenty on the indigo expires.
Arriva Trains Wales still has a fair few 175 units knocking about in First livery with Arriva Trains Wale/Trenau Cymru fleetnames applied on.

I think it's more the point that Northern are only leasing the units from NXEC that they are not being given proper livery, although I don't know if paint warranties are also a factor in this.
