supposedly Arriva's DAF ALX300's have them and that's why they call them "snails".

Id imagine most modern buses have them installed, although no doubt its at the descretion of the purchaser? from what i can gather a speed like 57mph give or take is the common speed there set to.
The reason why, to prevent buses from speeding. After all in most cases buses wont be going on roads that have a limit higher than 60mph and for a bus thats a good enough speed for the seemingly few that regularly venture onto the Motorways.

The national speed limit for buses and coaches is 60mph, hence no speed limiter would be set at more than this.
As far as I know most new buses and coaches are required by law to have a speed limiter, or if this isn't the case yet then it will be soon.

Erm, don't think it has anything to do with speed restrictor on the bus that makes it go dreadfully slow, more to do with the gearbox on them. This also makes them rattle like mad. I think it is common practice for all "local" buses to be restricted to 50mph as in most cases, they don't need to go above that speed. Furthermore, it improves fuel economy.

Most local buses don't have limiters - many Dennis Darts can't top 40mph, and the engine/gearbox combination ensures that they can't, even downhill. That said, they are made to accelerate and brake from 0-20mph and back again pretty quickly.

All new buses are restricted to 50mph.
Its the Law for all local service buses.
