It has been reported in Coach & Bus Week Magazine that Calderdale Borough Council are in talks with Metro to finance a new FreeTownBus for Halifax. It is part of CBCs strategy to reduce congestion around Halifax Town Centre.
The initial cost of the scheme is worked out to be £150,000.

TJ Walsh should be worried if a free alternative is coming to town!

They will probably bid for the contract if anything comes off the ground.

They would probably be given it automatically. Metro funding a service to compete with a commercial service sounds like it would break some sort of rule

Does seem a little bit odd that they 'might' compete two services together but am sure there is some policy that they cant.
I would imagine that it should go straight to TJ Walsh but yet again first might award it to a different company. Mind you what are the chances of them giving it to first anyway because most of these FCB'S are run by indepedent companys barring the Leeds One.

Wasn't the Bradford service awarded by default to First on the basis of it taking away trade they would have otherwise had on the normal services?
Preusmably the same situation would apply in Halifax with TJ Walsh on that basis.

I would hope HJC would bid for it and combine it with the current "rump" C68 service to Sainsburys that used to run as a town bus but now only goes to the bus station and back due to Sainsburys being worried about letting non-shoppers on free

Won't TJW still potentially lose out? Yes, Metro could pay them to run the free service, but I would guess a considerable part of their income comes from their various routes looping the town. Would the Metro funding be equal to the current farebox income?
Interesting point about the C68 - perhaps Sainsbury's could consider part funding the new service in exchange for bus advertising, as is now done with other free services.
