Automatic ticket gates for Leeds stationInstallation work begins Friday 1 August.Work by Northern Rail to install 25 new automatic ticket gates at Leeds station starts on Friday 1 August Similar to those used on London Underground, the gates are expected to make it easier for passengers to travel through the station and help reduce the number of people travelling without a ticket. Work to install the ticket gates on the platform side of the existing booths, which they will replace, begins on Friday 1 August and has been planned to ensure there is no disruption to passengers. The new gates will be in operation by the end of the year and posters and leaflets explaining how they work will be available at Leeds and other stations. www.wymetro.com/News/080729-4.htm

When automated gates and photo cards were in use at the same time in London there were always seperate manned barriers. However, your actual card should scan through the machines with the photo card only required when requested by an inspector - at least that's the way it worked when I served time as a South London commuter.
With Leeds as the hub of the West Yorkshire rail network, however, I wonder whether Metro might be eyeing up Oystercard-style technology.
Unlike the London terminii, however, Leeds is a significant nodal interchange and most of the concessions are on the "civilian" side of the barriers, therefore a manned barrier would, I expect, have to be maintained to enable those changing at Leeds to get onto the concourse and back again.

Well I think the information printed onto the tickets is stored on the magnetic stripe which the barriers will read so if you're going onto the Station concourse whilst making a connecting to go and get some food for example. The barrier will release your ticket and will only hold tickets with Leeds as final destination.
I can't see any job losses either with the automated barriers as they will need those staff to help passengers and deal with passengers without valid tickets. Arriva Trains Wales have at least two people manning the barriers at Rhyl Station which only has about four trains an hour serving the station.

What about Metro's bus and train Day Rovers? How will they work with these barriers?

Yes and what about the Metro passes. I think they have have to be renewed and have a magnet on them so u can tap onto the barrier similar to Oyster Cards in London.

All tickets, season tickets, Metrocards and Dayrovers issued at Railway Stations have the magnetic strip on the back of the ticket which stores the data of the ticket.
The gates read this data and open the gate. If your ticket is station issued, you just put it through the machine and hey presto.
Sometimes the strip doesn't work, in this case you just go back to the issuing point and get a free duplicate.
As for Post Office/Bus Station Travel Centre issued tickets, we haven't been told yet.

Well I would imagine you would present it to a member of staff at the gates who would let all people using said Dayrover through.

Which kind of defeats the object of automated barriers! Yes it dose, but they can pass more people through as there will be more barriers than the original booths. I don't like new type of barriers.

what advantage will these have? they won't be cost effective if you ask me as they will need the same number of people for the booths as they will the gates.
all it is is modernisation.
The booths do the job good enough and dont see why they're getting replaced

Well there will be more automatic ticket barriers in operation than the six (is it?) person operated barriers in operation at the station already. It should speed up the process of people getting to/from the platforms to the concourse.
Naturally, there will be teething problems as can be expected when a new system is introduced where people will need to familiarise themselves to.

Metro have announced on their site that the new barriers will be ready at the end of the month. They do give an explanation to passengers about what to do with certain tickets. Normal tickets are just inserted into the machine, as does Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly or Annual MetroCards which are bought at staffed train stations. Those that don't, plus CIV-tickets and the stratch-off DayRover tickets will have to show their ticket to a member of staff who will let passengers through. www.wymetro.com/News/081016-2.htm

A bit too late given as the number of times I've passed through a shut ticket barrier in the Interchange is too much to count

An e-mail has been sent out from Metro about the new gates. Here's a bit of it:
The automatic ticket gates currently being installed at Leeds Station will go live on Sunday 26 October 2008.
However, during the morning peak on Monday 27 October 2008, the gates will be temporarily set to an open position to allow free movement without the need to insert a ticket.
On Monday afternoon, the gates will again become fully operational in time for the afternoon peak. From this moment on, you will need to insert a valid ticket into the barrier in order to open a gate to access the platform concourse.
Delays are expected whilst users get used to using the new gates. We strongly advise you to allow extra time before your train is due to depart if you intend to travel during the afternoon peak.
Sounds like they're letting passengers know about the new gates in the morning so they'll be ready in the afternoon.

I know they have been operating through the day, but I had heard that at peak times they were struggling and people had to go through without ticket checks?

The machine worked fine for me on Monday at 17:32 and didn't notice anyone having problems.
In fact I was breaking my journey and it returned my ticket (as with London Underground return tickets).

Are they equipped with any kind of Oyster-style card reading device in preparation for YorCard?
