Have First given up on applying the Gold Stars to the front of buses now after they have been repainted and deep cleaned? I have seen a few buses that have been repainted and don't wear a star, you can only tell with the website sticker below the driver's cab window. Furthermore, the new Wright Eclipse Urbans at Cherry Row don't wear them either.
Any reason for First to discontinue applying them?

Any reason for First to discontinue applying them? Was there really ever a need to apply them in the first place?

I don't know the answer to that, but other First bus companies have similar systems in place with applying some symbol to the front of buses when repainted and deep cleaned. First Glasgow seem to have the star bus system for some time now.
The FreeCityBus Optare Solos were the first buses that had the stars on, then followed by Kirkstall's share of the 2006 intake of Geminis whilst Bramley didn't get them applied. It was noticable on how cleaner and less evidence of window etching was present on Kirkstall's of that compared to Bramley based ones (all now based at Cherry Row). So from that, I would assume First would keep on top of cleaning the mess and vandalism to these buses.
