Seems like a waste to build a new depot and not even use it.

It was suggested a few months ago on the RailUK Forum depending how the tendered results went then most of Coastliner would move to York with Malton becoming an outstation with a couple of buses for the Whitby runs. Service 20 seems to be remaining with Transdev as well.

Depends on the tendering process.None of the existing operators beyond probably First with the 1 are guaranteed to retain the services they have. Also I understand all York and North Yorkshire bus service are moving to be udner the control of the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority when it formed im May.

Service 20 seems to be remaining with Transdev as well. If all Coastliner services were moved to the York depot then I can see a lot of the 843 journeys that run to/from Malton being culled. All 8 of the departures from Leeds after 5pm run through to Malton and terminate with the bus then going straight to bed. How many of those journeys will continue beyond York if they then have to run empty back to York afterwards? My guess would be no more than one or two, basically the end of evening buses to Malton. Likewise morning journeys from Malton towards Leeds departing before 0745 on weekdays, or 0900 on Saturday, come straight from the depot so it's hard to see that there would be enough demand for many of them to continue running if they have to add dead mileage on as well. But going the other way, the first 3 journeys to Scarborough start straight from the depot in Malton but would now need to add dead or little-used mileage from York or the first journey(s) in and out of Scarborough would face cancellation. It strikes me that moving Coastliner operations to York would make the operation less efficient, and would see a lot of marginal services at the start and end of the day removed.

Could Malton be used an outstation for a couple or so vehicles.

It depends, as they could also just add some extra runs between York & Malton, depending on if passenger numbers are worth keeping the early morning/evening runs. As the post did state Malton would be used as an outstation they could decide to keep some 843s there as well. In some aspects it would make the operation more efficient, as currently there are currently dead runs to/from York & Tadcaster what would make better sense to run from York depot plus would provide some flexibility if they ever decided to bring back the Summer express extras.

The rumour is that some of the Coastliner will move to York not all of it So there should still be buses to Malton, just not every single one at a high frequency The line about ‘some Whitby runs’ was just someone on RUK forum guessing, there is no solid foundation that that is all Malton would be used for

Doubt there is the actual demand for six buses leaving Malton for York between 0459 and 0712 then you have the two eastbound workings that start at Tadcaster which run empty from Malton. Seems to me there are some significant mileage savings to be made in moving three or four workings to Rawcliffe on top of the existing York-Hazlebush one - that will be an issue with the loss of the Castleline as it is worked by a Versa that then takes up that service from Malton. Alternatively the bus could be used to form the 0750 from Malton to Scarborough.
