Following on from other suggestion threads, what would be new infrastructure people would introduce to help improve bus journeys?
The first Suggestions I Would have are:
1) All dual carriageways that have 4 buses per hour or more M-Sat would have one lane turned into a bus lane where one isn't currently present except the likes of Stanningley/Elland Bypasses, alongside traffic light priority & where suitable cut throughs added to roundabouts (E.G Killingbeck for the routes to Crossgates)
2) Knocking down the Multistory car park at Leeds Market to create a new 'York Street Hub' (or extension to the Bus Stn depending how you see it), with routes that currently terminate at Eastgate moving here plus possibly Megabus/Flixbus what alongside providing more space in the current bus station (for possibly future bus service improvements) would mean they can have the same stop in Leeds 24/7 what would make it easier for their passengers.
3) Possibly one that could become controversial, but at St James Hospital I Would install a Bus Gates at the top section of Beckett Street (Just after the entrance to the Hospital roundabout heading out of the City/ after the entrance to the Medical Museum towards the city), allowing buses a clearer route past the hospital as through journeys in a car wouldn't be possible with them either redirected onto Gledhow Rd or Stoney Rock Lane with encouragement for them to move onto local transport.

Removing the lights from the bus lane after the Leeds Rd, Station Rd stop on the 202/203 and 229.
This seems to be a mistake the combined authority continues to make when a bus lane ends and transitions back into traffic. They put a separate traffic light for bus lane.
Removing them and allowing the bus to filter back into the normal lane would make a magnitude of difference. This kind of thing existed in York, and Manchester, and they have since removed the lights all together for the bus lane.

Point 3 wouldn't be possible as you need to allow car and private hire taxi access to all buildings on the hospital site, e.g. people arriving for some, if not all medical procedures must arrive by car or taxi. I've had this happen to me quite a few times and I've had to go home by the same methods after. |

Point 3 wouldn't be possible as you need to allow car and private hire taxi access to all buildings on the hospital site, e.g. people arriving for some, if not all medical procedures must arrive by car or taxi. I've had this happen to me quite a few times and I've had to go home by the same methods after. Access to all buildings would still be available using either Gledhow Rd & Alma Street or Stoney Rock Lane & Shakespeare Street to access the Hospital, plus Taxis are already able to go through bus gates so they wouldn't be affected. |

It sounds like it just needs cameras installing (if not already there) to give buses priority 100% of the time |

That design could work, just got to be careful of cars trying to dodge the lights and go through the Zebra crossing although as many other countries are able to do traffic light priority I do wonder if it's not about how well the technology works and more to do with rubbish maintenance/cost cutting as they don't earn money like bus gate cameras do. |

The western side of King Cross Road is a nightmare, all the First buses: 579, 586, 590, 591 and 592 use the main road to then onto Queens Road and on to the eastern side of King Cross Street when heading towards Halifax Town Centre.
To help combat this I would expand the car park by the library so all the cars parked on the street can use that car park, then I would make the Western part of the road a full bus gate with the acceptation of loading vehicles, taxis, and two wheeled vehicles like motorbike and bicycles. The loading vehicles would have to have a permit to enter. Also Wainhouse Road will be allowed full access by any car if coming straight from the A646 or A58.
I would also use this as an opportunity to make King Cross a "bus hub." The Hub will feature a local bus map and information as well as adding an extra Southbound bus stop. One Bus stop can be allocated for Lower Calder Valley services such as 532 (to Skircoat), 574, 579, 586 and 587 and then other for buses towards the upper Calder valley services 590/1/2 as well as the 532 to Halifax.
Even though the shelters have been upgraded at King Cross back in 2015, I would re-do them to feature the Leeds City Centre style bus stop with the green roof and info button as well as Real-Time Bus information.
In addition to this idea, I have seen the usage of Oyster Card top up machines around places that aren't just bus stations or train stations so maybe we could introduce this idea to West Yorkshire where several areas can include the Travel Info Machine and M-Card Machines.
I will mention Calderdale as I am more familiar with the area:
King Cross Centre
Hebden Bridge New Road, Railway Stn and Hope Street
Todmorden Bus Station and Railway Stn
Sowerby Bridge Wharf Street by the market
Brighouse Sainsbury's and Brighouse Bus Station
Ripponden Brig Royd main shelter
West Vale maybe by the Rochdale Road bus stop for buses towards Greetland
Elland Southgate or Huddersfield Road
The reason why I haven't mentioned popular areas such as Pellon, Mixenden and Illingworth is to avoid vandalism to the machines.
I think this is a nice little idea as it makes the switch to M-Card easier.

Leeds city centre is very much not bus friendly.
When I've used the 60, you get stuck at the lights at the exit of the bus station , then the lights before eastgate roundabout, then the lights at vicar Lane, then the pedestrian crossing near Sainsbury's, then the lights at Albion Street, then the lights at park row then the lights at the bottom of park row, the end of infirmary street, the bottom of king Street etc. Can quite easily take 15 minutes to get from the bus station to where the evening post was in light traffic.
Surely it's not beyond human intelligence to be able to program the lights to allow buses freer movement through the city centre?

In addition to Pricel's comments about King Cross. I'd make the traffic lights from King Cross towards Burnley Road change just one second before the opposing side. Alot of the time the lights have turned red before you can complete the turn due to traffic from Manor Heath running the Red light on their side. Then you get traffic from Sowerby Bridge setting off. That extra one second would allow a bus at the front of the queue to set off on green and make it onto Burnley Road before traffic coming the other way starts to move.

I think this is a nice little idea as it makes the switch to M-Card easier. There's already a push to move people off MCards. If you open the MCard app it'll promote the MCard Mobile app so you can get your ticket(s) on your phone. |

Back to point 3 for St James. Permanent Bus lane needs to be extended as far back as the fountain head pub. Sticking a bus lane there to join the existing one on Burmantofts Street would shave time. I used to lived off Beckett street for 20 years ( childhood into adulthood) and seen the worse traffic on an evening PM  |

More of a question but when the metro introduced those live display bus stops, for every stop, even non sheltered ones, was it ever revealed how it affected bus usage or patronage?
If I'm not mistaken, I believe the 16 has live information on almost every stop?

I truly do wonder whether people ACTUALLY care about live information enough for it to increase usage or patronage. I'd say alot of people do care about it - look at how many people complain online when the info is inaccurate or try requesting it fitted to their local stop. It probably won't increase patronage on it's own but rather as part of a wider package of improvements similar to the roll out in Edinburgh during the early 00s |

Lindley Bus Station
I think this would be worth building. Lindley has a bunch of bus services. Almost all of which terminate or pass through, or near, Thorncliffe Street, which is where the bus station would ideally be built
It has a small, seemingly abandoned piece of land, in an ideal location for a tiny bus station. It may not have been worth building previously but with the upcoming changes it seems like a great thing to build to increase patronage.

From Huddersfield they’d go straight on at Sainsburys roundabout, stop at a new stop on Bradford Road adjacent to the bus station, and then cross Ludenshield Link at grade via a light controlled bus gate, before continuing towards Bradford. The stops at Tesco/Ritz would be removed.
The stops at the railway station would be improved as well, in both directions they are just poles with no shelter, and the one in the Huddersfield direction is quite a distance from the actual station

The ones on the WYCA site (https://www.yourvoice.westyorks-ca.gov.uk/a641) have the bus gate you mention only as a Bike crossing  The believe the upgraded X63 stops are the first part of an upgrade of the rail station area, as they are planning a rebuild of the entrance/exit with the bottom of Gooder Lane becoming Bus & Taxi only to create a mini hub for the station. |

I Like this idea although a few minor road changes would probably be needed (bottom of Thomas Street being made one way down to Lidgett Street with parking allowed only down one side & removal of some parking from Brian Street) If i'm looking at the correct bit of land (the old care home) then you should be able to fit 5 stands/stops there what would allow room for future service improvements/restoring the HRI links from the villages. |
