Is it me or are Manchester's trams just too slow? I took one from Picadilly to Media City and it took forever, some sections were just a crawl! Sheffield's seem much quicker in comparison.

I was going to go on the Metrolink between Oldham and Media City/Salford Quays a couple of weeks ago, but when i checked the Tfgm Metrolink website the night before for details of fares/times etc, it did warn of roadworks and delayed services in that area. So unfortunately i went in my car instead.

In the city centre section (Victoria/Piccadilly to Cornbrook) there is quite simply too many trams so you end up in a tram queue where they all follow each other especially up around Deansgate Castlefield

Personally I think they should build new tram routes underground to allow the space for the Manchester Metrolink to expand.

Totally agree that the entire city centre network should be underground as it's tediously slow, even the section beyond Pomona out to Media City was just painfully slow for my liking. I can totally see why the network has too many trams concentrated on so few lines as an Altringham bound tram stopped 30 seconds before the Media City one pulled in, almost the same on the way back with another tram in front doing a reverse to Trafford too. Any more trams and you may as well call them giant buses lol

For being a regular tram user. The core section between Cornbrook and Victoria / Piccadilly is a slog. You do get backed up trams on this section, though they manage it quite well. Often I see sections with temp speed limits on ( you can tell if you see a red number on the speed limit rather than black ) hence sometimes we wonder why a tram slowing down for this area.
It’s the turns and corners. The turn after Deansgate to St. Peter’s square has to be the slowest of the lot in the core zone.
Media city trams aren’t helped, as their not even running to Eccles right now as part of the 3 month tram works.
The Sheffield trams but seem to run smoother.

One thing I noticed at Media City was large numbers of people waiting for buses compared to those waiting for the tram, although the stops there serve other destinations, I wonder if the bus is quicker to Manchester City Centre making it more popular than the tram?

The bus is timetabled to take 50% longer than the tram.

I can only assume the number of people waiting for the bus - maybe due to the bus replacement service taking tram users to Eccles to complete their journey. The only frequent route you have from media city is Stagecoach’s 50 which runs to East Didsbury back to Salford and Manchester royal infirmary. Though from observations seen a decker about half full. Never really packed.
