Someone recently said if everyone demanded big pay rises then inflation will rocket, about time the government stepped in with laws what limit pay rises to 2% otherwise at this rate with all the pay demands this country will be Thomas Cooked!

Wow. Now that'd be an authoritarian government. You realise that the current inflation has very little to do with wage rises? Except that, increasingly, people can't afford things. Thomas Cook's problems weren't caused by staff wage rises. |

Knowing Josephs colourful way with words I would suggest that the comment about the country being 'Thomas Cooked' should be read in the context of Cockney Rhyming Slang rather than a direct reference to the problems at Thomas Cook  |

"Someone said" doesn't mean that that someone knows what they are talking about. We appear to have no problem with the people at the top of the food chain giving themselves ever greater salary increases while those who actually do the work are pushed further and further into financial difficulties as their wages don't keep up with inflation. If we ended and reversed this culture of guaranteed inflation-busting rises for those at the top then there would be enough to pay the workers a fair wage without it increasing costs to the point where prices were forced upwards – it is the never-ending greed of the people who already have more money than they can ever spend that is responsible for it, not paying workers fairly. |

Aslef strike announced for 5 January.
Not sure how this will affect trains — as this is the drivers' Union I'm assuming there'll be no trains whatsoever — but with RMT off on other days, this a bit unfortunate.

The interesting thing about the Xmas Eve strikes is the Airedale and Wharfedale lines won't see a service, yet have done on every other strike day as well as the next lot, I wonder why?

Maybe it's a combo of an overtime ban and the need for services to have finished in good time to enable trains to be safely back at their depots before 6pm. |

I was told that the people in charge day to day of the overhead lines (the ECO) were going to be on strike (but got called off) so we're unable to run electric trains as the wires were switched off, and it was too late to bring back the trains into the timetable |

From RTT it appears there's no train service in West Yorkshire, apart from a two-hourly LNER Doncaster – Leeds shuttle, and Grand Central services.

Aslef strike announced for 5 January, with RMT off on other days, this a bit unfortunate. Northern don't allow their driver managers to drive trains alone so nothing can be run |

Train drivers union, ASLEF, has said it has rejected a pay offer from 16 train companies and has announced further rail strikes in May and June.
The proposal was for a pay rise of 4%, which ASLEF says it's not acceptable with inflation running above 10%.
Drivers will now take strike action on Friday, 12th May, Wednesday, 31st May, and Saturday, 3rd June.

My job isn't well paid and has a hefty amount of responsibility, including the prospect of prison should I make a mistake that costs a life, but you see me cutting my cloth to meet my needs not downing tools demanding more pay! If drivers aren't happy I suggest they find better paid work rather than messing everyone around, I'm very sure we can find someone willing to take their place for the wage offered. Bring on the robots, I'd quite happily take a chance on a computerised automated driverless train than put up with this strike crap from a bunch of babies! |

Plus, you'll have a lonnnnnnnnggggggg wait for automated trains on our Victorian infrastructure.
Would cost many many hundreds of billions and decades and decades of disruption to make the network suitable for automated trains.

There are already shortages of train drivers, which suggests that the job is not well paid enough for the level of responsibility and the demands and conditions. If you want train drivers to leave for better-paid jobs then we'll see even more cuts to rail services as TOCs are unable to recruit and retain staff ... or at least, not without significantly improving the pay deal, but that's the free market for you – if you want to have enough drivers then you have to pay drivers enough. Fully driverless trains on the national rail network are a complete non-starter, certainly not in the next 20 years. If your job really does demand a high level of responsibility then I hope you approach it with a better attitude than you show on here. |

Is it babyish to want to be paid a decent wage? Deciding to strike is rarely an easy decision - if it were it would probably be a lot more widespread. Just because you're happy to be paid less than is comfortable to live on despite a responsible job doesn't mean everyone should have that attitude. I'd suggest you might be better off in a union (or a better union if you're already in one). |

Aslef members at 16 rail operators will refuse to work overtime - an action short of a strike - on the following days:
Monday 3 July
Tuesday 4 July
Wednesday 5 July
Thursday 6 July
Friday 7 July
Saturday 8 July

Additional disruption is expected between 17-22 July and 31 July - 5 August, particularly Friday 21 July, due to industrial action called by ASLEF.
