It is mentioned tonight in the YEP that First Leeds is one of five companies who could win the National Transport Awards prestigious Pulbic Transport Operator of the Year award 2008. This is over the roll out of the ftr last year in Leeds with First working with Metro and Leeds City Council.
It would be nice for Steve Graham to come back with the award and get First some much needed positive press attention.

Last year the award was won by Northern Rail over increased passenger numbers through partnership with Yorkshire Forward and Metro.

Ok, this is who First Leeds are up against for the award:
Go North East Lothian Buses Stagecoach Fife Stagecoach Inverness
I somewhat feel that Lothian could possibly scoop the award. Well fingers crossed for First Leeds anyway!

Well it all depends on which companies entered them selves for the award and then who was shortlisted to the final five.
Anyway, last time I remember Go North East ran buses in England!

After todays journey home on the no 1 they DONT deserve it.
I was ok with the usual joruney home, Few standing etc but soon as we go to and went past the UNI it was crazy. First of all our bus driver picked up a load from a Broken Down Bus(say about 60 or more). That is enough. GO direct to holt park or until there is enough seats and pick up no one until that point. NO He just kept cramming them on and on and on. There must off been at least 100 pax if not more on that bus.
First need to revamp fleet in leeds think of a master plan becuase of all the congestion on the buses(Too Many People Standing), then if that all goes well then i would be pleased for them but until they get them selves sorted out then no way do they deserve this award.

So you would only like First to win a prestigious transport award if their policy was to leave passengers from a broken down bus stranded at the road side?

I assume you are talking about an artic? If so, what is the problem? The concept of the articulated vehicle to is to carry large volumes of people!

Here's a question - who sponsors this award?
Bus operator of the year (usually awarded in October) is sponsored by Belmont and the winner is invariably a Belmont client.
And here's another question - if you'd been standing in pissing down rain at Hyde Park, wondering how you'd get home, would'nt you be a bit grateful to a driver prepared to crush load rather than continue to stand at a fairly exposed stop with rain pouring down your neck?
Sorry, Nick, but your own journey is far less important than what First Leeds do all day. Now, I'm no apologist for Profits-First as a whole but they've raised their game a lot over the last five years, and are now providing a service that befits the city.
There remain grey areas - conspicuously the less profitable bits - where I don't think they are entirely adequate but on the whole I think they're not bad. If you want qualification, try working in Birmingham for a few weeks (as I just have) and see what Nat-Ex don't have on offer.
As I say, the validity of the award is moot. What is the criteria?
For effort, and application, First Leeds do reasonably well in my eyes.
As for the competition - Lothian will win. They're in a strop because they did'nt get a look-in on Alistair Darling's own personal LRT and the disenfranchised Edinburgh wee-frees will chuck in their protest votes.

The Award is called the Chris Moyes Award for Public Transport Operator of the Year. The National Transport Awards are not sponsored.

I'm not surpised. They run frequent, modern services with some running 24hrs a day. One thing that has puzzled me about Lothian though is their insistance on using the really old style destination blinds. They still have the white/grey writing on black background - the same West Riding etc had back in the 80's. Even the newest buses have this rather than the easier to read LED displays.
