I know that work is underway to bring the second platform into use but I have recently noticed more train running on lines north east of Castleford (adjacent to Wheldon Road). Does anyone know the reason to this?

Northern and TPE are route learning the route between Leeds and York via Castleford to facilitate the TRU programme and closures of the mainline between Leeds and York via Garforth.

I mean a Fast TP Express service avoiding Leeds could work. York to Liverpool via Castleford line, Wakefield Line and Calder Valley Line like the Key Worker express they used to run.

Leeds to Manchester is the busiest section of any of the Transpennine network, I don't believe bypassing Leeds would make commercial sense, especially in the 'current climate' (overcast).

The route via Castleford and Kirkgate is about the same distance as via Leeds, you might cut a mile at most off the route but no more than that. The main time saving comes from just not stopping at Leeds ... but the reasons trains all stop at Leeds, often for several minutes, is that it's a really popular, busy station where a lot of passengers are starting or finishing their journey or changing trains. Missing out Leeds in order to run a faster service might attract a handful of extra passengers to the train but would disadvantage far more.

I think jst was referring to potential closures of the Leeds to York route probably for electrification work.

Cheers for all of your replies , the TRU upgrade makes sense. That explains why they have done a lot of track works along that stretch.
