It's well known how to easily reach the likes of Hebden Bridge and Harewood House from the likes of Leeds, Bradford etc, but it becomes much harder to work out the best way to reach places not as well known without having to mess about with journey planners and Google maps. I found this out on a recent visit to Wentworth Woodhouse, which is quite far from Rotherham and more nearer Elsecar to be honest. I used Bus Times to look up times of buses from Rotherham to Wentworth, as the house address describes itself as being part of Rotherham, and the website doesn't tell you how to reach the place on public transport. So with all this in mind, I thought it a great idea to start a thread listing the best or near best ways to reach the lesser known touristy parts from West Yorkshire to make life a bit easier this Summer.
Monday to Saturday, Wentworth Woodhouse is best reached from Leeds and Wakefield via Elsecar station, as the train takes an hour from Leeds and 30 mins from Wakefield Kirkgate on direct services. There are also indirect options taking around 10 mins longer changing in Barnsley from the express to the Huddersfield stopper so you have 2 journeys an hour split quite well apart. The 09.30 arrival at Elsecar on one of the direct trains connects with service 136 which leaves Hoyland at 09.40, probably passing the station a couple of mins later, this arrives into Wentworth at 09.49, and then it's a short 10 minute walk from the village centre to Wentworth Woodhouse estate, which is located on the opposite side of the village about half a mile past the Cenotaph next to a farm. Alight in the centre of the village, or even at the first stop, as once past the village the 136 turns off onto a very busy road with no footpath so your stuck until the next return lol. Should you miss this bus, or want to set off later from Leeds/Wakefield, there is a train which arrives into Elsecar at 11.09, this being one where a change in Barnsley is needed. This connects quite tightly to a 136 which leaves Hoyland at 11.10am, so passing the station probably a couple of minutes later so you need to be quick. There is a direct train what arrives into Elsecar at 10.30 for those who don't want to rush. Return journeys from Wentworth leave at 1.55pm, 3.55pm and 5.55pm arriving at Elsecar less than 10 mins later, these connect very well with direct trains to Wakefield and Leeds leaving Elsecar at 2.20pm, 4.20pm and 6.20pm. Should any of these buses run late, or even miss, then you still have the option of the indirect trains changing at Barnsley.
Wentworth can also be reached via Rotherham, however the train takes longer from both Leeds and Wakefield to reach Rotherham compared to Elsecar, and it's a good half hour from Rotherham to Wentworth on the 136. There are however a couple of good connecting journeys Monday to Friday, the 11.44 arrival into Rotherham from Leeds and Wakefield connects well with the 11.57 136 to Wentworth and the 136 from Wentworth at 16.49 arrives into Rotherham at 17.18 in time for a train to Leeds and Wakefield at 17.28.
